Ten Tips for Affordable Baby Boy Nursery Decor

April 15, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

I am not one for pastel and bunnies. I wanted something that would last a few years and be fun for a little boy’s room, not just a baby. I chose a transportation theme. I wanted something pretty classic. I am not in to cartoons like Pooh Bear, etc.

If you are wondering why the ten tips, well, not only is it a good round number, but today I hit 10,000 visitors on Tipsy! Yay!

Thanks for all your support! I am thrilled to hit such a big number in less than two months! I am so lucky to have great friends and followers and I LOVE hearing all your comments!

So, here is a run down of my little guy’s room. (Unfortunately, some of the prices have gone up since I purchased in 2007. I am certain I did the whole room for under $300, with a few existing items of course. The prices listed are the current market price.)

Here is a view of the room from left to right.

1. Re-purpose existing items in your house.

  • I repainted this old boat shelf I had to match the room and hold the baby monitor.
  • I had this metal shelving unit that worked out perfectly because there was a floor vent on this wall. I would have covered the only source of heat if I had covered it with a solid piece of furniture. I bought some dish tubs at the dollar store to use as catch-all toy bins.

2. Hand Paint Dresser Knobs. I had so much fun painting these to match the crib bedding. I wanted something custom and fun, so I did it myself. I spent about $10 on acrylic paint and brushes.

3. Paint-A gallon of Green, a gallon of Cinderella Blue, a quart of black and a whole lot of patience.

  • I painted the two toned blue/green first and then taped off the section in the middle for the road using a level and chalk lines to get it straight. It is about 6 inches wide.
  • I made a stencil for the white dashes by cutting the rectangles out of the thick 2 inch blue painting tape with an exacto knife. I moved it around the room adding the white paint (which I already had) over the stencil. It did not come out as clean as I wanted, so I went back around with a ruler and a black sharpie to cover up any blurry lines and make the edges completely straight and crisp.
  • I originally planned to use magnetic paint so that I could hang matchbox cars with magnets around the road, but the guy at Lowe’s said that paint doesn’t work very well so I gave up on it.

4. Paint & Modge Podge Shapes/Letters–

  • I picked these wood shapes up at Robert’s Crafts and painted them to match the crib bedding. I am very proud of the police car. It is an exact replica of the bedding. 🙂 They were a dollar or two each.
  • I painted the edges and modge podged scrapbook paper onto these letters to spell his name. Then, I embellished them with buttons. I attached them to the door with glue dots.

  • I got this wood 12×12 frame, painted it black and distressed the edges. It holds a piece of scrapbook paper that has an extended family tree. It will eventually help him learn about aunts, uncles, and cousins.

5. Wall Stickers-I picked these up at Target for about $15. They added that little extra I needed to spice up the road.

6. DIY Light Switch Plate-I saw some really cute ones, but they were pricey. Instead, I just cut a hole in a leftover wall sticker and put it on the existing switch cover. It turned out really cute.

7. Curtains-I picked these up at Walmart for $10 or $15 per panel. I love how they look like overalls, totally boy! I plan on making some car themed tie backs soon. They are great for making the room dark for naps.

8. Don’t be afraid of the discount stores! You know, the sad thing is that I scoured every baby store and department store around because I wanted everything to be just right (but in our budget). I did not want to look at Walmart because, well you know why, but I ended up finding a lot of our stuff there. Go figure.

  • Crib Bedding 4 pieces (sheet, bumper pad, skirt and comforter) for $42 from Walmart. This is a steal! The other bedding I liked was $175. Are you kidding me? I don’t spend that much on my bedding!

  • Glider and Ottoman $130 from Walmart. I figured I would want one of these for those late nights where mommy is up with little one so daddy can get rest for work. Boy was I right! We still use it everyday as we read stories before each nap and bedtime.

  • Crib $170 from Walmart I really liked the sleigh design and the fact that it can grow with him since it is a 4 in 1. I’m sure we will be converting it to the toddler bed soon!

10. Check the Dollar Store-I am telling you there are some gems out there if you keep your eyes open and theme in mind. Three street signs, three dollars. I also found this stop light in the Target dollar section. The lights alternate when you turn it on.

Phew…that was a lengthy one! Hope you saw something you liked! Tell me your favorite!

Feature Friday-Robyn (Baby Shower Decor/DIY Home Decor)

April 10, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

Today’s Feature Friday is my Aunt in-law Brenda’s best friend Robyn. (That sounds a little hilarious.) I love this woman. She is the friendliest, most endearing woman you will ever meet. I am a little embarrassed to say that I actually thought she was my Aunt’s Sister. I was invited to her home for my Cousin Brooke’s baby shower (She is having her baby today!!! Congrats! Yay!) and was so impressed with all the adorable baby shower decor along with all her great home decor. One problem…I forgot my camera. So, I apologize in advance for the cell phone pictures. They most definitely do not do it justice.

  • The first thing I noticed was this adorable diaper banner in the front room. She hung up a ribbon and hung diapers with clothes pins to spell out Baby Shower.
  • These wooden ABC blocks were really fun. They were stacked all around with teddy bears and balloon bouquets. What a great idea. Just buy a 4×4 (not a 2×4, the square one), then cut it into blocks. Next, sand the edges smooth. Buy some wood letters, glue them on and voila! The great thing is leaving them in their natural state makes them works for boys and girls!
  • How about this table spread! Not only does it have so many cute baby items (bears, quilts, books) but it is covered in delicious treats! It is cut off in this pic, but another cute idea was she had blue dove chocolate eggs in an apothecary jar (or vase, I can’t remember, but they looked really cute).

