14 Winter Beauty Tips

February 14, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Thanks to Walgreens for underwriting this post. I was paid as a member of the Clever Girls Collective, but the content is all mine. Visit http://www.discoverbeautywithin.com/.

Is it still cold where you live? It is currently 38 degrees here in Utah. Yay. So the stores are breaking out the swimwear while I’m still trying to squeeze my kids in to their car seats with parkas on. This time of year can get a bit drab and slightly depressing when the cold just seems to linger, so let’s make the best of it and talk winter beauty.

Here’s a few tips…

Color:

  • You may not have seen the sun in weeks, but pretend you just got back from Cancun with a self-tanning lotion. They are way better than they used to be and can breathe a little color back in to that pasty skin. Heck, even take a trip to the tanning bed. It will be like a 10 minute vacation and it helps beat the winter blues.

  • Get a powdered bronzer that you can just brush over your face to add some highlights of color.
  • Add a pop of color with a fun scarf and learn how to tie it a few different ways. It will keep you warm and add a hint of style.
  • Get a fun color of nail polish. I’ve heard that red and pink nail polish make you happy, so find a shade you like and rock it!

Dryness: Don’t skimp on moisturizing!
  • I love a good hand cream (my pediatrician recommends Eucerin) or body butter in the winter. None of that runny stuff, something thick & creamy. Use it daily.
  • Even though it’s winter, be sure to use a facial moisturizer with sunscreen. The UV rays are still out there.
  • Moisturizers are more effective on properly exfoliated skin. Exfoliate on a weekly basis with a salt or sugar scrub or a product made specifically for the face.
  • Certain soaps can dry out your skin. Look for one with moisturizer. I like Dove. My sisters dermatologist actually told her it was the best for her face and body.
  • For really dry skin, try fish oil pills. Weird, I know. I had a couple of dry spots by my nose (thank you tissues) that would not go away. My mom told me to get fish oil and they cleared right up after a few days of taking it! Oh and get this, I got them in burpless. Ha ha.

  • Keep hand cream next to the sink and use it every time you wash your hands to combat dryness.
  • Pay special attention to your feet. Lather them in a thick moisturizer and sleep in cotton socks.
  • Use a good lip balm daily and exfoliate lips using a wet toothbrush. Do not lick your lips! It drys them out.
  • Run a humidifier overnight. It helps with colds, but is also said to reduce static in hair caused by dryness. (We like Crane because they are cute. We have two frogs and a dragon. I am rooting for the owl one next.)

  • If you have dry hair, try not to wash it everyday. It can strip away the natural oils needed to keep it healthy. Try to go 2 or even 3 days if possible. Use a dry shampoo for a clean look and feel between washes.
So there you have it. A few things to make winter a little more beautiful. What’s your favorite winter beauty trick?

How to Eat to Lose Weight

January 5, 2012 By Michelle Barneck 11 Comments

This tip comes from the hubs. The first time he did it, it totally made me laugh.
Eating in a tiny bowl with a baby spoon let’s you still enjoy the things you love. The small portions help you cut calories, but the baby spoon makes it last and seem like more. Ha!

Photo Shoot Tips

September 8, 2011 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

A big thanks to Fullerton Photographics for sponsoring this post about how to get the best family pictures.

Whether because of the approaching holidays or sending the kids to school and realizing how grown up they are, I think at this time of year everyone starts thinking about family pictures. We all want a great way to show off just how special our families are. Here are a few tips to get you that much closer to that perfect picture.

Photo Shoot Tips

1. What to Wear

  • Choose a color scheme for the family including a few colors to coordinate. It doesn’t have to be matchy, matchy. Stick with mostly solid colors or light patterns. There is tons of fantastic inspiration by googling what to wear family photography.
  • Wear clothing that is comfortable and coordinates with the season. They may look cute, but you will not get good pics if your family is whining about rubbing shoes or being too hot.

I love these monthly what to wear boards from Laura Fleming!

2. Location, Location, Location

  • Choose a location that fits your families personality. If you are more reserved, an urban area with graffiti and purple brick is probably not the best for you.
  • It can be fun to choose a place that has meaning to you. We had our last family pictures at an old barn next to my parents house that was being torn down.
  • If you have young kids they may do better at a location outdoors where they have fun photo opps to explore.
  • Try to keep it to one location. It will keep the kiddos and Dad for that matter happier about the whole experience.

3. Be Prepared

  • Choose a time when everyone is fed and well rested. Don’t risk getting to
  • Take along water, non-messy snacks, hairspray, baby wipes (they even safely get dirt off wedding dresses!), etc. to combat anything that may become a frustration.
  • I have been known to bribe. Smarties are great because they are fast and don’t change their face or tongue colors. I told my son he could have a pajama movie party when we got home if he was good for his photo shoot with his brother. It worked wonders and cost me nothing.

4. Don’t be a Poser…or do.

  • Research different photography styles and poses. Do you like everyone posed in a certain place or lifestyle where it is more relaxed and everyday family interaction? Do you want props of any kind, like balloons or chairs? Find what you like and communicate that with your photographer.
  • I created a Pinterest board to keep track of photo poses and ideas that I liked. It is a great visual way to keep track of things you love.

5. Be flexible.

  • This tip is especially for me. Have an idea of what you want, but don’t stress if everything does not go according to plan. Most photographers will get a good shot even if Little Joey won’t sit perfectly on the rocking horse. Keeping it low key will keep everyone be in a better mood which translates to better pictures. We all know “if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy” so relax and have a good time.
  • Some of my favorite pictures have been where the kids aren’t posed or even looking at the camera for that matter.

We are getting our family pictures at the end of this month and I can’t wait!

I hope these tips will help get you great family pictures!
