DIY Under $5: Making Fabric Flowers

March 23, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 8 Comments

I wanted a little something to spruce up my wardrobe, but did not want to dent my pocket book. I pulled out my fabric stash and got to work. I made a few little fabric flowers (you have seen them EVERYWHERE), but made them so I can interchange them and wear them a whole bunch of ways depending on my mood and outfit.

How to make Fabric Flowers

Supplies:

  • Scrap Fabric
  • Buttons
  • Hot Glue

Cost: FREE!!

Everything I used for making these fabric flowers was stashed in a drawer or on a shelf.

1. Cut out four fabric flowers. (I liked the back of this material better. It looked aged and had a burlap/canvas feel.)

2. Fold each flower in half and then in half again.

3. Glue all four folded flowers to a circle of felt or cardstock. Add a button to the middle.

4. Glue an additional piece of cloth over the one the petals are glued to. I only glued two edges so I could slide it on a headband or clip and interchange the flowers.

I also made another type of fabric flower by cutting out circles instead of flowers and using the same folding technique. I did two layers of circle petals making he second layer a bit smaller.

Wear them any way you like from head to toe!

In your hair…

On a cardi or necklace…

or bracelet…

{The grey knit bracelet is actually the top of a sock from my cute bean bags from worn out socks project. Shhh. Don’t tell. Does this make me a certified hoarder? I knew I could use it for something someday.}

or on your shoes!

OK, so now it’s time to link up!!

Please remember:

Feature Friday-Blog Swap with Scraps N’ Strings

Scraps N' Strings

Hello to A Little Tipsy readers! This is Ruth and Sammy from Scraps N’ Strings and we are so excited to be doing our blog swap with Michelle! We figure we had better introduce ourselves a bit before we start.

I’m Ruth and I am a stay at home mommy of 2 (3 and 1) and a part-time photographer, you can see my work here. I enjoy making “stuff” and taking pictures of them! I especially love to sew and like to break out the Modge Podge. I love anything that is quick and simple! After I got married, I started crafting with my sister-in-law Sammy as a way to make our homes cute without spending a lot of money.

My name is Sammy and I have 2 darling little boys, 2 1/2 and 1 year. I’m a stay at home mom and I like to spend my zero amount of free time trying to be crafty and beautifying my home. One of the first things my husband said to me when we bought our home was, “You want to put crafts up, don’t you?” So that’s what I’ve done. And now we’ve decided to share some of our ideas with you! We’ve got a little bit of everything on our blog, from baby and home tutorials to recipes!

Michelle wanted us to answer a few questions to help all of you get to know us better! So here we go- oh this is Sammy by the way 😀

What is your favorite crafting tool or secret weapon? I would have to say that my new favorite tool that I have is the buttonhole foot on my sewing machine. I have just recently started using it and I love it! I think that my family is sick of me showing them all of the awesome buttonholes that I’ve made. They apparently aren’t so easily impressed. 🙂

What is your favorite thing about back to school? My current favorite thing about back to school is that I’m not going back to school… hehe. But I don’t look forward to my kiddos getting to that age, I’m kind-of attached to them at the moment.

What is your favorite thing for breakfast? My favorite breakfast is peanut butter toast on the 9-grain bread from bountiful baskets and a banana. It definitely helps to get me up and going in the morning.

Here are some of the fun crafts that we have had on our blog lately…

Our Pretty in Pink Flower

Our Pretty Petal Skirt

Our Sweet Vintage Bunting

Our Tag-Along Lion Named Phil

And our Crate Planter

We hope that you will come and stop by Scraps N’ Strings and maybe find a little inspiration for yourselves while you’re there! Thanks for having us over Michelle!!

Nail Polish Glazed Washers

July 28, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 14 Comments

This is a nail polish glazed washer tutorial that I did for Ucreate a few weeks ago, so here is a recap if you missed it.

Nail Polish Washer Accessories

I love the glazed and stamped washers and decided to put a fun new twist on the washer. I “glazed” them using nail polish.

Supplies needed:

  • Washers
  • Nail Polish (color and clear)
  • Nails
  • Cereal Box
  • Accessory supplies: key ring, necklace, charms, clasps

(all the accessory supplies I used were 50% off at Hobby Lobby and cost $2 or less)

1. Poke the a few nails in the cereal box to hold up each washer so the paint can drip if needed.
2. Paint a light coat in the back of the washer so it will be the same color if it flips when you are wearing your necklace/bracelet.
3. Paint the edges of the washer.

4. For the top, really glop it on. There are four different techniques I used.

A. Paint small circles (I did about 10) to get a spirally effect.
B. Drag your brush from the inside to the outside all the way around to make it look like the iris of an eye. Next time I would do this in blue or green. 🙂

C. Stipple with your brush to get a hammered type look.
D. Drag your brush in circles around the whole washer.

5. Let dry until hardened. Add a clear coat to protect and add shine.

Ta da!

Now embellish however you like.

Add a clasp and a charm for a fun key chain.

Play with chains (mine was a 60 in. that I wrapped), clasps, and charms for a super versatile necklace. Click any of the images to see them up close.

Or rock it as a bracelet.

The possibilities are truly endless!

Feature Friday-Blog Swap with Ucreate

June 25, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

I am so excited to be featured by Kari over on Ucreate today!! I was so lucky to spend some time with her at CBC and was thrilled when she asked me to be a guest on Ucreate. Be sure to run over and see the tutorial I did just for her. It involves washers, nail polish and lots of accessorizing…

Now on to the fun stuff. I asked Kari to answer some questions so we could all get to know her a little better.

U Create

What is your favorite crafting tool or secret weapon?

  • This depends on what type of craft I’m working on. Right now I would definitely say my new Silhouette machine! I’m having so much fun with it and will be showing my readers some really cool things to do with it soon!
If you were a candy bar what would you be?
  • Hands down Snickers…best candy bar on the planet! Just had one.

http://donstuff.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/snickers-bar.jpg

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it be?

  • I like stylish clothes, but I am so into comfort! I would pick my favorite jeans, a cool graphic tee, and flip flops for sure!! (At CBC, she had on a super cute Ucreate owl t-shirt she made!)
What is one of your favorite summer activities to do with your kids?

  • It’s hard to chose one, but I would have to say picnics at the park. We bring frisbees, balls, etc…feed the ducks…and eat a picnic lunch on a blanket.

Thanks to Kari for a fun Feature Friday!!
