Rain Cloud Art & Music Activity & Teaching Toddlers How to Use Glue

April 27, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

Dear Spring,

Your killing us with all this rain. We are doing our best to keep busy and happy inside, but are hoping May brings flowers and no more of these showers. To show our appreciation for all this moisture we are dedicating this activity to you. Know that you are officially recognized and that you can feel free to go on your merry way!

Sincerely,
Sunny Sky Hopefuls

So I’m sure many of you are like me and trying to keep the kids entertained and distracted from the fact that outside is not an option everyday. Here is a little Art/Music Project that is super easy, uses what you already have and will keep the kiddos busy for a good few minutes.

Items needed:

White Cardstock
Blue paper
Scissors
Glue
Q-tips
Condiment dish

Since my little guy is not yet 2 1/2 I did all the cutting, but older kids can handle this on their own. Cut out a Cloud shape from the white and lots of raindrops in varying sizes from the blue. This can be a fun way to teach about big and small.

I decided it was high time my guy had his first experience with Elmer’s so I pulled out a few helpful tools to minimize the mess.

He loved dipping the Q-tips in the glue and doing it all by himself. After a while, the cotton starts to stretch so I recommend changing Q-tips a few times so the end stays intact and easy to work with.

He also liked choosing which raindrop to use and where to put it. Sometimes with toddlers it is all about giving them choices. I like that this made him feel really independent. Frankly, I have never seen him this quiet and concentrated!

Success!

After our little Rain Cloud Art Project, I taught him some rain songs. Basically, the only ones I could think of, I was too lazy to look any up.

We sang:

  • Rain, Rain, Go Away
  • I’m Just a Little Black Raincloud (from Winnie the Pooh)
  • It’s Raining, It’s Pouring

I have been realizing that lots of little kids rhymes and songs are kind of gruesome. Now, my little guy insists that the old man “broke” his head, not just “bumped” it.

Here’s a little clip I caught halfway through…

When I told the hubs what we had done, he suggested the song “Rain drops keep falling on my head.” That may have been one with a happier spin. 😉 I can’t help that my songs have one saying “Go AWAY”, one pretending to be something else so you can steal, and one with a man dying.

Just thought I would share. I know if you live in UT you will have plenty of time to use this in the next three days with highs in the 40s!

Feature Friday-Blog Swap with Treasures for Tots

April 9, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

Hello to everybody at A Little Tipsy!

A HUGE thank you to Michelle for this opportunity to introduce y’all to my blog, Treasures for Tots!

My name is Angie and my blog is pretty much a place where I create all kinds of different fun stuff for my Darling Little Stinker, Serenity.

At 3 1/2 years old, she of course knows everything. Not only is she a little smarty pants, but she’s very funny and totally cute! The brat has got me wrapped around every single one of her tiny little fingers!

Anytime I come up with an idea it’s usually with Serenity in mind. Clothing, pictures, activities, even play food!

What is your favorite crafting tool or secret weapon?
That’s gotta be my glue gun and my Canon 40D. I use those two everyday! My secret weapon is definitely Photoshop! I’m a amateur photographer so I make a ton of mistakes and Photoshop corrects most them – as long as I don’t mess up too bad!

What is your favorite activity to do with your toddler?
Spending time with her! What we do changes from day to day. It’s pretty much whatever she wants me to do. Read books, play with her toys, bring her shopping, make things for her, show her how to do something – it’s the little things that keep both of us amused!

If you were a clothing brand which would you be and why?
That’s an awful lot of work designing your own clothing brand! I know a few designers and they are busy full time – it’s such a hectic schedule. I’m so much more laid back!

Even so, after a year of blogging I have quite a few projects, tutorials, giveaways, and craft parties posted on my blog!

Felt foods are one of my favorite crafts, but I want to be able to make it as quick and easy as possible! The sewing kind is beautiful, but who has that much time? Most of my felt foods involve my totally hot glue gun. But I do a little sewing too!

Another one of my hobbies is sewing! I really enjoy sewing – even though I’m kinda slow! I kinda just learned how do any “real” sewing. A little more than a year ago I bought my first ebook patterns from YCMT.com. Before that, I basically only knew how to sew a straight line – and yes, it was straight ’cause that’s all I could do – over and over!

