DIY Necklace: Quite a Spectacle

February 29, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

Leap day does not come often, so I wanted to share something special, that you probably won’t see often and is well, quite a spectacle. It is quirky and in true Tipsy fashion totally affordable DIY style! It’s a DIY necklace that makes quite a statement, but what else would you expect from a fun Anthro Knock off?

I shared this about a week ago on Brassy Apple as a part of her fun accessories series, but thought I would share here for anyone who missed it.

Anthropologie version: $498 (no longer available) My DIY necklace version: $7.50
That’s a 98.5% savings. 😉

DIY Necklace Supplies:
6 pairs of reading glasses (dollar store)
Glasses screwdriver
8-10 Jump Rings 12 mm
Chain

1. Gather your glasses and remove all stickers and tags. Use a tiny screwdriver to remove all the screws and remove the frames. Lay six pairs of glasses in a pattern that you like to prepare them to be put together.

2. Connect three pairs of glasses by placing the jump rings through the screw holes. Do this twice so you have two sets of three pairs of glasses.

3. Now connect the sets of glasses with three jump rings so the bottom of the necklace will be more rounded.

4. Add your chain. Use jump rings if it is just a chain. Mine was the chain to an old pocket watch so I just looped it through one side and hooked it on the other.

Now rock your new DIY necklace on and see what a spectacle you can make! And hey if you need reading glasses, you’ll never be short a pair!

Make Fabric Necklace

January 3, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 7 Comments

With the New Year Clean up and Organize fest I have been doing a bit of stash busting. I’m not sure who’s happier about it, me or my husband. I had a bit of a collection starting of things I had plans for. You guys know all about that, right? Tell me I’m not the only one. Anyway, I’ve seen so many cute fabric necklaces and decided to give it a go with my stash.
I like to call her Annabelle.
Isn’t she fun?! Chunkiness, bold colors/pattern and hardware all in one necklace. Ya, you’re pretty much going to die when you see how easy it is!
Make Fabric Necklace
Supplies:
Fabric D ring belt
(don’t have one, skip down to the bottom to make one)
Big Wooden Beads
Scissors
Cut a slit through the back side of the fabric on the belt jut below the d ring seam. Tie a knot in the opposite end of the belt where you want the beads to stop. Slide a bead in to the fabric tube through the slit all the way down to the knot. Twist your fabric and tie a knot after the bead. Add another bead and tie another knot. Continue until you have your desired look.

Fasten around your neck with the D rings. It is adjustable so you can make it the length you need with your current outfit.

Did you ever think it could be so easy to make a fabric necklace?!

No belt?
Just sew a fabric tube about 1.5 inches wide. Sew one end shut and fold the other end over a pair of D rings and sew. If you put the beads in before you sew one of the ends you won’t have to cut a slit.
I would love to see if you make one!

T shirt DIY

October 18, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Having the t shirt headband posted yesterday reminded me of a fun little mini series I came up with one night with my sisters in-law. I lovingly call it t shirt DIY or in other words …

5 Things you can make with an old t shirt!

Once upon a time there was a young maiden who was invited to a ball. It was special gala in celebration of the kingdom winning their region’s athletic competition. The ball was to have a magic light that would make anyone dressed vibrantly glow like the stars.

There was a fair maiden in the land who had nothing suitable to wear. She longed for a top that would gleam with the brightness of the sun. Saddened at the sight of her own closet her mother permissed her to search her quarters for the highly sought after garment.

Something magic happened that night in her mother’s closet. She found the one. The shirt that would put all others to shame. All at once the maiden was joined by three fairy godsisters. Hair was styled, make-up donned and garment transformed in to an 80’s style frock and five different accessories.

The maiden’s look was complete and with one of the Godsisters by her side to watch over her, she traveled across the kingdom to the ball for which she had painstakingly prepared.

1. Earrings-cut tiny strips (2 inch x 1/3 inch) of t shirt. Fold strip in half and loop them around big hoops pulling the ends through the loop. Repeat 5 times per earring for a fringe look.

2. Necklace-Inspired by one I had seen from More is More on Pinterest, tutorial there

3. 80’s style DIY shirt-Cut out neck and cut off some of the bottom if it is too long. Cut about 1 1/2 to 3 inches off the sleeves and fringe the sleeve by cutting vertical slits all around the sleeve. Cut slits all through the body of the shirt.

4. Headbands-Use the part you cut off the sleeve. Lay it flat with the part that is sew together on one end. On the non sewn end cut 2 to 3 slits about halfway through the sleeve. The fabric will roll making it look like 3 or four separate bands. Make a little rosette from leftover fabric and hot glue to one side.

5. Bracelet-Take a piece of the excess fabric (6 inches wide b y 10 or 12 inches long) and cut three slits almost all the way up leaving about an inch of fabric. Use the four strips and braid. Secure the ends together by wrapping with another piece of fabric and hot gluing in place.

All of these t shirt DIY projects are super easy, we did them all in about an hour which is why there are no photos of the steps.

Use them for a fun 80s costume or use some pretty fabric and have a bundle of cute accessories to wear anytime.

Rosette Headband

September 13, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

Being a mommy of little ones means getting ready fast, which often means ponytail and headband for me. The pony is fast and easy and the headband makes me feel a bit more feminine and put together as I chase boys all day. This rosette headband is one of my favorites. Not only because it is cute, but because it was insanely easy to make and cost me a few cents.

Rosette Headband

Supplies:
Scrap Fabric
Hot Glue
Thin Cardboard
Ribbon

  • Roll three rosettes. (tutorial here if you need it, I used hot glue, not fabric glue) One big and two smaller and glue each one to a circle piece of cardboard. Mine was a piece of tissue box that had a pretty grey flourish pattern on it I liked.
  • Glue the rosettes together and glue off centered on to a ribbon.

Let’s just clarify, I am not sporting a french twist. There is a messy bun hiding there on the side.

My fabric and ribbon were both in a scrap bag I got from Hobby Lobby for a dollar or two. There was some really great stuff in there I still need to use!

Here I am donning my rosette headband and ponytail at Peach Days this last weekend. Don’t the kids look thrilled about the parade?! That’s what happens when you find out they banned handing candy or anything else out to the crowd. Boo.

I really should make more of these in fun colors! I love that you just tie the ribbon at the base of your head so it is never too tight!
