10 Tips for Allergy Friendly Decorating

I have allergies. I have had ever since I can remember. When spring comes and things start to look pretty my congestion gets ugly. My mom says I had a runny nose since birth. Lovely, I know. Allergies are the pits. Lucky for us there are ways to help control the sniffle, sneeze, head exploding joy by making some alterations in our home decor. Cool right?! Here are ten tips on how to make your home decor work for you and your (or your family’s) allergies.

10 Tips for Allergy Friendly Decorating
  • Keep clutter free and easy to dust or rotate frequently so things aren’t sitting. I love to rotate my living room decor based on season so this help eliminate things collecting dust.

  • Buy allergy friendly indoor plants. Here’s a great list of allergy friendly indoor plants and believe it or not many of them are beautiful and colorful!
  • Use fake flowers and greenery. I would never be able to have fresh lilacs in the house, but I love how the silk version looks in this pitcher aside my cherry blossom branch!
  • Leather couches instead of cloth are easier to wipe down. Admittedly, my couches are microfiber, but they are second best for wipe down purposes especially when scotch guarded.
  • Use washable bedding and wash in hot often. My son has an organic allergy friendly mattress pad and comforter from Natura that have been great!
  • Hang easy to wipe blinds instead of drapes that collect dust
  • Have a chest to store toys that are not in use so they don’t sit and collect dust. I like this one that is simple, but has a little something special in that it resembles a treasure chest.
  • Use washable rugs so you can toss them in the washing machine as needed
  • Paint over wallpaper collects less dust on the walls
  • Use tile or wood on floors instead of carpet that collects dust and germs. I have a lot of carpet, but I have it cleaned with the changes of the seasons and vacuum with a HEPA filter.

As you can see the theme here is pretty much stay dust free. That is the key to keeping your indoor allergies in check.

Make a Memory {Dates for Kids}

Here we are, week 2 of the Make a Memory series. Each Monday now through the end of August I will feature a special family tradition from one of my favorite bloggers. It is so important to create lasting memories with our families and this will be a fun way to get ideas for fun traditions we can start with our own families. So let’s get started and see how Stacy from Not Just a Housewife and her family make a memory!

I am tired of being the “mean” one. I make the kids do their homework, I make them do their jobs, I break up fights, I send them to time out, I take away privileges, I threaten, I make them hug when they are mean to each other, I make them clean their room (everyday), etc. I think you get the idea.

And my husband? He comes home from work and wrestles and plays with them until it is time to go to bed. So in an effort to be considered some what fun and nice I instituted a new tradition that my kids have named their “special day”.

Every Saturday I take one of the kids and we do some activity of their choice. The only stipulation is that is can’t cost a lot of money. We spend part of the day having some quality one on one time. We have been doing this for about a year now and I have to say I think it has improved my relationship with my kids.

Some of the things we have done are: ice cream cones at McDonald’s, the park, feeding the duck at the local pond, picnics, going up the canyon, visiting the “cowboy” store (Cal-Ranch), a trip to the local garden center, and catching butterflies with a butterfly net in the fields by Grandma’s house. My oldest boy is the first, then we take turns down the line. Pretty much whatever my oldest picks to do the others want to do for their day. So I have done some of those things 3 times!

It takes an effort to remember and to set aside the time to do it. But I would highly recommend it. My kids look forward to it and start planning their day weeks in advance. It gives us a chance to have some much needed one on one time where we can really talk. Sometimes we are just silly the whole time. I don’t think it matters what you do. The point is they feel valued because you took the time to be with them. I am still primarily the mean one, but at least now they know I CAN be fun!

I am so going to start this with my 3 year old. Since little brother came along we have lost a lot of our mom and son fun time. It is usually mom take the baby and Dad take Aiden. I love this plan to set aside one on one time! Thanks for the great way to make a memory Stacy!

Feature Friday {Gwenny Penny}

Hey, everybody! I’m so happy to be blog swapping with Michelle today. I’m Gwen, and I blog over at Gwenny Penny. I’m an engineer turned middle-school math teacher turned full-time mom of two little girls, and I blog in order to make sure that I carve out some creative time just for me each week.

I love sewing, crafting, and just about everything creative (even a little woodworking).

I’d love to introduce you to a few of my favorite projects…

I’m guilty of feeding my 16-month-old daughter her finger food right on the table at restaurants. Gross? Yes… have you seen them wipe down the tables before?! I decided to make a place mat that I could easily tuck in my bag to bring with us when we go out to a restaurant. Thus, the Out to Eat Place Mat was born. It even holds a set of toddler-sized flatware.

I created the Dot, Dot, Dot Pillow for Valentine’s Day, but it could be done in any color combination. A red and green would look great for Christmas, or an orange and black for Halloween.

And since I work with Michelle on the Point of View creative collaboration project, you may have seen some of these projects, too…
