How to Curl Hair Without Heat

Here’s a little tip I picked up from Deidra in the make up and hair tip class at the Breathing Space Retreat that has been a life changer, no heat curls. No really, this is one of my go to styles now. It’s super easy, takes next to no time and gives you natural, beachy looking curls with no curling or straightening iron needed. Seriously, these pics are from the very first time I tried it!!

All you need for no heat curls is an elastic headband and barely damp hair. This is important, if it is too wet, it will never dry. You basically just wrap all your hair around the headband wear it for a few hours until it dries and then pull out and smooth. Easy peasy! I don’t wash my hear everyday, so this lasts a few days for me with some touch ups. I actually like it better the second day when it has relaxed and is loose wavy curls.

Here’s a video tutorial with exactly how to do curl hair without heat. It’s much easier then trying to explain it in writing. It’s kinda long because it has the before and after how-to’s, but I’ll let you in on all the tricks on how to make it work. This tutorial was on my second try. It is truly that easy.

My stylist friend Jami tried wearing it overnight and said it was a mess in the morning. I think the no heat curl key is putting it in barely damp in the morning and taking it out a few hours later after lunchtime. Then, use your favorite products to tame the beast. Also, I have naturally wavy hair, so that may contribute to the working well for me, but Deidra who taught the class has stick straight and it works for her so I think it should be pretty universal.

I hope you try it! I have done it four or five times now which is saying something since the retreat was less than a month ago.

Polka Dot Fruit Stand

I love the fresh produce that comes with summer. We’re trying to eat healthier what better way to do it than having your fruit right on the counter to grab for snacks or even just remember what you have to work with. I have done a bowl in the past, but I wanted a fruit stand that could hold a lot and also add some color and personality to my kitchen.

I love how it turned out, but just in case it is not your style, I have five others for you to choose from! This idea was actually born from a late night snack run with my roommates during Breathing Space Blogger Retreat. We ran to the grocery store, saw these adorable polka dot dishes and thought it might be fun to make stands with them. I love how each bloggers personality shows through a little differently.

Supplies:

Dishes

Candlesticks

Spray Paint

E-6000

Spray paint your candlesticks using multiple light coats and letting it dry between coats. Glue it all together with E-6000 making sure everything is centered over each other. Let it dry.

As you can see I put the top candle stick upside down. It fit perfectly within the ridges of the bowl and then left more room on the small plate for fruit or goodies. I decided on a fruit stand because it’s not often that I need a whole display of goodies and it was way to cute to hide in a cupboard. I love how it adds a natural pop of color to my space.

It would also be super cute for chips or veggies and dip! Oooh, or crackers and an assortment of cheese cubes in the top!

Tie Dye Accessories

Tie Dye brings back lots of memories like demolition derbies, girls camp, and my brother in-law when we first met him. I was excited when I was asked to try out Tulip Tie Dye not only because we had a past, but because I like a challenge and wanted to see what I could create using tie dye besides the traditional t-shirt. Ok, so I did start with an old stained t-shirt, but I came up with these coordinating Mom and tot tie dye accessories.

I had no idea why in the world I was making matching accessories. I have no daughter nor do any of my little nieces really wear cutesy headbands. Later, I found out an adorable family whom I adore was going through a big trial and could use a little sunshine in their life. Things happen for a reason I believe.

Ready for a little how to?

SUPPLIES:

Tulip Tie Dye Kit Including:
-Tie Dye
-Squirt bottles
-Gloves
-Surface cover

Pre-washed white t-shirt (mine was 95% cotton, 5% spandex so it was nice and smooth with a bit of elasticity and also does not roll as much when stretched)

Fabric scissors
Big wood beads
Gray spray paint
Needle
Thread
Felt
Hot Glue Gun

DIRECTIONS:

1. Lay out your surface cover and pre-washed shirt. Wearing your gloves mix up yellow and black dye. I did a black ombre shirt before this, so you can either use the dye for something else until you have about 1/4 of the black left and then fill the bottle with water to dilute to gray or just use less dye powder and more water to begin.

2. Use the squirt bottle to dye the top of the shirt with the gray using a sweeping side to side motion until covered completely to about 4 inches down. Then dye with yellow using the sweeping motion, but leave about 1.5 inches between stripes. Do not oversoak with yellow. You want the back to remain mostly white. Let dry for at least 6 hours. I let mine dry completely.

3. While the shirt is drying, spray paint your beads gray letting them dry between coats. I used 3 thin coats.

4. Launder separately in the hottest water safe for your fabric using the large load setting with a little bit of laundry soap. Dry separately in the dryer.

I actually loved how it looked as a shirt and was tempted to stop here…

but there was a small stain on the back of my shirt on the white part, so I grabbed the scissors and continued on my way.

5. Cut 1/2 inch strips from the back of the shirt on a diagonal so they are as long as possible. This will give the strips yellow ends.

6. Make a small slit in the end of each strip and thread them through each other so they are attached.

7. Tie a knot where you attached the two strands for extra security and to start your necklace. Work out from that center knot. Twist up the end of the strip so it looks like the top of a pointy ice cream cone. Slide the point through the beads one by one. You can make the hole in the bead a bit larger by placing the tip of some ordinary scissors in and twisting around if needed. Tie a knot on either side of each bead so they stay in place. Leave about a 2 inch space for the flower with five beads on one side and one bead on the other.

