Ode to the Pioneers-Make Your Own Butter

July 22, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

We had a Family Home Evening on Pioneers (preparing for trek next week) the other night and as our activity made our own butter. I thought I would share this just in time for Pioneer Day the 24th! I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but it was great and it entertained my husband and nearly 20 month old son for a good 15 minutes.

All you need to make your own butter is:

  • A baby food jar (we only had the big ones, but I think the small ones would work better)
  • Whipping cream-a half pint should suffice unless you have a big family or want a lot of butter.

Just give each family member a jar (we just did one jar because I wasn’t sure how the attention spans would last) and fill it 1/4 to 1/2 full of whipping cream. Then, shake, shake, shake, until it is the consistency of whipped butter. If there is liquid, just keep shaking. It will be really soft unless you put it in the fridge.

I made cornbread (from a mix) to go along with it and my boys LOVED it! We ate the whole pan.

July Visiting Teaching Handout

July 1, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

I was such a slacker last month, that I decided to get July’s VT handout posted on the 1st. Look at me, so on top of things! So now, even the most diligent Visiting Teachers can use it!

This months message is about temples so I really wanted to use a picture of the temple. We live closest to the Jordan River Temple, but I used the Salt Lake Temple because that is where I got married and let’s face it, it is timeless!

Feel free to print it off if you would like to use it! Now, go and do!

June Visiting Teaching Handout

June 26, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

If you are a slacker like me and have not done your June visiting teaching yet, here is a handout to take along. I tried to do 4th of July, but in my 10 minute time allotment got more of Rusty barn star.

Feel free to use it if you like! You have 5 days left. 😉

Father’s Day and Trek Advice Needed

June 7, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 9 Comments

Ok friends, I am in need of some advice. Someone from my ward must have read my Redneck Mother’s Day Post because I am now helping with the Father’s Day Gifts for my ward. Serves me right for chuckling at the flowers given out in napkins. Once again, it is a budget of $1. Any ideas? My top two ideas so far:

  • my hubby said that Harbour Freight has a bin of $1 tools so we could get a variety and they could choose one
  • a big cookie from Paradise bakery YUM!
Also, my hubby and I were called into the the Stake President’s office this morning to find out we were being called on Trek. Those of you that are LDS probably know what that means, but for those who do not, it means walking 40 miles in 3 days while pulling a handcart and wearing a dress in July heat. It is really an amazing experience as we take the youth on a “field trip” to reenact the Pioneer’s trek to Utah. I am SO excited because my ancestors (Mary Lawson Kirkman and Robert Lomax Kirkman) were part of the Martin Handcart Company so I will be able to get a glimpse of what they went through and what they sacrificed.

So, FanTasTic news that we get to go, BUT all the other leader couples were called a couple of months ago so we are way behind. We have babysitters for the little guy (thanks Aunt Jen and Grandma and Pappa!) and we walked a mile and a half tonight, but that is all we have done to prepare (not bad in the whole 10 hours we have had so far). Any advice? If you could take one thing what would it be? Clinical strength deodorant? 🙂
