Dunking Oreos with a Fork

April 14, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 16 Comments

Thank my Daddy for this little tip. He has been dunking his Oreos with a fork for as long as I can remember. It’s a great way to enjoy cookies and milk without dunking fingers or only getting half the cookie. Just poke your fork tines in to the white center and you are good to go!

I love me some Oreos and milk!

Oreo did not in any way compensate me for this post, though I would accept a lifetime worth of Oreos, or heck one free package for my trouble. ๐Ÿ˜‰

New Sew Fleece Blankets and Disney’s Give a Day

March 11, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 6 Comments

Everyone has seen cozy fleece blankets, but have you made your own? They are really easy and require only five supplies.

Supplies Needed for No Sew Fleece Blankets:

  • Fleece (I used 2 yards for each blanket, $4.44/yd at Wal-Mart)
  • Cutting mat
  • Rotary tool
  • Measuring tool
  • Masking tape

1. Lay out your fleece and cut off the selvage.
2. Cut 3 inch squares out of each corner. Mark with masking tape from corner to corner so you know where to cut your fringe to.
3. Cut two finger thick and 3 inch long strips with the rotary cutter down the edges to make the fringe.
4. Fold the fringe up toward the center of the blanket and cut tiny slits in the center of each strip.

5. Pull the end of the strip through the slit. Repeat with all strips going through the slits in the same direction.

I think they turned out really nice and the best part is they went to Project Linus who makes blankets for children in the hospital.

We did this as part of Disney’s Give a Day, Get a Day Program where you give a day of service and receive a voucher for a free day at Disneyland. Not bad! But, I hear they have almost reached the limit of one million people for the free ticket program so act fast if you are interested in volunteering. See all the info here.

Feature Friday-Love Actually

January 1, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 7 Comments

As many of you know one of my goals for 2010 is to go on a planned date once a month with my hubby. Well, I am so excited about today’s feature because it is totally going to help me reach that goal. Our Feature Friday for today is Cher from Love Actually.

Cher describes her blog as follows: “Love is often seen as something that perpetually runs itself…without effort. In reality, love actually takes workโ€ฆand, in my experience, romance takes even more work..and it’s not always cheap! But itโ€™s much too wonderful to skip out on! My goal is to make all of it just a little bit easierโ€ฆand a little bit cheaper!” I love that! It’s so true!

Now, I know you are all dying to hear more, so on to the one minute interview:

What is your favorite crafting tool or secret weapon?

My 12×12 paper cutter. Boring, I know. But, for the life of me, I CANNOT cut straight lines. Luckily this wasn’t a requirement to pass kindergarten….or college.

What was the most creative date you have ever been on?

Once for date night, my husband set up a “craft championship” at home. He set up our living room like a boxing ring, and had all my craft bins all around the “ring”. As I walked in, he announced the competitors for this craft championship (him and I) like an announcer would. We each had certain craft challenges we had to do using certain items (ribbon, scissors, 3 pieces of paper, a button, etc.) within a time limit. It was a well-planned and very creative date…and just that he was willing to create a date around my creative/crafty interests was amazing! Yeah…I think I’ll keep him. ๐Ÿ™‚

What is the best piece of advice you can give those of us who are getting back in to dating after having a baby?

There’s one thing I know for sure and that is that if something, anything really, is not nourished and developed, it’ll never grow…it’ll never last. Although new moms find it hard to find the time and although money might be tight, it’s so very important to make your marriage a priority (and date nights can play a vital role in this). Think of it this way, once you have children, it’s going to be at least 20 years before all of them are out of the house when you are hubby are once again left alone. If you haven’t taken the time to continually develop that relationship, what could possibly be left after 20 years? Even if it’s once a month or once a week for 10 minutes, babysitter or no babysitter…. there’s no excuse not to date. Not time. Not money. Dating doesn’t always need to involve leaving the house or planning some extravagant activity. Love Actually has lots of fun ideas that are CHEAP, fun, and done right at home. Now, who’s up for a date?!

Who plans the anniversary date, you or the hubs?

Theoretically: We take turns every other year. Realistically: I plan for months in advance of doing something uber-creative…but then run out of time…and it defaults to him to think of something uber-creative in less than a week.

Now, let’s dig in to the good stuff! Follow me for some sparks of romantic creativity.

Fantasy Football
My husband would seriously die and think he was in heaven immediately if I planned this!

Chinese Date Night
Call me crazy, but eating on the floor with chopstick sounds fun to me!

Love Debit Card
I love surprises and this would be so fun to sneak in to his wallet to see when he would find it.

Lovopoly
We used to play Disney monopoly together all the time. This is a super fun twist!

Gestures of Love
My hubs has been having some uber long days at work lately. Yesterday he went in at 7:00 and got home after 7. I think he would love to find this in his email box.

If you are looking for something a little more sexy and adventurous, here are some of Cher’s fave ideas. Enjoy!

Booty Camp

Crime & Punishment: Court in Session

Great ideas Cher! I can’t wait to try them out! You are now entered in to the Hall of Fame as Tipster of the week!

Four Tips for Making Goals for the New Year

December 30, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 6 Comments

The new year is almost here and what does that mean? A sense of renewed motivation to better myself, time to make a goal list for 2010. Here are a few tips to help you make a goal list that is realistic and reachable.

http://www.thealexandergroup.com/cmsimages/goals.jpg

1. Sort. Break down the areas of your life into categories and choose one or two goals for each area. My categories were:

  • Physical Health
  • Spiritual
  • Family-one for hubs, one for son
  • Personal-something just for me
  • Home-aka housework
  • Work-my blog and online marketing consulting since I am a SAHM

2. Specific. Don’t say “eat better”, say the exact action you want to achieve, like “eat two servings of vegetables everyday”. You need something concrete that cannot be argued or justified.
3. Simple. Pick something realistic to achieve. No really. For instance, I don’t do organized exercise. I don’t go to the gym, so I should not make a goal to workout for an hour five days a week. Make it easy enough that you will stay motivated to do it past the first week of the year.
4. State. Write down your goals and post them where you will see them everyday. I am probably turn mine in to a dry erase check list. It is also helpful to tell someone your goals so they can help keep you on track.

Monday we had a family home evening lesson on goals, but rather than bore our poor two year old by making personal lists of goals at the end we decided to head to the playroom for a few minutes of hardcore fun before pj time. So today while he entertained himself with building boats out of blocks I decided to reflect on things I would like to change for the New Year.

There are always hundreds of things I could list. I literally went through once and wrote down the time it would take to do all the things I would like to be routine in my household. It added up to about twice as much time as I actually have. This was a nice eye opener that I will never achieve my goals unless they are realistic.

Here are some of the things I came up with (see I am stating them so you can hold me accountable. ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

  • Health: organized exercise 30 minutes 3x per week (turning it in to a Biggest Loser type competition with hubs to keep motivated)
  • Spiritual: Go to the temple once a month, Read scripture 5 minutes per day (already doing these as goals from last year so this will just be upkeep)
  • Family: 1 planned date per month with hubs, 15 min uninterrupted play time with son each day (Again, I will have hubs and son to keep me on track)
  • Personal: 1 non due date project per week
  • House: 30 minutes cleaning in a non-regular use area per week
  • Work: Double my blog readers

I am excited for the new year and can’t wait to get started on my new list of goals! What’s on your goal list for 2010?