8. For the flower, cut 6 circles about 2 inches in diameter from the yellow striped part of the shirt.

9. Fold the circles in half and then in half again to get a pie shape. Attach them by poking the needle through the point of each pie. Rotate and fluff the “petals” as needed to get a nice full shape.

10. Hot glue the flower in place and then secure a circle of felt to the back of the flower for additional security and finished look.

11. Tie the necklace around your neck to the desired length using a bow. The ends of the strips will still have a bit of a twist from threading them through the beads.

Have you ever seen tie dye look so cute?

Just wait until you see the tot side of the coordinates!

1. Cut a 2 inch strip of the yellow stripes. Pull the ends tight so it rolls in a bit. Attach the ends with hot glue. Cute another strip about 1″x 2″ Roll in the edges and hot glue over the seam to keep it soft for the little one.

2. For the flowers, cut a 3 inch square in the yellow stripes and a 3 1/2 inch square from the white. Cut out a wiggly shape like an amoeba. It does not have to be perfect. Now place a dob of hot glue in the center and squish to give the flower ripply volume.

3. For one center, take a strip of gray and make a rosette. For the other, take a strip and tie knots all along it. Then, wrap it round itself in a spiral twisting as needed to make it fit right. Hot glue them to the center of the flowers.

4. Hot glue the flowers to the headband.

Ug, I love it so much! It is just dying to be donned on a sweet little soul! I am excited to try some more techniques!

Puppet Playhouse & Craft It! Kit {GIVEAWAY}

I am so excited to share what we have in store today! It’s one of those projects that makes my heart smile when I think about it. My kiddos and I created a puppet playhouse along with some animal puppets to go along. With spring break and summer on it’s way it is a super fun way to bust the “I’m Bored” streak!

I was excited when Elmer’s contacted me about their Craft it! Community! Craft it! is a place for creative gals to share their creations and project ideas, gain inspiration and seek crafting advice. I love having a place to visit filled with people who “get it.” You know, people who don’t think it’s weird that you keep 10 different types of adhesive on hand at all times and may even have an entire drawer dedicated to them.

We got a box in the mail and it was like Christmas! So many fun X-acto and Elmer’s things to create with!! We decided to make a puppet playhouse and various puppets so we would have a project for mommy’s strong opinion, but also some pieces the kids could do to their specifications. The kids had a blast putting together the puppets and putting on little shows.

Puppet Supplies:

Scrap Paper & Cardstock

Popsicle sticks

Googly Eyes

Scissors

X-acto Corner Punch

Elmer’s Permanent Dot Runner

Elmer’s Foam Adhesive Roll (for pig nose)

Painter’s Marker in White (for tiger fur)

For the puppets I cut out simple shapes for the bodies and heads (since my little one is still learning the ins and outs of scissors) and let him glue them all together with the dot runner. Many of the heads were just squares that I rounded with the corner punch. So easy!! You can see the basic shapes we used in the pictures below.

The puppets turned out so sweet and with so much more personality than if I would have done them on my own. I did the fringe for the mane after we glued it with the little precision tip scissors. This little lion just oozes cute factor!

My son insisted that I needed a Miss Piggy complete with blonde hair. We used the a piece of the foam adhesive roll to make the snout 3-D.

I didn’t even realize when I was cutting this snake out that I was giving him a frown. My little guy was nice enough to point out that he was sad because he had lost his mother and that Miss Piggy would adopt him.

I love how Mr. Octopus looks like he’s taking a step. My little guy also pointed out that the polka dots were suction cups. So creative these little ones!

We added some whiskers and fur on the tiger with the white Painter’s marker. It was surprisingly easy to use except for the slight mishap on the tail getting the paint flowing in the beginning.

By now my kiddos were ready for a break so off to naps they went and I decided to tackle the X-acto knife work and puppet playhouse without the little hands.

Puppet Playhouse Supplies:

2 Elmer’s Bifold Foam

X-acto Self-Healing Mat

X-acto Metal Ruler

Packing tape

X-acto Knife

Scissors

3 12×12 Polka Dot Paper

Red Cardstock

Yellow Cardstock

Elmer’s Permanant Dot Runner

Elmer’s Quick Dry Glue Pen

Glitter Foam Adhesive Stars

1. Open the two bi-fold foam boards and lay flat with the short ends together. Tape the two boards together with packing tape. Lay the center of the board on the self-healing mat and using the ruler and X-acto knife cut out a 6 inch by 12 inch rectangle about 1.5 inches from the top of the board.

2. Using the permanant dot runner around the edges, adhere your polka dot paper over the entire front of the board. I cut slits in the paper where the board folds so it could still fold flat when not in use.

3.Cut a bunch of little rectangles (about 1″ x 2″) out of yellow cardstock. Round the bottom edges with the corner punch. Glue the rectangles on the bottom of the “stage” by doing a line with the glue runner on the bottom edge of the stage on both sides and about and inch down from the bottom on the front. Also do a thin line of the Elmer’s quick dry pen where the foam is rough from the X-acto knife. Fold the rectangles over the edge of the stage one by one.

4. Cut 4 curtain shapes from the red, two slightly larger than the other and layer them to look like curtains. Cut a little piece of yellow cardstock to look like a curtain tie back. Glue them on with the permanent dot runner.
