Show a Little Love: Man Themed Romance

February 8, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

Searching for a last minute Valentine’s romance ideas for your man? Here are some things I have done for my guy in the past. Some of these may not work as well for those of you who’s guy is not quite as geek prone, but it may spark some ideas for theme dates or fun things you could do. Here goes…

  • One year I wrote the hubs a love note in html (Internet programming language). He loves computers and thought it was awesome that I was “speaking his language.” You can just use Microsoft front page and write and edit as if you were in Microsoft word and it will “translate” it for you.

  • Another time, I used Star Wars quotes to send him on a hunt for to defeat Darth Tater. I sent some to him at work, hid some in his car etc. Each one had a little romantic memento like candles or massage lotion with it.

Here are some examples of quotes:

  1. “Attachment is forbidden. Possession is forbidden. Compassion- which I would define as…Unconditional love—is essential to a Jedi’s life. So, you might say that we are encouraged to love.” –Anakin Skywalker
  2. “Remember, concentrate on the moment. Feel…don’t think. Use your instincts”.-Qui-Gon Jinn
  3. “Search your feelings you know it to be true.” –Darth Vader
  4. “Ready are you? What know you of ready?…All his life has he looked away…to the future. To the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh” –Yoda

  • Last year for our anniversary we stayed at the Anniversary Inn in the Treasure Island Suite. That made this theme date even better, but you can do it at home. I bought a world map and covered it with Xs. Then I gave him a Pirate ship he had to move from X to X. Each X had a different activity card.

Here are some examples:

    1. Walk the plank ye landlubbers! (relax in a hot tub or bubble bath)
    2. Avast, yer drippin on the bough. Find yer sea legs and don a proper swagger. Eye, Eye Cap’n. (I had pirate themed jammies for both of us)
    3. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. By now ye have worked up quite a hankerin. (I had a bottle of sparkling cider and cheesecake)
    4. Yo ho, Yo ho a pirate’s wife for me. Look through the magic spyglass for some trainin on how to be a real pirate. (Watch Pirates of the Caribbean or another pirate themed movie)

I love creative, fun dates and with the economy as it is right now and with Valentine’s on a Sunday, there is no better time to get creative and have some fun at home. I would love to hear any ideas that you have used big or small for romantic gestures!

Show a Little Love: Valentine Gift Ideas

February 1, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 6 Comments

I like to give the hubs something that I made for Valentine’s Day. He always complains about how Valentine’s Day is so commercialized, so I like to give him something with a little more meaning along with his store bought gift. Here are a couple of ideas: last year I gave him a deck of cards with 52 Reasons Why I Love You. This year I am giving him this personalized Rubik’s cube, so hopefully he is not reading this! 🙂

This “52 Reasons Why I Love You” card deck gift was a big success last year! It was really fun to make, but took me a bit longer to make than I anticipated so leave yourself a good amount of time and get started early! Here are some examples of some of my reasons…

I wrapped it up in a festive bag with some crinkle paper and a ribbon. He LOVED it and asked if we could hang it somewhere for everyone to see. I saw the card deck idea here.

This year’s idea came from Love Actually. When I saw this Personalized Photo Rubik’s Cube I knew it would be perfect. Let’s face it, the hubs is a geek and loves a normal Rubik’s cube, so how could he not love one plastered with photos of us even more! I was ecstatic when I found a Rubik’s cube at the dollar store and snatched it up for this project.

I wanted to use really candid pics that showed personality. I put one of our engagement pics on the top and a pic from the sand on our Honeymoon in Puerto Rico on the bottom. Then I circled the cube with pics from our bridals (Thanksgiving Point), wedding day (Salt Lake LDS temple), and reception (The Lodge in Perry, UT).

I love how it turned out and hope he loves it too!

Chicken Noodle Jar Soup

January 26, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

I had a few requests for the recipe for the Chicken Noodle Jar Soup from yesterday’s get well care package post. Ask, and you shall receive. I think it is a nice gift idea for someone who is feeling a little under the weather.

Chicken Noodle Jar Soup

2 Tbs. Chicken Bouillon Granules
2 Tbs. Dried onion
2 tsps. Dried celery flaked
1 tsp. Black Pepper
4 Cups Egg noodles

Put all ingredients in a jar or bag and give with the following instructions.

Bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Add 1 can of chicken and contents of bag. Boil 12-15 minutes.

I got this recipe from my wonderful neighbor Marilyn who we lovingly refer to as our son’s ward Grandma. We love them and are so happy to have Marilyn in nursery with the little guy on Sunday now!!

Oh, and mom is doing a bit better. She was able to come to a family birthday dinner which was great! Thanks for your concern!

Show a Little Love: Get Well Soon Care Package

January 25, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 11 Comments

When I was in college my mom always brought me a Care Package for finals week. It was filled with snacks and things to relieve some of the crazy all night studying stress. I was so thankful to receive these packages and they really did help me know I was loved and thought about.

Well, recently my mom had a minor stroke. Luckily, she has next to none of the possibly terrible side effects, but is really tired and has been ordered to basically do nothing for a few weeks. This is hard enough for anyone, but my mom is a busy body and a clean freak too. Having a house in disarray would likely drive her completely batty.

I was not able to go up to visit right away because the stress of having crazy two year old son running around during her recovery was sure to send her straight back to the ER. So I had to wait until the weekend, but wanted to send my love right away. I knew a get well care package would be just the thing.

Here are the items and messages I came up with:

  • Corner book mark (idea from Little Birdie Secrets): Headache have you “cornered?” Slip this little marker on the corner of your page and she’ll hold your place for ya!
  • Chicken noodle jar soup (put in a bag instead for mailing): just had instructions
  • Lindor hazlenut candy bar: I know all this rest is driving you “nuts” but be good to yourself and you’ll feel better soon!
  • Cozy slipper socks: “Sock” it to this chilly weather! Slip these on and feel warm and cozy in no time.
  • Good & Plenty: Be “good” and get “plenty” of rest.
  • Card: Keep Going! You can “not” do it! (You know encouragement for those who are supposed to do nothing)

Mom and Dad both loved it! I don’t think that getting something fun in the mail thing ever wears off! My mom told me she LOVES the socks, so I just gave her another pair last night.
