Decorating Your Porch for Spring with $5

May 6, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 21 Comments

My poor porch needed a springy update and bad. Since the hubs has pretty much put the halt on my thrifting until I use and/or reinvent all the treasures I have previously brought home, figures. 😉 I used this opportunity to bring out some of my finds that have up until this point been neglected.

I shopped my house and with the exception of four $1 Hydrangea stems snagged from the Dollar Tree everything else was stuff I already had.

1. Watering Can Arrangement
I started out with this metal can I bought from the D.I. last summer for $1. Thus, the $5 cost up top, $4 in flowers, $1 for can. I spruced the can up a bit with a strip of burlap and ribbon bow, then arranged the Hydrangeas. Loved it, but it looked so lonely on the porch all alone.

2. Old Chair
I found this chair in the garage. My Bro in Law gave a few of them to us when he got married and upgraded his dining set. It is totally weathered because we left it on the deck one winter. We wanted to throw it out 100 times, but something told me no. Now I know why. It makes me smile. There was still a little something missing.

4. Wine Box
Swiped this from my little sis when she moved. Heaven knows where she got it. I think someone wrapped a wedding present in it? Added a little polka dot ribbon and looked for what the heck to put in it.

5. Glass Soda Bottles
Remembered the six pack of Grape Crush bottles I collected from a family party at my sister Amy’s house last weekend. My nieces and nephews thought I was a loon as my eyes gleamed as each one of them finished their drink and handed me the bottle and bottle cap. I knew I could do something with them.

So, here comes the poll. I thought it would be so cute to add drinking straws to each of the bottles for something original and to add an element of fun. Does it add summery fun, or make it look like a bunch of trash I left on my porch? See below and vote please!

Plain Bottles or Bottles with straws?

I need all y’alls opinions! All in all I am so very pleased with my new found springdom and the hubs is pleased with how many of my “treasures” I used. maybe I will be out of the thrifty doghouse soon. 😉 For now, stay tuned for more stash busting projects!

I like the straws…. way cute!!!! I have to admit, you, doing crafts makes me laugh!! Before you let your mind wander and get offended, it’s not about you, it’s your husband!!! I VERY DISTINCTLY remember my brother, in his sinle days….. saying “my WIFE will NEVER be allowed to do crafts” and I remember telling him, if it’s something she loves, you will let her. He adamantly disagreed, saying it wouldn’t be allowed! “If you love her enough and it’s something she wants… you will!!” I said. So I am sooooo happy to see that he loves you enough!!!!! 🙂 🙂

Thanks for sharing this. The chair beside my door was my great grandmothers. It sat on her patio for years. The paint is peeling, but it was hers and I think about her everytime I see it.

Love this, especially the blue combo. I think no straws and maybe a flower in some of the bottles? It’s your porch, you can do whatever you want!

Very darling…I think either way looks good. If it were me I would probably do no straws…but only because of how many kids come across my porch in one week!

Kind of unrelated, but I love that you’ve painted a little bit of blue on the white section next to the door. Our entry is similar, and that white has always bothered me – paint the whole thing or leave it white? Now I know. Thanks for the idea!!

I like it both ways. The straws add a little realism and whimsy. Love what you have done.

Love the new look! If it were me, I’d leave out the straws. Not because they aren’t cute, but because I know all the little kids passing by would want to try them out. Eeeew. 😉

Cute! I love the flowers on the chair! The bottles (or the straws) wouldn’t last 10 minutes at my house…And since my 9 year old just lopped the heads off of all my tulips, I’m not sure the flowers would last either. 🙂

What about a single gerbera in each bottle or other flower? I bought a holder with three bottles similar to yours saying “flowers” on a little disc on the top and I placed 3 flowers in each bottle and they are looking great as they are in my porch and are lasting longer due to the cool air!

I had to come over from our swap and see this post and check the date because I don’t know how I missed it! I LOVE this so much! My patio is in major need of a makeover and I can’t wait to incorporate some of your ideas! You’re the best, thanks Michelle!
