Make a Memory {Movie Night with Personalized Concession Boxes}

July 4, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

Here we are, week 5 of the Make a Memory series. Each Monday now through the end of August I will feature a special family tradition from one of my favorite bloggers. It is so important to create lasting memories with our families and this will be a fun way to get ideas for fun traditions we can start with our own families. So let’s dive right in and see how Kierste from Brown Paper Packages and her family make a memory!

Hello there! I’m Kierste, from Brown Paper Packages, and I’m delighted to be here today!

I love summer. It’s full of so many of my favorite things–the beach, BBQ’s, watermelon, the 4th of July, flip flops, campfires in the backyard, and much more. But there is one more thing that our family loves to do in the summer, and has become a favorite summer tradition…movie nights!

Movie night is much loved at our house. A lot of the time it is spontaneous and casual, and we all cozy up together to watch and munch popcorn. But there are also extra special times during the summer when it’s an “official movie night”–planned in advance, and highly anticipated…mostly due to the concession stand.
The week preceding movie night, all the kids are able to earn concession “money” (in Monopoly form). They do this by being good listeners, obeying quickly, keeping their room clean, going the extra mile, being kind to siblings, extra chores, etc. (Want your baseboards or windowsills cleaned? This is a great week for that!)
That evening, I set up a concession stand with popcorn, cans of soda, candy bars, cookies, and cotton candy, all labeled with prices. I also have fruit available, for free. 🙂 They can even purchase a variety pack, that comes with pop (if you’re under 5, it comes in a sippy cup!), popcorn, and a candy bar for a set amount. It is SO fun. The kids love it, we all look forward to it, and it’s an extra incentive and reward for good behavior and helping around the house.

With all this yummy concession food, I needed something for them to keep it all together. Using the cardboard flats that canned goods come on, you can have adorable boxes that are perfect for movie night.

Movie Concession Boxes

ITEMS YOU NEED:

  • cardboard flats with sides–pick them up at the grocery store on your next trip! Look for boxes with sturdy sides and bottom, and no nicks or cuts.
  • spray paint
  • scrapbook paper
  • distress ink
  • Mod Podge and foam brush
  • craft paint
  • foam stamps
DIRECTIONS:

  • Dust off your boxes, and make sure they are free of any lint.
  • Paint them with the spray paint. The inside bottom and sides need to be done well–no cardboard showing, but the outside doesn’t need to be perfect, since you will covering most of it up with paper. Let dry.
***Painting tip: Take several large pieces of plywood or solid wood boards, and hammer in very long nails into them, so that they poke through on the other side at least an inch or more. (see my painting pics…you’ll see mine) When you’re ready to paint, lay the wood down with the nails pointing up. This will provide a great surface to set the items you’re painting on…allowing you to get at all angles and not have to stick to the surface.

  • Measure the sides of your boxes, then cut scrapbook paper to fit.
  • Distress all edges.
  • Using the foam brush, apply a layer of Mod Podge directly onto the box. Place your paper on the box, then add another layer of Mod Podge on top.
  • Repeat on all sides. Let dry.
  • Stamp desired names in the middle of your box using craft paint and foam stamps. I like to use my finger to apply the paint to the stamp–it allows for more control over your paint.

You’re done! You’re ready for a movie night of your own!
P.S. We LOVE our popcorn containers from the One Spot at Target…only $1, and SO fun. We use them all the time. Our Target has them right now, so yours might as well!

…..
Thanks so much for having me Michelle, and to all of you for reading. It was so fun to be here!

Come on by brown paper packages to say hi–I’d love to have you!

What a fun idea to let them earn concessions. It is amazing what kids will do for some candy! My little guy would flip over having his very own! Thanks Kierste for a great idea on how to make a memory!

Point of View: Shelves {Book Shelves}

June 24, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 16 Comments

Welcome to another month of Point of View where, on the 4th Friday of each month, we each show you our takes on a particular theme. This month’s theme is SHELVES. Just look at the fun projects we have lined up for you!

1. Camilla (Rosy Red Buttons)
2. Michelle (Stay right here!)
3. Jonie (Just Between Friends)
4. Amy (Ameroonie Designs)
5. Gwen (Gwenny Penny)

Are you interested in participating as a guest member of Point of View? We are looking for people who would like to join us. We will be including one guest each month, so if you would like to take part contact Amy from Ameroonie Designs (utahchemnrd@yahoo.com). Please include your blog name and URL, and we will add you to the list. You will be notified in advance when it is your turn.

