4th of July Decorations: Flag Canvas

June 20, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 30 Comments

Disclosure: I am a Cricut affiliate and received vinyl to use as I pleased. Here’s what I did with it.
Being in scouts I get to recite the Pledge of Allegiance once a week so when I was thinking of patriotic decor for the 4th my mind naturally gravitated towards it. I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted, to create the American flag out of the words of the pledge. I love how it turned out!

I designed the typography flag using Cricut Craft Room and cut it out of Cricut Vinyl using my Cricut Mini. I used transfer tape to place the vinyl on a canvas to create one of a kind 4th of July decor.

I like to be a good friend, so if you would like to make one for yourself here’s the template…
Download the free Pledge of Allegiance Flag Cricut template

I am a sucker for 4th of July crafts. See my American Stars and Stripes Pillow, 4th of July kids craft, and Patriotic Burlap Ruffle Table Runner.

What’s your favorite patriotic design, stars or stripes?

Love this. Thanks for sharing!! How did you get the vinyl to stick to the canvas? I tried using vinyl on canvas and it won’t stick :(. Is there a special vinyl for canvas? Thanks!

@pruttybird Lots of patience. Getting it off the transfer tape and on the the canvas was admittedly a chore, but the result was well worth it. I just did it slowly peeling from the transfer tape and pressing the letters down to make sure they were secure.

This is one of my favorite crafts I’ve seen. I don’t have a cricut, so I just typed it up (I have a font that might be the same as the one you used!). I’m planning on just mod podging it onto a 1 x 12. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas!

All the vinyl I’ve done has been for glass, not canvas…can’t wait to try this! What size canvas did you use? I want to make it for my mom for the 4th, but she lives in a retirement complex and doesn’t have much wall space. Could the size be shrunk for a smaller canvas?

@Crafty Library Lady My canvas was 11 x 14 so it may still be ok for a small space. You can easily shrink it by selecting the whole flag in cricut craft room and dragging the arrow in the corner of the box to shrink it.

I could not get the download to work. It said it was not supported by Acrobat or something. Do I need to do something else to get it to work? Or do you have any written instructions?

I just figured it out. You have to open the file in the Cricut Craft Room (CCR).

Hi Michelle, Do you have the instructions in text? The template turns my screen black when I try to open it in CCR. Love the new Windows! (NOT)!

It’s Margaret again, how about telling just what size fonts you used? That way you won’t have to type out instructions. Thanks Michelle! Beautifully inspiring work!! Makes me think I’m going to have to break and get a mini afterall! Margaret

@Margaret I have the new windows and it works perfectly for me. Did you download the file, click file, open in Cricut Craft room, import it from your downloads folder and then open it in craft room?

I love this idea not just for the 4th but for the representation of what it stands for! I was in the Iraq war and this something more that I can have in my home to represent all I believe and gave!

    Thank you for the share

I am absolutely in love with this! I’m making a hero wall tribute to my husband, whos in the military. It’s so beautiful and neat I dont trust myself in recreating it myself. Would you by any chance take order?

      Denise,

Your wall sounds amazing and I wish I could help. Unfortunately, I am having a baby this week and simply do not have the time. You are more than welcome to share the post and have someone else make it for you. Best of luck.
