I Love to See the Temple-Hand Print Spires

August 26, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 6 Comments

As many of you know a new LDS temple (Oquirrh Mountain) was dedicated on Sunday. I felt really blessed to be able to attend the dedication and hear some wonderful uplifting words. My sister and I traded babysitting so that we could each attend a session. One of my favorite things said was something like this…You have a room in your house for eating, you have a room in your house for sleeping, you have a room in your house for TV, but do you have room in your house for Christ?”

I decided that it would be fun to have some Sunday appropriate temple activities and mementos for the kiddos to remember this special day. I found a cute temple coloring page on Mormon Share to start them off. Then, I shrunk down the picture of the new Oquirrh Mountain Temple from LDS.org and printed them each a wallet size copy to keep. I meant to ask my niece how she felt about the new temple and record it for her journal, but ran out of time.

When googling “I love to see the temple coloring” I saw this quote in the third listing. “I love to see the temple. (put fingertips together to form a spire)” I got soooo excited!! How cute would that be, hand print temple spires. I clicked on the listing, but it turns out it is just actions to the song, not an actual art activity. Not anymore. I just traced the outline of their hands on a piece of paper with the angel Moroni printed at the top. It would be really cute to use finger paint or ink so you could see the detail of their tiny hand. It is almost like they are raising their little hand saying, “I love to see the temple.” Sorry if you are gagging now. See it on the fridge below.

The best part about this activity was today when we walked in to the kitchen to get a snack today, my son looked up pointed at the fridge and said, “temple.” Aaah, my heart fell out of my chest. Then, I got a good laugh as I realized I have 7, count them SEVEN, temple pictures on my fridge. Hello.

1. Lists our old wards goals, but they are good so I keep them up there.
2. My mini temple calendar where I keep track of what day we went to the temple each month with a little gold temple sticker. We went tonight, so dear me, that makes 8 temples on the fridge now.
3. A cute little card from Deseret Book that has part of the YW theme “Make and Keep Sacred Covenants.”
4. A magnet of a gorgeous photo of the SLC temple that his talented Aunt LaRae took. We bought at hubs family reunion.
(these two help hold a temple wedding announcement, he he)

5. The wallet size of the new Oquirrh Mountain temple
6. The coloring page
7. The hand print spires

I guess you could say that “I love to see the Temple.” hardee har har

YW Leadership Idea

August 17, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

Each month at our Young Women activity planning meeting we have a Leadership moment to teach the girls different aspects of a leader. I used this idea a few months ago when the meeting was at my house.

I had a coat rack with like 20 different hats (luckily between my son and I we had quite a few, then I borrowed more from family) for them to choose from. I had each of the girls pick a hat to wear, then read a description that corresponded with each hat of a quality they as a Young Women Presidency member would need to possess.

For instance:

  • Fireman hat-calming an argument
  • Construction hat-building people up
  • Sombrero-fiesta, enjoy yourself
  • Pirate-take control in rough seas
  • Tiara-make decisions
  • Mafia (plastic fedora)-have each others back
  • Wheaties baseball cap-wholesome thoughts and activities
  • Visor-helps us see clearly
  • Snow hat-help others have a warm snugly feeling
  • Roots hat from the Olympics-coming together with one goal
  • Easter hat-not being afraid to show spiritual side
  • Sparkly winter hat-let your personality sparkle
  • Beach hat-sunny, good attitude

You can make something up for any hat.

I then printed each girl the following hat handout to take home.

BTW, it is my 5 year wedding anniversary today! Love you babe!

YW lesson 32 Personal Purity through Self-Discipline Handout

August 8, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

This is a handout idea for anyone who has to teach the Young Women lesson 32 on Personal Purity through Self-Discipline. It is to go along with Ann’s great object lesson I found by way of Sugardoodle (they have a ton of other ideas for this lesson too).

“As an object lesson/handout for this lesson, I gave each of the girls a couple of plain Vanilla wafers at the beginning of class – I told them if they wanted to, they could eat the cookies, but they would be “rewarded” if they didn’t eat them (none of them ate them). At the end of the lesson I handed each girl a big heart sugar cookie that I had frosted with pink frosting, and wrapped in saran wrap – I had a tag attached with a ribbon which read “when we exercise self control, we will receive “sweet” rewards”. The girls LOVED this (they would love anything that was food related actually ) but this was a successful object lesson and handout.” (Idea by Ann)

We are changing it up a little bit and giving chocolate chip cookies at the end instead. Here is the YW lesson 32 handout that we attached to the bags:

August Visiting Teaching Handout

August 3, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

The August Visiting Teaching message this month is on continuous lifelong learning. For the handout, I chose the following scripture. D&C 93:36–37 “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth. Light and truth forsake that evil one.” I felt like it could apply to sisters of all ages and education levels.

There are a myriad of great quotes in the full message to help you personalize the message for your sisters circumstances. If you would like to print the 4×6 version of the August visiting teaching handout please click on the thumbnail below.