Now on to my shelves! Book shelves to be exact. No, not shelves to house books, books hung as shelves! I loved this idea when I first saw it on Kojo Designs and just had to make some with my own twist of course. Her books were all put together as one shelf, but I wanted to put dinos on mine for my little guys paleontology room and they are too long to fit on the book so I made each book an individual shelf.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Books
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • L Brackets
  • Screws
  • Anchors
  • Clamps
  • Drill

1. First, make paper cutouts of your books, write the book colors on them and hang them on the wall re-arranging them until you are happy.

2. Next measure so they will be evenly spaced and hold the brackets where you will want your books and mark where the holes need to be with your pencil. Drill the holes and place anchors so the screws won’t pull out of the dry wall. Now, screw the L brackets in place.

3. Next, screw the books on to the brackets. We decided to use clamps to hold the books closed tighter so the screws would grab more of the pages and make them more secure.

4. Place your decor and you’re done!

I will have a dino on each book I just need to put the rest together. They are just wood puzzles I got at Harbor Freight for $1 each, but they are perfect for what I wanted!

Now we would love to see your take on shelves!! Head over to the Point of View linky party over on Just Between Friends and you may be featured on one of the Point of View contributors sites.

DIY Under $5: Dice

June 15, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

I am in the process of re-decorating our game/playroom. You saw my giant dominos and what better way to complete the set than with some larger than life dice to go along!

Dice

I found these foam dice a while back and loved that they were huge, but they were not exactly the bold color I needed for my new scheme.

I enhanced the white dots with my craft paint, mod podged over each size to seal the foam and added garage sale dot stickers for the numbers.

Then, I pulled out my new secret weapon Krylon Dual Paint (paint and primer in one) in Semi-gloss Cherry Red and gave each side of the dice a few coats until it was the color I wanted.

Now my great big dice are happy red and ready to style up our game room.

Aren’t they so fun next to the little dice?

Total cost:
Dice: $2.50
Paint: free for a review (you’ll see more of it soon)
Craft paint, mod podge, stickers: on hand

Now it’s time to link up your $5 projects!

Please remember:

  • Only link to your own projects that cost you $5 or less (price does not have to include items you had on hand)
  • You can link past projects that fit the dollar limit, but please only link each project one time
  • No giveaways or items for sale
  • Please link back so others can join the party and so you have the opportunity to be featured on Saturday!

DIY Under $5 {Smores Recipe}

June 8, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 17 Comments

I am excited to share a recipe with you today! The best part about it is that in true tipsy fashion you only need 3 ingredients and about 3 minutes to make these delectable delights! (I shared this a few weeks ago on My Junk Drawer so if it looks familiar, that’s why.)

I have been pining for warm weather (it is finally starting to be nice after weeks and weeks of rain) and the chance to get outside so I decided to bring the outdoors in with a summertime favorite of ours, S’mores!

Or as Buzz Lightyear would call them, “delicious hot schmoes.”

Smores Recipe

Supplies Needed:

  • Graham Crackers
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Almond Bark aka dipping chocolate

1. Lay out 8 graham squares on a cookie sheet. (I know I only have 6, but I had leftover chocolate so you can do 8.)

2. Chop up about 2 oz. of almond bark. Microwave for one minute and stir until smooth. Add more time in 15 second increments if needed.

3. Spoon a good amount on to each cracker.

4. Add about 10 mini marshmallows to each cracker.

5. Use remaining chocolate to drizzle on with a spoon.
6. Heat oven to broil and allow almond bark to dry so it is not shiny. Pop them in to the fridge for a minute if you are impatient like me.

7. Put them in the oven for about 1 minute 15 seconds or until golden brown. Watch them closely!!

Wow your unsuspecting kiddo with a totally awesome treat!

Good to the last ooey gooey drop!

They are also great for a little Thank you or thinking of you gift!
Just skip the broiling step so they can do it on their own and have a nice warm treat.
Cover some cardboard in tin foil, pop it into a treat bag and tie with a ribbon.

My tag is a laminate sample from the hardware store dressed up with a sticker and some paper on the back with directions.

Total cost: $3 to buy the almond bark, I had the rest on hand

Now it’s time to link up your $5 projects!

Please remember:

  • Only link to your own projects that cost you $5 or less (price does not have to include items you had on hand)
  • You can link past projects that fit the dollar limit, but please only link each project once
  • No giveaways or items for sale
  • Please link back so others can join the party and so you have the opportunity to be featured on Saturday!
