Friendly Ghost Pencil Toppers

September 17, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Happy Halloween folks! I’m Kelly from Smart School House sharing a fun Halloween craft with you today! Ok, well, maybe it isn’t technically Halloween yet, but you know it will be here in the blink of an eye (or a googly eye in this case!). Do you have kiddos in your life that enjoy arts and crafts? Then this one is for you!
Ghost Pencil Toppers
As a teacher, I love anything to do with pencils and crayons (as you can see in THIS fun post). I think these friendly ghost pencil toppers would be fun to make in the classroom OR at home, no? To get started, you only need some very, very basic (and cheap) materials:

  • pencils
  • white craft foam
  • googly eyes glue
  • polka dot ribbon (optional)

I drew a ghost free hand, but this can be done with a stencil if you have one on hand. Each pencil topper has TWO foam ghosts, so cut out as many as you will need depending on how many pencil toppers you want to make. Psssst: here’s a tip, if you’re working with kids, make extra! There are bound top be craft mishaps, and that is all part of the learning process:)

Once you have cut out your ghosts, connect them together using glue. I used hot glue because it is quick! But again, if you’re working with kids, plain white glue will also work. Of course, it takes longer for white glue to dry. Only put a little glue around the top and sides of the ghost though! I like to say, “Dot, dot, not a lot!” when I’m working with kids. Simply show them to make small dots of white glue along the outer edges so that the pencil can be pushed inside.

There you have it Halloween lovers! A cute and kid-friendly craft to celebrate the fun! It is always such a pleasure being here. I’d love for you to stop by my blog, Smart School House, and see the other festive crafts (and sweets) that I have up my sleeve these days!

Thanks Kelly! I am dying over the googly eyes with the eyelashes! So fun!

10 Fun Pumpkin Ideas for Fall

September 4, 2013 By Michelle Barneck Leave a Comment

The other day I was searching for a pumpkin post in the archives when I discovered that I have a whole lot of posts that include pumpkins. This probably stems from my deeply embedded love for fall, but even I was surprised how many there were. So, I thought it would be fun to do a round up of my ten favorite pumpkin posts.
This is gonna be fun right?! Let’s get on with it…my top ten favorite pumpkin posts.
Pumpkin Caramel Apple
I mean it has an actual branch for a stick. What’s not to love?
Doily Pumpkin Treat Bag
The most adorable treat envelope ever.

Pumpkin Caramels
The easiest treat you will ever make! Two ingredients.
Pumpkin Wreath
I love how the white pumpkins have a totally different mood!
Paper Pumpkins
If you can fold paper in half, you can make these!
Houndstooth Pumpkin
Duct tape is a girls best friend.
Pumpkin Steamer
Starbucks knock off, like drinking fall.
Pumpkin Game
No sew cloth pumpkins for the littles to toss.
Pumpkin Pedestal Centerpiece
Made with dollar store supplies.
Pumpkin Spice Rice Krispie Treats
Like the originals with a little surprise.
You think that’s a lot of pumpkins? I had even more posts that didn’t make the list. I’m telling you, I love fall and I can’t wait for it to get here! The kids are back in school and it has even started cooling down just slightly. Can’t wait to hear the leaves crunching and head on down to the pumpkin patch!

Peter Pan Family Costume

October 31, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Happy Halloween
from Hook, Smee, Peter, and Tiger Lily!

For our Disney DIY this week we made a Smee costume for Dad. Just buy a white t-shirt and add blue stripes with painters tape and fabric paint. Throw in some blue shorts, sandals, and a red beanie. Cut sideburns out of cotton rounds and safety pin them to the beanie. We forgot to move his glasses on the end of his nose for the picture. Voila, instant Smee!
Wednesdays through January!

Pumpkin Steamer

October 30, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

Something about fall with the crisp air and cool night breezes that draws me toward something deliciously warm to drink. I love a yummy Starbuck’s Pumpkin Steamer as much as the next girl, but those paper cups of heaven can take a toll on your pocket book. So, I took things in to my own hands and found out how very simple it is to make your own pumpkin steamer.

Pumpkin Steamer

  • 3/4 ounce pumpkin spice syrup
  • 3/4 ounce vanilla-flavored syrup
  • 8 ounces cold milk
  • Whipped Cream
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice

1. Steam syrup and cold milk together. (or if you’re like me, use the microwave for about minute and a half)
2. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice.

You can get the pumpkin spice syrup online. But, I a little birdie told me if you want it just like Starbuck’s you might want to get Torani or Da Vinci pumpkin sauce (which is creamier and thicker) instead of syrup, which will run you quite a bit more. If you want to make your own, here is a recipe for Pumpkin Spice Syrup.

Great by the mugful, or make a big batch for a party! I’m thinking a pumpkin steamer would make a fabulous addition to Thanksgiving breakfast! Sip it while preparing the feast!
