1 Hour Kitchen Sink Makeover

September 23, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

This post is sponsored by Delta via Glam Media.

You know that saying, “everything, but the kitchen sink” well I’m changing that to everything about the kitchen sink. You spend so much time prepping, washing, and filling using it, so why now take a few minutes to make it the sink area you really want? In just over an hour, we transformed our Kitchen sink area into a utility mecca and I could not be more pleased with the changes!
Ok, so the before and after in the photo is kind of like one of those “spot the differences” games, but the difference in real life rock my socks so I made this little video so I could “show and tell” my makeover and you could see all my favorite changes in detail.

If you’re not much of a video person, here’s what we did…

  • Upgraded to Delta Touch2O Cassidy Faucet –
    • Turns on and off with a touch anywhere on it, even with your arm,  giving cross contamination a run for its money.
    • Reaches further out in the sink so my 5 year old no longer needs a stool to wash his hands!!
    • Pull the nozzle out to rinse the sink or fill a pot on the counter and it has a magnet feature to help it stay put when attached. Our old nozzle would start to slip down, so we can appreciate this.
    • High quality finish. The finish on our old faucet began to peel, not cool.
    • I had my plumber friend install it as it is a bit more complicated than your standard faucet, but like it says in the title, it took only about an hour.
    • Powered by batteries which I thought was odd at first, but quickly realized was nice when we had the power off to install the outlets. I want water when the power is out, don’t you? 🙂
  • Replaced sink caddy – the old one was grody mcgrodes. It is the perfect holder for the veggie brush and sponge so they drain in to the sink, not on the counter.
  • Added Utility Drain Guard (visible in video) – keeps silverware and small items from falling in to the garbage disposal. Also has a silicone scraper on the end to help clean pans.
  • Added soap and scrubby tray – gives things a home. Covered the soap dispensers with shelf paper to give them a uniform look in a fun pattern.
  • Changed outlet covers and light switch – Almond to white is always a nice clean update.
Overall, I could not be happier with the update and the fact that it was so fast makes it that much better! And just for fun, you have got to check out this Delta Touch2O video, it’s one of the best ads I’ve seen.

Storage Room Organization in One Day

September 19, 2013 By Michelle Barneck Leave a Comment

The other day I heard a crash and went downstairs to see that  shelf in my storage room had crashed to the floor and there was a sea of food storage covering the floor. It was a disaster and it was finally time to give my neglected storage room a little attention. I had probably, ok, surely been stacking the shelves with way too much and it was time for action. A trip to the hardware store and $117 later we were ready to install eight additional shelves that were much stronger than the originals.

Overall it was fairly simple. 1. Clear everything out. 2. Add additional brackets for strength and more shelves closer together. 3. Cover the mismatched wood of the shelves with shelf paper. 4. Move everything back in with a purpose in mind.

We added two shelves on the left in the entryway, two more running the length of the wall, and a set of four to hold our five gallon water jugs. Our shelves use brackets, so we added an extra bracket holder to each set for strength, along with making the shelves a lot closer together so they would not be so loaded down.

Tips for organizing your storage or pantry:

  • Use the vertical space. Adding shelving to a small space can made it hold twice as much.
  • Buy clear $1 plastic containers to house smaller packages of things like pasta and make them easy to stack.
  • Organize so it is like shopping. It’s kind of fun to have everything lined up like a grocery store.
  • Organize everything by date with the oldest in front so you never have to question which to use and things are less likely to expire.
  •  Put the things you use most often down low so you can send the kids to grab items.
  • Cover shelves with shelf paper to add personality and cover mismatched or stained shelves.
  • If you have buckets for Flour, Sugar, Rice, etc. Get the easy access spin off lids! They save you time and frustration. I got mine at Macey’s grocery store.
  • Can rollers are fabulous to use vertical space but still have easy access to cans. Plus they rotate your store for you!
  • Keep #10 can in their original boxes and label with what is in them and expiration dates. This keeps them easy to move, but you don’t have to search wondering what is where.
  • Keep 72 hour kits easy to grab in an emergency.

This organizing makeover gave us access to twice as much space! I was able to move things in that were stacked ominously in the corner of the playroom. Our 72 hour kits and emergency supplies were in a huge tote on the bottom of that stack. Not great for access. They are now in backpacks in the entry of the storage room, easy to grab and go if needed.

What are your favorite storage/organizing tips? How do you make the best use of your space?