  • This was a gift Brooke received at the shower, but it was sooo cute that I had to show it. It is a Glenna Jean Big Baby Pin Hanger. How adorable to hang pic frames from bows or tiny hats. I love it!

  • Someday soon I will post my gift. I have given you the instructions to a lot of it already! See the Ribbon Embellished Burp Cloth and car seat cover tutorials. Watch for the Teddy Bear Hooded Towel and diaper card cover coming soon!

Let’s switch gears in to home decor! These next two ideas are so simple, but make a big impact.

  • How about some fresh flowers? Instead of getting cut flowers, go to the garden center and buy some small flowers meant to plant in your yard. Just place tissue paper around the plastic base and tie with a ribbon. Then place in a basket, instant spring!
  • I am definitely doing this one. You know those kitchen chairs..the white ones that you wonder what to do with. Why not paint them black and give them a touch of class. How did I never think of this?!

All of this from just two rooms?! I can definitely take a lesson from her! She had so many wonderful groupings too! I am terrible at grouping things on shelves and walls.
Sorry again about the pictures! That will teach me to leave my camera home!

GreAt iDeaS Robyn!

Feature Friday-Jaimie (Girl’s Room Decor & Manicotti Recipe)

April 3, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 2 Comments

My Feature Friday for this week is my roommate from USU Jaimie! She comes to us all the way from big ol’ Texas. She has some great ideas on DIY girl’s bedroom decor and a yummy manicotti recipe that I can’t wait to share…so let’s go!

This ladybug wall mural is to die for! Jaimie did this herself with Spray paint and black acrylic paint. What a neat way to make a plain wall come alive! This little girl’s room is all about fun!

Jaimie made this polka dot valance for a fun window covering in her little girl’s room. She used heat n bond and no thread at all to put it all together! Can you believe it? A no sew window valance that is quick, easy and totally cute!

I especially love it because you can change out the fabric to suit your tastes and if you are like me, boy themed. How cute would a denim valance with strips of stripes or plaid be! Some day I will get to do a little girls room.

Last, but definitely not least, is her Ooey Gooey Manicotti recipe. She tweaked this one from a box recipe. That is my kind of girl, find an idea you love and make it your own! I ask you how can a recipe with four kinds of cheese in it not be scrumptious? Lactose intolerant people turn back now!

Manicotti
1 package manicotti, I think there were 14 in the box
2 15 oz containers ricotta cheese, I used whole milk HEB brand
1 package italian blend shredded cheese, it has the parmesan and mozzarella
grated parmesan, I didn’t measure, I just shook til I thought it looked yummy!
minced onion, a couple shakes
garlic salt, I used Lawry’s garlic salt which is coarse ground and has parsley
italian seasoning

Sauce
I use Prego with mushrooms, the big plastic bottle(I use a lot of sauce)
Add 1 can of crushed tomatoes
1 can Hunt’s tomato puree
minced onion
Weber grill creations roasted garlic & herb

I let that simmer while I was getting everything else ready

DIRECTIONS
Cook manicotti according to package directions (I added some Olive Oil to the water so they won’t stick together). Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 3 cups mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and seasonings. Spread 1 cup spaghetti sauce in ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Stuff manicotti shells with cheese mixture (I found using a butter knife worked the best, or cut the corner off a large ziploc) ; arrange over sauce. Top with remaining sauce.
Cover and bake at 375 degrees F for 35-40 minutes. Uncover; sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake 10 minutes longer or until cheese is melted and manicotti is heated through.

*I always add a lot of cheese. I put mine on before I put it in the oven and I didn’t cook it as long, probably the 35 minutes would be fine. Also cook your noodles for less time than the package says, since you are putting it in the oven to bake, you don’t want it soggy.

Great ideas Jaimie! You are now entered in to the hall of fame as Tipper of the Week!

Feature Friday-Jen

March 27, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

I have known today’s feature for 28 years. That makes me sound terribly old. She is my sis Jenni

and she keeps amazing me with the things she comes up with. She is all sorts of fun (she is a yellow for those who know what that means) and is the life of the party. Which is fitting since today is the last day of The Ultimate Blog Party 2009!

Let’s start this party girl’s feature with her remake of my DIY wall art. She took it to a whole new level by making them circles instead of squares and personalized them with her daughters name in wood letters. So cute!!
They have a flair for things girly at their house. Take a look at these adorable skirts that she made for her little girl who insists on wearing a skirt every day (don’t worry she made 8, one for everyday of the week and an extra for laundry day). How fun are they? She got most of the fabric from her Mother-in-law’s leftovers. That is my kind of price! She also made one out of jersey knit for a light summer skirt for herself.
Need a fun inside activity for the kiddos since winter popped back in to our lives this week? Try this funtastic doll house and barnyard made from boxes. Creativity at its best my friends. Give all those microscopic toys a home.

Great ideas Jen! You are now entered in to the hall of fame as Tipper of the Week!
