DIY Under $5 Features

December 10, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

Today’s features are a fantastic round up of holiday goodness! I am so happy it is December! There is something about the lights and music and season that just makes everything happier! Did you know that when people were asked what one of their least favorite things about the holidays was they said, “having to be nice.” Ha! Hilarious, but I’ll take it. Go ahead and be forcefully nice to me. 😉
So here are some of my favorites. Tis the season to be jolly.
Snowball Votives from Just Another Hang Up
There are no words for how much I love these and they are sooo easy!
DIY Advent from Creative Chaos
Beautiful and made from things she could find in Namiba! Creativity at its finest!
Advent Calendar from Southern Lovely
Love that apple green! This would look lovely next to my sweater stockings!
Holiday Card Holder from Sugar Bee Crafts
Did you notice a trend in those last few? I have a slight obsession with clothespins right now.
This next one is a great gift idea! It would be fun to put the ribbon marking the nativity story in the bible! A great way to dress up the affordable paperback scriptures to make them look nice. My little guy might be getting some of these boyified of course.
Personalized Scripture Covers from G-rated
Last but certainly not least, the highest clicked post:
Bathroom Cleaning Tips from Joyful Homemaking
I mean who doesn’t want to speed up that job?!

DIY Under $5: Make Stockings

December 7, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

Last year, right before Christmas I realized that with the birth of our second son in November we were short one stocking. That of course wouldn’t do, so I decided to make stockings. I always loved the look of cable knit stockings so I decided to make stockings out of old sweaters. Lucky for me it is most delightfully simple.

(hard to get a great picture of the texture at 8 pm)

I purchased sweaters at the thrift store, but you could use some you own if you like the colors.
  1. Turn the sweater inside out and use the finished bottom of the sweater as the top opening of your stocking.
  2. Trace the shape of an old stocking on to the sweater with a sharpie.
  3. Cut out the shape and sew the edges together with a sewing machine.
This is one of the few sewing projects I have done completely on my own. Trust me it is so easy to make stockings!

Now let’s see what you’ve been up to!

I enjoy so much your $5 projects that I decided to add an addition link section for anything under $15! That’s right. It will open up a place to show additional projects that can’t be purchased with an Abe Lincoln, but are still totally affordable! I can’t wait to see more from you!

Please remember:

  • Only link to your own projects that cost you $5 or less (price does not have to include items you had on hand) or $15 or less in the 2nd section.
  • You can link past projects that fit the dollar limit, but please only link each project one time to one DIY Under $5 party. Do not link the same project week after week.
  • No linking giveaways or items for sale
  • Please link back so others can join the party and so you have the opportunity to be featured on Saturday!

DIY Under $5

Let’s start off the party with a fun little something to show someone you care. I call it “You Light Up My Life.” Leave a string of paper lights on their door with a note of love, appreciation or encouragement written on each light.
Now let’s see what you’ve been up to!
