Goodbye Death Trap, Hello Beauty {A Ceiling Fan Story}

April 11, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

This post is sponsored by Overstock.com who provided the ceiling fan for review. The thoughts and near death experiences are all my own. 😉
It started out with what I thought was upgrading my “quite the sight” 1980’s ceiling fan and turned out to be saving ourselves from an untimely death. We traded in our non-classy brassy for a sleek little espresso number only to find the old ceiling fan was held on by one measly screw directly above my side of the bed. I was one moderate earthquake away from a news headline, “Local Blogger Impaled by Ceiling Fan.”
Granted it was not the poor fan’s fault. I blame the careless previous owners/builders who thought it too much work to make sure both anchor screws actually connected with something remotely solid. Maybe they were looking for a quick way out while still collecting life insurance? See the suspect fan below.
The difference is grand. Thank heavens for the hubs who climbed up in the attic to install an extra board to anchor the fan safely. I guess he wants to keep me around. I smile every morning when I see our new fan and know I will live to see another day. It is my daily dose of espresso. (hardy har)
Wanna know what else is super cool about our new fan? The other side of the blades is a lighter shade of brown so if I decide to change my color scheme or espresso rolls out with the trendwinds I can just flip them over and give the fan a mini face lift.

I love the color, I love the quality and I love that I ordered it from the comfort of my own home without paying an arm and a leg. We love having four lights so it’s nice and bright when we need it. It is a total lifesaver during these spring months when it gets warm, but you don’t want to turn on the A/C just yet because it might be 70 one day and snow the next.

I knew Overstock had great deals on bedding, rugs, and clothing, but I was surprised to find such a great ceiling fan selection. You can order my ceiling fan here or see their collection of ceiling fans to choose a style all your own.

    Beautiful! It’s funny how such a small change can make a big difference. I am in love with that room – I’ll need to keep this in mind when I redecorate our master bedroom (which is hopefully soon….)

    Not a personal story, but a friends story. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind me sharing it. One morning she was awaked by a loud noise and when she opened her eyes she saw her ceiling fan hanging from a cord and spinning out of control around her bedroom. She screamed for help but no one was home so she had to walk as close to the walls as she could to get to the switch to turn it off. Scary story, but funny too. Glad she was alright and you got yours fixed. It looks amazing, and I LOVE your bed.

    The new fan looks great! Our fans also have reversible blades, such a good idea!

    We changed our dining room into a living room so I need to switch out that lighting fixture but I can’t decide what I want in there!

    This isn’t a story of potential hazard, but a funny home improvement story all the same. We own a home built in 1960 – and for some reason, back then, it wasn’t cool to install light fixtures on your ceiling. After a year and a half of only having one lamp for light, we finally decided to install a couple of ceiling fans {our house also faces West, with a window almost the size of the living room wall, which makes the living room a mini oven in the summer time}. My hubby and BIL got to work while I went to do some Christmas shopping. Five hours later, they still weren’t done. I found more to do. Several hours later, they still weren’t done. It took a week before my living room was back together.
    First story:
    When my hubby went into the attic and started cutting a hole for the fan box, he thought it was really hard to do. He figured he must’ve been kinda wimpy so tried harder. My BIL finally called up asking what was taking so long. After awhile, they finally figured out that not only was he trying to hand saw through two layers of thick plaster and wood but also a wire mesh that was ruining the saw.
    Story two:
    While trying to feed the wire for the light switch from the box to the switch, they couldn’t find the wire. It didn’t make sense. The other wire was there but for some reason, their wire kept getting stuck on something they couldn’t find. They cut the light switch hole a little bigger; still couldn’t find it. A little bigger still; no luck. Finally, after cutting a hole four inches wide by about 20 inches long, they found the wire. It was just curving inward a little and not going down the narrow space between the boards.

    And those are just a couple of stories we’ve had from trying to fix stuff up with this house! Yay for crazy surprises when doing home improvement projects!
