Easy Car Seat Cover Tutorial

March 27, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 17 Comments

Want a cover that is as cute as your little one, but can keep them tucked away from strangers, sun, and coughing kiddos? Or maybe you need a more personal “hand made” baby shower gift idea. (This will be the first of a few ideas to come, I have been sewing for two days!) The answer is here and is easy enough for even the most crafty challenged of all of us.

All you need is some ribbon, a sewing machine, and a 30″ x 40″ receiving blanket. (I got these cute blue and brown ones at Walmart, if you are really crafty you could make the blanket too) This makes a nice light cover for Spring/Summer.

3 easy peasy steps to your DIY car seat cover:
1. Cut ribbon
2. Measure & pin
3. Sew rectangle

1. Measure 29-30″ of ribbon and cut. I melted the edges a little with a lighter so they would not frey.
2. Measure 9 inches in from the side of the blanket, 17 inches from the top, and 22 inches from the bottom. Pin one inch of the center of the ribbon to the blanket.
3. Sew a rectangle between the pins. (I had not sewn since 7th grade Home Ec 15 years ago so don’t tell me you can’t do this!)

Ta da you are now the proud new owner/gifter of an adorable DIY car seat cover!

This is a great idea. I could have used something like this for my 4 kids! I always used a hair clippie to keep my blankets on!! Now I can make them for unique gifts. Great web site, by the way.

Probably a stupid question but can you just clarify that you just purchased ONE piece of ribbon that was 29-30″ long and cut that in half for BOTH ties? Thank you!

Good question Trimble. Let me clarify. Each tie is 29-30″ long so there is plenty to go around the car seat and still tie in a bow. So in total you would need 60″.

Wow, thanks for clarification and the quick response! Can’t wait to make this and thank you for sharing your idea. I found another tutorial elsewhere that was WAY more complicated and I’m so not an overachiever. 😉 Happy to have a much easier solution that’s just as cute.

Very cute. So, if you wanted this for winter would you just make it somewhat thicker like a quilt ???

Thanks for a great place to find cute things! Love your blog!

I can’t wait to make these for a few expectant mommies I know! Do you think it coud be made with mesh and some elastic for around the carseat as a bug cover? I had one years ago but it is long gone now. I love it for those muggy buggy days to keep baby bug free without have to apply anything and still have plenty of airflow.

This is so cute! I just wish I had a sewing machine so I could actually make one. I’ll just have to file it under “reasons I need a sewing machine”. A list, I might add, which seems to grow every day depending on how much I browse Pinterest that day. 😉
