Baby Week: No Sew Fleece Baby Cape

When talking with my sis about what she needed for her baby girl she mentioned that she had a lot of clothes, but many of them were for warm weather. So I got to work on the baby legs and this adorable no sew girly fleece cape I saw over on Ruffles and Stuff (Disney is amazing!!).

I knew many of the baby’s clothes were pink and purple and had this cute pink ribbon with brown flowers, so I went out and purchased some brown fleece. I apologize in advance for the pics! I followed the tutorial from Ruffles and Stuff for the most part, just on a smaller scale. I used a Lysol wipes container as a newborn size guide. 🙂

As you can see, I did not cut the arm slits because I was not sure where they should go for a baby so I wanted to do it once she arrived.

Once I got to the closure step of the tutorial (the little bows on the front bottom), I got confused and could figure out how to do the ties. If you can, go ahead and do that method or you can opt for what I did instead. *involves a needle and thread*

I tied two little bows for the outside and got some velcro dots for the inside to hold it closed. I stitched the bow to the outside and then stuck the velcro dots in place. Make sure they are the permanent glue velcro dots and that you stick them on really well.

And there you have it! A cute little cape to keep your bundle of joy cozy. This only took me a couple of hours one night to complete. I also made a matching hair bow that is coming up tomorrow!

Baby Week: Make Your Own Baby Legs with Matching Hair Accessories

Run, don’t walk out to buy some girls knee socks. Making your own baby legs is truly a snap and they are so adorable. I found a great DIY baby legs tutorial on Flickr (via Little Birdie Secrets) and got to sewing. Trust me, even the least experienced seamstress can pull this one off! I did. I mad two pair and then couldn’t stand to waste what was left so made some matching hair accessories out of it. Isn’t my niece going to be stylin’?! When she grows in to them that is. 😉

The only thing different from the tutorial is the “ruffle” on the camouflage pair. This was ironically born from a mistake of sewing them wrong on my first try. I turned them right side out and said, “dang it” until I looked closer. I loved the little deconstructed ruffle that had resulted. It gave it a little sass and edge. And with her red hair you know that girl is going to have a little sass!

Here they are modeled on my arm. I was thinking sweet Annie would be more like my nephew who is a total chunk so she may have to wear them in the fall, but we’ll see how fast she grows.

Now, when I was finished with the little leg warmers there were little scraps from the heels and toes of the socks left. Most people would have just scrapped them, but for some reason I couldn’t. I sat and looked at them for a long time and then I came up with these.

Aren’t they adorable! I guess I have a thing for the deconstructed as demonstrated by the bow. I took four of the heels/toes, layered them with the pointy part pointed to the middle and then hot glued them together. Then, I wrapped a piece of material around the center and glued it on. The flower is just two circles cut out with the edges singed to curl slightly sewn together with a button.

I am loving my scrappy hair accessories!

Baby Week: Making Cute Burp Clothes & Free Nursing Cover

With my little niece making her debut and my cute friend Evonne‘s little guy Vin soon to show his face I borrowed the machine from my mom and got to sewing. Lucky for me, these two are both very forgiving as my seamstress skills are severely lacking.


I started with those items I had already practiced with a few months ago. See all the tutorials in my archive: ribbon embellished burp cloths, super easy car seat cover, descriptive gift tags and more fun baby projects that I ran out of time for this time.


I had a great time coming up with different combos for the burp cloths. I think they all turned out really cute. I added buttons and bows to some of them this time which was a fun little touch.

The best thing about these cloth diaper burp clothes is that they absorb so well! I had a major spitter upper and the ones I received to match my receiving blankets were oh so cute, but liquid just runs right off of them right on to me. Nothing like smelling like milk. These have great coverage too. The tiny ones were just not enough for my kiddo.

For Vin, once I had everything sewn I put them all in to a “basket” with a cute nursing cover gift set from Uddercovers (that name slightly disturbs me) which you can try for free by entering the code “onefree.” Pretty cool eh! These are those cool ones that have the boning built in to the neckline so that you can see your baby. This is helpful, especially in the beginning!


The basket is a cd/dvd holder, it is not the prettiest, but is the perfect size to hold two rows of diapers side by side. I have used this for my little guys diapers ever since organizing the changing table/dresser. To top it all off, I had this adorable card that Alish from Sister’s Stuff made for me for the trade secrets swap.

All in all, I was very happy with how it all turned out. Now if I could just figure out how to be in a pic at the shower without being mid bite. At least Emily got a good laugh out of all my frightening photos. 😉

Random facts about me

I am so excited to answer all the questions that Scrappy Gifts sent me! This way I won’t have to pull more out of my endless mind of nonsense. So here we go with the one minute interview. 🙂

Where would you like to go on vacation?

  • I have always wanted to go to Bora Bora and stay in an overwater bungalow. Doesn’t this look amazing?! I would also like to go on an African Photo Safari.

If you could choose your own name, what would it be?

  • Funny you should ask this because I actually kind of did choose my name. In the second grade, I found out we were moving to Utah and thought I would be weird if my name was Emma. So, I switched to going by my middle name Michelle. Funny that now Emma is like one of the most popular girl names out there, but no so much in 1987.

What’s your favorite season and why?

  • My favorite season is most definitely Fall. Those who have been following me for a while will be well aware of this. I did a gazillion fall decorating posts. I love the chill in the air, the crunching leaves, the colors. I love pulling your sweaters out for the first time. I love harvest time when you can find such wonderful local produce. I love back to school shopping (no kids in school yet) and finding 25 cent packs of crayons and 15 cent notebooks. I just love everything about fall.

What do you like best about your home (maybe include a picture)?

  • One of the things I like best is our master bathroom. We tore the entire thing out down to floor boards and remodeled it all ourselves. Ok, so someone put in the gigantic floor to ceiling two person shower (I could stand in that thing all day just basking in the hot water), but we did the rest. I painted the cabinets, which were stained oak. Hubs and bro in law did the tile floors. We got all new fixtures and even a new toilet. I know you love the sticker on the lid.

    I bought it as a joke and now the hubs has become rather attached to it. I love the undermount sink and that the faucet is high enough that my two year old can climb up and use it as a drinking fountain. This room gives me a great sense of accomplishment. I just wish it had more natural light. We tried to put a window in the shower, but quickly realized that behind that wall is the chimney.

What are your favorite meals and dessert?

  • Favorite meal is probably when we do fondue for Christmas Eve. Not only for the delicious steak and chocolate fondue, but for the family time and spirit that is involved.
  • Dessert, well, I adore most every dessert. But, I will never be disappointed with a brownie sundae with home made hot fudge or molten chocolate cake.

Biggest pet peeve?

  • Wet socks, there is nothing I hate more than stepping in wetness when just in socks.