Friendly Ghost Pencil Toppers

September 17, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Happy Halloween folks! I’m Kelly from Smart School House sharing a fun Halloween craft with you today! Ok, well, maybe it isn’t technically Halloween yet, but you know it will be here in the blink of an eye (or a googly eye in this case!). Do you have kiddos in your life that enjoy arts and crafts? Then this one is for you!
Ghost Pencil Toppers
As a teacher, I love anything to do with pencils and crayons (as you can see in THIS fun post). I think these friendly ghost pencil toppers would be fun to make in the classroom OR at home, no? To get started, you only need some very, very basic (and cheap) materials:

  • pencils
  • white craft foam
  • googly eyes glue
  • polka dot ribbon (optional)

I drew a ghost free hand, but this can be done with a stencil if you have one on hand. Each pencil topper has TWO foam ghosts, so cut out as many as you will need depending on how many pencil toppers you want to make. Psssst: here’s a tip, if you’re working with kids, make extra! There are bound top be craft mishaps, and that is all part of the learning process:)

Once you have cut out your ghosts, connect them together using glue. I used hot glue because it is quick! But again, if you’re working with kids, plain white glue will also work. Of course, it takes longer for white glue to dry. Only put a little glue around the top and sides of the ghost though! I like to say, “Dot, dot, not a lot!” when I’m working with kids. Simply show them to make small dots of white glue along the outer edges so that the pencil can be pushed inside.

There you have it Halloween lovers! A cute and kid-friendly craft to celebrate the fun! It is always such a pleasure being here. I’d love for you to stop by my blog, Smart School House, and see the other festive crafts (and sweets) that I have up my sleeve these days!

Thanks Kelly! I am dying over the googly eyes with the eyelashes! So fun!

Mom of Boys: Comic Relief for Moms of the Male Variety {take 2}

September 15, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

I started writing down things I hear myself or my boys say that I never would have thought I would hear because, well, they make me laugh. I hope you like them too cause Mom of Boys is now a series on the 3rd Sunday of each month. If you missed our first Mom of Boys post be sure to go back!
Let’s explain how this will work and who things were said by…

A = my skinny, karate obsessed 5 1/2 year old
L = my spunky, snack loving 2 1/2 year old
J = my geeky chic husband
Nothing or M = me aka mom of boys

This is in no way meant to be a parenting lesson. Just a little peek into our crazy and at times comical lives.

Mom of boys…things you never thought you’d hear in your home, then you birthed a boy.

  1. Where is your Pull-up?
  2. A: I’m juggling my head.
  3. Why are you eating a screwdriver?
  4. Did you just eat something off your foot?
  5. I don’t want to wear your corn as a shoe.
  6. Just eat it. No one wants to eat it once it’s been in your armpit.
  7. J: Are you bare butt naked, where’s your pull-up? L: It’s right here. J: No it’s not, that your wienie.
  8. We don’t hit the deck.
  9. You can’t put your finger in the pencil sharpener. That’s not what they mean by pointer.
  10. Quit biting cables please!
  11. A: So your mom laid you? J: No, chickens lay eggs, people birth. A: No people lay babies out of their tummies.
  12. A: Daddy, I have a new rule. No more unzipping mommy’s pants. (zipper on the side leg pocket of my shorts that all my boys think is funny to unzip)
  13. A: Dad, do you like the vibrating that’s on you? (Xbox controller he put on his lap)
I am also happy to include my favorites from the comments on last month’s Mom of Boys post:
  1. R boy handing J boy soap to use in the shower: do you want to use dads soap or kid soap? Do you want to smell like a man (dads) or like a watermelon? – Camille
  2. While running a bath for my two year old son last week he walked in with a banana in his hand. I told him a banana didn’t need a bath and to please bring it back to the kitchen. Off he went, only to return a minute later with an onion. Again I asked him to put the onion back in the kitchen. He left and once more I turned my attention to preparing his bath when suddenly there was a splash beside me. I looked over to see a sweet potato in the tub among the bubbles.”C! No vegetables in the tub!” – Tawnya
  3. Of course, I have enough to write a novel, but my all time favorite is “No, you cannot put your own p3nis in your mouth”. Really? Why in the world would that cross your mind???!!!! – Jennifer LHave your kids made you laugh lately? What comical things have you said or overheard your kids say? Share in the comments and we will choose our favorites to share in our Mom of Boys post on October 20th!
