American Stars and Stripes Pillow

June 19, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 7 Comments

I love our flag. The colors are awesome. It’s clean and crisp and represents so much! I love decorating with it. I also love things that look like they took a lot of work when they were SUPER easy! Thus, I was thrilled to find this American flag placemat for like $3 that would so easily translate in to a faux quilted throw pillow.

American Stars and Stripes Placemat Pillow
SUPPLIES:
Placemat (from ShopKo)
Seam Ripper
Polyfil
Binder clips
Needle
Thread
DIRECTIONS:
Use the seam ripper to make an opening about half the width of the side of the placemat.

Stuff tight with Polyfil. Hold opening closed with binder clips and stitch closed using the existing holes from the original thread. Slide the binder clips along as you need more space to stitch.

Find the perfect spot for your cute new American stars and stripes pillow!

Valentine’s Day Valentines {Plane Awesome}

February 9, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 22 Comments

This is my first year making Valentine’s Day Valentines for my son to take to school. Of course we didn’t want anything too girly and they get way too much candy, so I took him to the dollar store to have a look. Luckily, we found six packs of airplanes for a dollar so we settled on a “plane” awesome theme!
Valentine’s Day Valentines: You’re just PLANE awesome!
We pretty much love them and they were so easy!
Plane awesome supplies:
  • Toy airplanes
  • Mini Glue dots
  • Color printer
  • White cardstock
  • Paper cutter
  • Glue (I used what came with the glitter)
  • Martha Stewart heart shaped glitter
We printed four of the following image to a page on white cardstock. That is what worked best with our size planes.

Cut out your cards and glue dot the wheels of the planes to the cards.

Draw three contrails (aka the white trails planes leave) from the back of the plane using your glue. Mix multiple colors of glitter hearts in a bowl. Pour the glitter on the glue and shake the excess glitter hearts back in to the bowl. Let the glue dry.

Voila! You have created a cool kid’s Valentine’s Day valentine that is just plane awesome and may I mention allergy safe! My sons class has gluten, nut and red dye allergies this year. Find a valentine treat that avoids all that, I dare you! Or do the easy road like me and just do a toy instead.

My son is happy to have a cool valentine and I’m happy it was extremely affordable and easy!

For Valentines

January 30, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

I am married to a geek which means I sometimes get to make geeky gifts. This year it is a geek valentine. I saw this idea on Paper, Plate and Plane and knew it would be perfect for valentines. They spray painted the keys and used rub on letters, but I am too lazy for that so I just bought two thrift store keyboards that matched and that was that!

Just pop off the keys, fill the frame with colored paper and hot glue the letters on to the glass. It’s that easy!
And it was a success! He loved it! Thought it was very clever. How do I know you may ask. Wasn’t this supposed to be for Valentines? Yes, yes it was, but he found it. Apparently, to me the top of the fridge is a good hiding spot. To the husband, it’s eye level. Whoops.
But, don’t worry. I have another geek Valentine up my sleeve. he he
