No Sew Burlap Easter Egg Pillow

March 17, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 18 Comments

Now that St. Patty’s is past I was in the mood to get a little Easter Craft on. I had seen some burlap pillows around the blogoshpere and thought it would be fun to make a burlap Easter egg pillow. But, alas, I have no sewing machine thus, the No Sew Burlap Easter Egg Pillow was born or laid. ha ha ha.

1. I cut out a pattern for the size of egg I wanted. Then I traced this on to the burlap and cut out the two sides.
2. I laid out the ribbon and sequins to see what pattern I liked and cut with about an inch extra on either end.

3. I snipped the burlap strings where I wanted the ribbon to be woven in and pulled the strings out toward the center to prevent the edges from fraying.
4. I wove the ribbon in going over 10 strings and under. I alternated the pattern so the over on one ribbon area would be the under on the next.
5. I hot glued the sequin strings in place.
6. I wrapped the extra length of ribbon around the back and glued it.

7. I hot glued the edges of the two sides of the egg a bit at a time. Once about halfway glued, I began stuffing the pillow with plastic grocery bags (idea here). I alternated stuffing and gluing until the pillow was full.

Voila, one festive Easter pillow!

Last Minute Easter Gift Ideas for Kids

April 7, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

If you want your gift to have a somewhat spiritual note, try one of these ideas:

  • Eggs with the Easter Story inside-walks them through the Easter story and the last week of Christ’s life by opening each egg. They find an item, for instance 3 dimes to represent the 30 pieces of silver, and a corresponding scripture to tell the story.
  • Scripture tote bag-you can make your own out of a place mat (Our YW did this for an activity, my bag is shown below. Thanks Tami!)
  • Picture books of scripture stories with matching action figures. This is what my little guy is getting. I got them at Dollar Tree.

To have a little fun with your gift, try these:

  • Make a jelly bean necklace and bracelet set. They can wear it and eat it!jelly bean necklace
  • Kids Gardening tools-great spring theme and they can play with them in the yard (Long handle shovel, hoe or rake $3.50 each at Wal-mart this week)
  • Bunny Money for small gifts-they get to purchase from a “bank” of gifts like coloring books, bubbles, etc. with the money they find in their plastic eggs
  • A little chick that hatches out of an egg is fun. Just add water and watch the action. We got these from my sis last year and mom this year. I think they got them at Harmon’s for about a dollar.

Submerge egg in water. 24 hrs. later there is a little crack. 48 hrs. later you can see the chick.

As for me, I am hoping for a PedEgg in my basket! 🙂 Gotta get my footsies ready for flip flops!

Silk Tie Dye Egg Tutorial

April 6, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 8 Comments

Silk tie dying makes the most amazing looking eggs! You end up with bright intricate patterns that are more like art than egg dying! Go, find a few old silk ties (or blouses, or pajamas) and let’s get started!
Items needed:
  • Eggs
  • 100% silk ties (must be 100% silk or it will not work) The darker the pattern, the better it turns out. We got ties at D.I. for $2, but also used silk pajama pants.
  • Cotton cloth (we used old t-shirt others used pillowcases)
  • Twist Ties
  • Water
  • White Vinegar
  • Glass or Enamel pan
1. Cut fabric into squares big enough to fit around the eggs.
2. Wrap the eggs in silk making sure to cover the entire shell.
3. Wrap the silk wrapped egg in the cotton fabric and tie the top with a twist tie.
4. Put all wrapped eggs in pan and cover them completely with water
5. Add 3 T. White Vinegar to water
6. Bring to a boil and let boil 20-25 minutes. (More time makes the pattern more vibrant)
7. Scoop the eggs out and lay them on a cookie sheet or to cool a little.
8. Unwrap eggs and marvel at the patterns!
We had a lot of fun doing this! We had kids ages 5-65 participating.
