Summer Reading Made Fun!

July 18, 2013 By Michelle Barneck Leave a Comment

I received product for review, but all opinions are very much my own.

Summer is a time for fun, swimming, popsicles, and play, but for some of us it is also a time we worry about the hard work during the school year slipping away. It’s so nice to have the kids have time from free play and using their imagination. What if it could be so easy to also keep up their reading skills and maybe even improve them over the summer?!

Sounds like work right? Flashcards and phonics and reading aloud. While those things are fabulous and of course recommended as well, I have found the easy way out. It is on the computer which my son loves and all I have to do is log him in and he does his daily practice. It is short so he doesn’t get whiny about how it takes forever and they actually say not to help your child. The program works best if they do it on their own. Glory day! I love helping them to feel independent and to learn on their own.
So you probably want to know what it is huh? It’s called Reading Kingdom and it’s been great!

Reading Kingdom

First thing, it has your child take a little quiz to see what level they are on and what areas they need extra help with. I love that it personalized the program based on each child.

Not only has it kept my little guy sounding things out and improving his sight reading and letter recognition, but it has helped him learn where the letters are on the keyboard which in this day and age is basically an essential life skill.

For instance, in this activity he was to find the one that could make the word girls and type the letters to complete the word. (To give you a frame of reference on level, he is going in to kindergarten.)

After each session it gives them a reward in their passport. It also keeps track of their progress in each area and how far they are in each level on an easy to read dashboard so you can keep tabs on how they are doing.

I love that it is super easy, he loves that it is like another computer game. Really it has been a win, win.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Making Gift Giving a Snap! #ZiftList

June 26, 2013 By Michelle Barneck Leave a Comment

I am one of those people who shops directly from people’s wish lists and registries. It’s kind of a given for me, if they are going to go to the trouble to say exactly what they like why would I not use it? That’s why I was excited when I found this new site called Ziftit.

Ziftit was designed to make the shopping process enjoyable and easy while eliminating the guesswork out of gift giving. You can search trending gifts or add a Ziftit button to your navigation bar so you can add items from other websites to your Zift list! Now that’s speaking my language. Members can share their Zift (Gift) List of desired items with their loved ones through Facebook, Twitter, and email. For example, here is a list I created around the time of my birthday.

Have you ever been the purchaser of a group gift, never saw the cash from the rest of the group and don’t want to harass them about it so you just eat it? We’ve all been there. Ziftit makes it possible for multiple people to go in on a gift by adding funds to that gift! No more scrambling or passing cash around.

I also love the event feature! You can create invite friends and attach a Ziftlist directly to the event. Imagine the possibilities for baby/bridal showers! I created an event for my husband’s birthday coming up this week.

Oh, how I love having options. Check it out for yourself.

Are you a wish list/registry gifter?

Shabby Apple Giveaway

May 16, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 121 Comments

I got a fun little surprise in the mail just in time for Mother’s Day. Shabby Apple (I am an affiliate) sent me their At First Sight dress. It was so fun to have something nice and new to wear to church for Mother’s Day. The hubs was kind enough to do a mini photo shoot beforehand. This was the first shot he got!
I adore the rich color of the dress and the length is perfect. I love the look of the wrap dress with the ruffles and bow. It is dressed up and girly without being stuffy. My only complaint is the liner near the neck tends to unfold and peak out. Nothing that can’t be easily fixed with an iron, clothing tape or simple stitching.
There are so many dresses over at Shabby Apple that I just love!
GondolaThis lighthearted polka-dot dress has all the spunk of a joyride in an old-school red convertible. Featuring an ivory ground energized by scads of bold teal polka dots, this dress may tempt you to throw on a headscarf, shades, and driving gloves for a cruise downtown. Fully- lined. Machine-wash cold, delicate cycle.Scalloped tiers of openwork lace in a soft seafood hue descend from a dainty grosgrain ribbon that defines the waist of the Alice dress. The charming shape--cap sleeves and a high boat neck, nipped at the waist and full through the skirt--lets the color do all the talking (or is that your next door neighbor wishing out loud that she knew your style secrets?). Dress it up with dainty kitten heels or bold tights for a perfectly eye-popping look.
Does your closet need a new addition?
Shabby Apple is giving away a $75 gift card!

Goodbye Death Trap, Hello Beauty {A Ceiling Fan Story}

April 11, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

This post is sponsored by Overstock.com who provided the ceiling fan for review. The thoughts and near death experiences are all my own. 😉
It started out with what I thought was upgrading my “quite the sight” 1980’s ceiling fan and turned out to be saving ourselves from an untimely death. We traded in our non-classy brassy for a sleek little espresso number only to find the old ceiling fan was held on by one measly screw directly above my side of the bed. I was one moderate earthquake away from a news headline, “Local Blogger Impaled by Ceiling Fan.”
Granted it was not the poor fan’s fault. I blame the careless previous owners/builders who thought it too much work to make sure both anchor screws actually connected with something remotely solid. Maybe they were looking for a quick way out while still collecting life insurance? See the suspect fan below.
The difference is grand. Thank heavens for the hubs who climbed up in the attic to install an extra board to anchor the fan safely. I guess he wants to keep me around. I smile every morning when I see our new fan and know I will live to see another day. It is my daily dose of espresso. (hardy har)
Wanna know what else is super cool about our new fan? The other side of the blades is a lighter shade of brown so if I decide to change my color scheme or espresso rolls out with the trendwinds I can just flip them over and give the fan a mini face lift.

I love the color, I love the quality and I love that I ordered it from the comfort of my own home without paying an arm and a leg. We love having four lights so it’s nice and bright when we need it. It is a total lifesaver during these spring months when it gets warm, but you don’t want to turn on the A/C just yet because it might be 70 one day and snow the next.

I knew Overstock had great deals on bedding, rugs, and clothing, but I was surprised to find such a great ceiling fan selection. You can order my ceiling fan here or see their collection of ceiling fans to choose a style all your own.

Do you have a light fixture you are dying to upgrade?
Do you have any funny discoveries while doing home improvements?
