Sesame Street Birthday Party

November 13, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 12 Comments

My little guy has a big thing for Elmo and Cookie Monster. So when birthday time rolled around it was an easy choice to do a Sesame Street birthday party. The primary colors were great and I had a blast adding faces to everything I could.

Elmo loves his crayons so we set up a coloring table and a bubble machine to entertain the guests while everyone arrived. I had no idea what a hit the bubble machine would be!

Each games prize coordinated with the character. Pin the nose on Elmo gave goldfish crackers (like Elmo’s pet Dorothy) in a fish bowl. Oscar’s trash toss players received gummy worms (like his pet Slimey). Ernie’s duck pond players kept their rubber ducky and also got  silly straw or punch ball depending on what number their duck said on the bottom.

Each guest got also took home Sesame Street character playdough, Cookie Monster’s cookies, an Elmo book and Sesame Street character bubbles.

Hints for creating a budget friendly yet swanky Sesame Street party:

HINT #1 Use your (or your friends) craft cutter to your advantage!

This is the first party I have done with my Cricut mini and it was a huge help! Choose from TONS of Cricut Cartridges! I used the Cricut Sesame Street – Friends Cartridge to make:

  • Lincoln Street sign (Sans Serif font)
  • Playdough, bubble and drink Sesame Street character faces
  • Cookie Monster Shirts – heat transfer on blue shirts
  • Dorothy on fish bowls
I used other cricut shapes like scallops, circles, and labels to make:
  • Lincoln is Two banner
  • Sesame Street character faces (Scallop-Snowflke from Best images of 2009 cartridge)
  • Food, game, and prize labels (DnceTeam Label from Twinkle Toes cartridge with Sesame Street Elmo’s Party font)
Want to know my other secret weapon?
HINT #2 Discount stores! Shopping smart at budget friendly stores for your party does not have to look well…cheap.
Dollar Tree supplies:
  • Playdough
  • Elmo Books
  • Bubbles
  • Mondo drinks
  • Cookie Monster juice
  • Clear fruit & veggie platters
  • Silly Straws
  • Punch balls
Wal-mart supplies:
  • Bubble machine
  • Chips Ahoy individual packs
  • Crayons
  • Cupcakes (ordered cupcakes with blue grass tip frosting and finished myself with candy melts and chocolate chips for eyes and a chips ahoy mini cookie)
Ikea:
  • Mini canister “fish bowls”
  • Oscar’s trash bucket
HINT #3 Tie it all together with a fun color scheme or pattern. We stuck with primary colors and tied all the areas together using red polka dot wrapping paper. It was 50% off in the Christmas section at Hobby Lobby and cost me $4. I think it took the party to another level.
HINT #4 You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Be inspired by other parties with similar themes and put your own spin on it.
I was inspired by many other parties as you can see on my Perfect Party Pinterest board. Here are the references I used specifically…
Ernie’s Duck Pond and Oscar’s Trash Toss
Cookie Monster Cupcakes
Fruit and Veggie Sesame Street Character Faces
Sesame Street Character Faces on take homes
Chocolate covered Elmo Oreos
Scallop Sesame Street Character Heads
Dorothy Fish Bowls

Good luck planning your own Sesame Street Party!
I’d love to see it!

Superhero Squad Party Activities

December 8, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 10 Comments

Of course you need some great superhero squad training activities and we had no shortage. Planning and having everything prepared ahead is key to keeping things rolling smoothly. We had 10 different superhero training camp activities! Each one corresponded with a power from a favorite super hero.
1. Decorate your cape and mask.
  • We used a Walmart cape and mask set (about $5). They come in black, blue, red and green. Target has a cape with a wrap around front with muscles (about $5).
  • Decorate with foam letters. I had each child’s name ready to go, organized in an ice tray to make things fast and easy. All they had to do was peel and stick. No searching for letters or fighting over colors.
2. Web Shooting
  • Spraying silly string on villains from coloring books hung on a plastic tablecloth to protect walls and floor. We hung ours on the sliding glass door, hidden behind the vertical blinds until we were ready to play.
3. Flight Training
  • Playing Space Pop where you levitate to pop bubbles. A game from Kinect Adventures on the Xbox 360.

4. Bat Cave
  • Crawling in to the cave to get a glowing power bracelet.
  • Cover table and chairs with black plastic table cloths and hang strips of streamers from the ceiling (aka bottom of table). Tape glow stick bracelets between the streamers.
5. X-ray Vision
  • Peek behind the brick wall and try to remember all the items behind it.
  • Brick Wall Backdrop-purchased on Amazon

6. Super Strength
  • Pop balloons by squeezing, stomping or sitting on them.
7. Shield Throwing
  • Throwing a frisbee to explode a tower of cups.
  • Transform a dollar store frisbee in to a shield with vinyl or glued card stock.
8. Final Exam
  • Lifting a “barbell” to test their superpowers.
  • Use quick dry craft glue and spray paint to transform two dollar store balls and a rain stick into a barbell. You can also use a dowel and two styrofoam balls, but they are pricey for my taste.
9. Receive superhero name and official training certificate.
  • Certificate designed using one of Microsoft’s free certificate templates.

10. VIP visitors
  • Batman and Robin (cute high school students I met at a Halloween party and hired to come) signed their certificates and helped the kids find their signature superhero pose.
The kids had a blast with all these superhero squad training camp activities!

Super Hero Squad Party Decor

December 8, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

Decor is what can take your party to the next level. I wanted items that would make the kids feel like they were the characters in their very own super hero squad comic. Also, the birthday boy loves seeing anything with his name on it, so personalization is key.
Outside and Entry
  • Super hero balloons for guests to easily spot the house
  • Welcome to super hero training sign
  • Super Hero balloons in front room
  • Super hero gift bags on table to show where to place gifts
Upstairs
  • Personalized printable skyline from Anders Ruff makes your wall a giant coloring book.
  • Banner using cards from Phase 10 kids. Hang cards on ribbon with mini clothes pins covered with cardstock lightning bolts. Take it down and it doubles as a gift!
  • Personalized 3D origami stars from Origami Delights on tables
  • Vinyl and Cardstock shapes (boom, pow, masks, shields, etc) cut using craft cutter to spread around
Downstairs:
  • Happy Birthday Banner using awesome super hero head shots from artist Michael Myers. Print the art and letters and hang from giant ric rac with tiny clothes pins covered with cardstock lightning bolts.
  • Bat Cave-Cover table with black plastic table cloths and dangle streamers inside. I added chairs and toys to make it look more bumpy, like a cave.
  • Brick Wall Backdrop-purchased on Amazon
And that my friends is how to transform your house in to a super hero squad comic.
Be sure to visit our printable invite template post and coming up later today… food, super hero squad training activities, and party favors!
