YW Birthday Gift Idea

Ok, so I shared this idea long ago, but finally took pics and got the saying for you. It’s only like a few months later. 😉 But, I thought they were cute so I wanted to share anyway.

The note says (by Diana Lee):
“Be strong
Be of good courage
Be not afraid
Follow in HIS footsteps and thou will not be dismayed.”

I love how it ties in to this years mutual theme Joshua 1:9.


They could be a fun tuck in treat for camp.

YWYM Mutual Theme Be Strong and of a Good Courage Tile

I love this year’s Young Men Young Women Mutual theme! Be strong and of a good courage. I mean they are always good, but I feel like this is just what our youth need right now. I know there are a gazillion theme ideas out there, but I wanted to share what we do in our ward.

Each year we make a mutual theme tile display to put on the table in our YW room. Each week during opening exercises and after we recite the YW theme, we recite the mutual theme. We also have a copy of the theme laminated that we use to recite it with the YM on mutual night.

The kids learn it really fast and I love that they have it memorized! That way they can recite it in their heads whenever they may need it.

I made the tile this year. It was so easy. I just covered it with some scrapbook paper, printed out the theme, chalked the edges and added some embellishments. I already had everything I needed at home.

Remember these courage washer necklaces we made for our Beehives for Christmas? They are a fun way to reinforce the theme too!

YW lesson 6 Handout: Sharing Work in the Home

So I was pondering what to give my church girls this week as handout. Lesson 6 is on sharing work in the home so I immediately thought something “houseworky” but not totally lame. I took a trip to the Dollar Tree and this is what I came up with.

To incorporate the wands, I am going to talk about the fairies in Sleeping Beauty and how everything was done by magic, so when they went to make the cake and the dress for Sleeping Beauty’s birthday and could not use magic it was a real mess. I am going to compare it to how sometimes we think things will be magically done by our mothers, but we need to learn to do them ourselves so when the time comes and we are own our own we aren’t stuck in a mess.

I think they turned out rather cute. I got the “magic erasers”, the heart sticks and the tulle all at the dollar store so I was only out 3 bucks! I hot glued two corners of the message on so it would stay together, but then they could rip it off and use the eraser.

As a bonus idea that would be fun for some Sunday service you could make these adorable Rice Krispie Hershey Kisses. I got the idea from Homemaking Fun. Use the funnel trick! It makes them sooo easy!! They have her funnel at Dollar Tree, saw it today! Mine is a little different, but I just squished the top a little after I took it out to round it a bit. I made the message with a Sharpie (I wish I had a blue one!) and parchment paper so it would have that thin feel like in the real kisses.

We did heart attacks this week for our Young Women activity. We cut out tons of paper hearts and then picked a few family’s in the neighborhood who we thought could use some extra love. We spread out tons of hearts on the porch along with a Rice Krispie Hershey Kiss for each family member. Then, the girls would ring the doorbell and run.

The girls loved it and one of our less active girls even said it was the funnest thing she’d ever done. Score!!

YW Lesson 4 Handout and Object Lesson: Obeying Commandments Helps us Fulfill Our Divine Roles

If you are giving YW lesson 4 Obeying Commandments Helps us Fulfill our Divine Roles, here is what I am giving out as a handout for the girls.

I am using the Orange Armor of God object lesson written by Melanie with a little twist. Instead of peeling the second orange and putting the slices in one by one, I am going to list the things that can destroy our armor with each piece I peel and then plop the whole orange in at once. That is how I remember seeing it.
I found the YW lesson 4 handout by Daisie Dance (on Sugardoodle) to go along with the object lesson and printed them 6 to a page in Word. I tied the handout to a Clementine to reinforce the orange object lesson and give them a little extra treat.