Ebook patterns are so a lot easier than traditional patterns, since they have step-by-step pictures to show you exactly how to sew each step! I’ve been sewing so much lately that I’ve gotten a little brave and came up with a couple of easy skirt patterns on my own! Emphasis on the word easy!! Nothing too complicated!

Just click on a picture to learn how to make my Jelly Roll Skirt or my fun Twirly Tee Tutu Skirt!

I also have an Etsy store, called Treasures for Tots. I have a Jelly Roll skirt listed in my store and some clippies. My favorite clippies to make are the mismatched ones and the BIG butterflies! I still have a few other things I want to list in my store, like Serenity’s favorite necklace the Fairy Catcher!

Click Serenity’s picture to learn how to make one!

I’ve posted a few yummy recipes too – maybe something you never tried before?!! I’m from South Louisiana, so I just had to blog about my delicious Jambalaya recipe – I promise that you’ll love it! I also show you how I make Spam Musubi! You don’t know what that is? Well check it out by clicking on the picture below!

I have lots more tutorials on my blog, along with a few more recipes, a crafty party every Thursday called Thursday’s Treasures where you can link up anything creative you’ve been doing, and GIVEAWAYS too!

So don’t forget to stop by Treasures for Tots to take a look-see around and maybe show a little love by posting a comment or two too!

Thank you Michelle for allowing me to say hello to your awesome readers!!

Have fun!

That felt food is oh so fun and if it involves a glue gun I can totally rock it. I am in love with the tutu skirt. Can I wear it? Ok, maybe I will have to be patient and wait until I have a little girl. Thanks Angie for swappin’ it up with me today!

Kids Valentine Hand Print Heart Art Project

February 10, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 17 Comments

You know how I love a good hand print art project. So for Valentine’s of course we needed a heart. This Valentine Hand Print Heart Art Project is so easy and turns out really cute! All you need is some paper and a little red paint.

(not the first time he’s been caught red handed, ha ha)

Just paint your hand red and place with fingers close together on your paper. Then repeat with the other hand overlapping the fingers to make a heart.

We made one with mom and son’s hands, though his heart turned out WAY cuter than mine. I think mine looks like some monster that is going to eat his.

But, I hung it up anyway of course.

We made some heart hand prints to send to family…

and then I just let him go to town and make a whole bunch of valentines all by himself for his cousins. I even let him use the fancy scissors (his first time using any scissors) and he was pretty darn good at it!

Linking up with Show and Tell at Blue Cricket Design.

Feature Friday-Cupkateer

January 22, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

First off, a bit of business. The winner of the door hanger from Needle in a Haystack is…
Ally! Congrats!

Now, I am really excited to be doing a swap for Feature Friday today!
I’ll turn the time over to Ananda to share some fun crafts and ideas!
You’ll get to see the little monster that made me fall in love with her!
———————————————————————————-

Hi there. It’s Ananda from Cupkateer.
I’m excited to be swapping with Michelle for the day!

I am mommy to a busy 18 mo old, Magoo, and wife to an amazing guy. I work part time for a non-profit agency aimed at helping and strengthening families, and craft full time at home. I am a self proclaimed “Cupkateer” (my made up word for someone who makes cupcakes and all things creative and crafty) Want to see some of my favorite projects?

Felt Garden. This project is not for the faint at heart. This took WEEKS of non stop sewing as soon as Magoo was in bed every night. But it turned out so cute and my lil’ farmer loves playing with it and harvesting all the goods.

Stuffed Animal Child Harness. Got kids that love to run, especially in a public place? Here’s a tutorial for an oh so cute child harness made from a stuffed animal you have lying around.

And some delicious Cherry Limeade Cupcakes

I want to say thank you to Michelle for letting me swap with her. It was fun showing you a few of my favorite things. I hope to see you around my blog. There’s lots of other crafty goodness going on over there.

—————————————————————————-

That garden is amazing! Too bad my sewing skills are slightly below par. 😉 Great ideas Ananda! You are now entered in to the Hall of Fame as Tipster of the Week!
