Young Women Activity

September 13, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 17 Comments

Recently, we decided that we wanted our Young Women Activities to have more spiritual themes. This does not mean that they have to be boring. Our latest Young Women Activity was about missionaries and missionary work and turned out really fun.

We started out with a Missionary relay race.

1. Open envelope and see where you are called. Dress in Sister missionary attire (I had cardigans and skirts with elastic waists so it would be fast and easy to put on).

2. Go to world map, find your mission and place sticky note arrow that was in mission call envelope.

3. Go to the MTC (Missionary Training Center) and complete two tasks.

{A} Use the scriptures to find the reference for a group of scriptures. I used D&C 4:1-7 (Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men…). I told them to try using key words from the scriptures and looking them up in the topical guide. I had an advisor waiting for them to give the correct reference.

{B} Memorize and repeat three different sentences in Spanish. (Our mission calls were to Spain and Venezuela)

  • Will you read the Book of Mormon?
  • I have a testimony of our Savior.
  • Where is the bathroom?

Another adviser (We love you and will miss you Amanda!) was waiting for them to tell them all three correctly.

4. Last they had to make a paper airplane and throw it on to a big X on the floor to fly to and arrive at their mission destination. This took quite a few tries!

After the relay, I shared how my Bishop in college said that if we pray for a missionary experience we would get one. I told them how I prayed and the experience I had. Then I challenged each of them to pray for a missionary experience and promised them that they could have one. Personal Progress Good Works Experience #7 goes perfectly with this.

I brought this little handout with an activity list and a treat for a couple of the girls to take to an inactive girl in our ward.

To close our Young Women activity, we brought paper and stickers for the girls to write letters to the missionaries from our ward (we have four, two in the states and two in the MTC still so postage was easy). Then, I brought them home and have been mailing one to each missionary every couple of days so the they would get letters for a week. The girls are excited to see if they write back.

This turned out to be a really fun Young Women activity with some great gospel exposure. Now I just need to figure something out for our Temple grounds walk activity this week!

What a cool activity! I work with high-school students and I love how you had them throw paper airplanes to arrive at their destination. SO COOL!

Did the yw do the relay race in groups or as pairs or by themselves? Did they all start at the same time, because it seems like they would be going through all together and some stations would get backed up?

    Jennifer,
We did it with our Beehives, so they just split up in two groups that started at the same time and raced. We had two of each station so it worked out perfectly.

That you so much! We are doing this activity tonight. I’m so excited.

I did want to let you know that the Spanish on your, “Will you read the Book of Mormon” is incorrect.
It should say: Leerá el Libro de Mormon? (instead of Leeres.)
    No Biggie though.

Thanks again or such a fun, creative idea.

This is such a great idea. I know you mentioned that you just did it with your beehives in 2 groups. Do you think I would be able to do it with more youth than that? Any ideas as to how I could get it to work with more?

You could totally do it with more. Just do it in the gym and break them up in to more groups.

I have finally found you!! What I mean is I am part of the young woman presidency in my ward. I have been looking for some help! We have a very small active young woman and a lot of inactive ones. So for my activity night which is this coming Wednesday! I had planned on having the girl’s make a fun cute gift and or activity to take to the inactive. Doing a little the young women’s. Inviting them to church or even just an activity. I am hoping you can help me with some ideas. Thank you for always sharing your gifts and talents to everyone
