Design my Kitchen!

July 22, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

I was compensated for this post, but all opinions and requests for ideas are my own.

A few months after we moved in to our house our kitchen flooded. Darn that refrigerator ice line. It was such a nightmare at the time, but a blessing in disguise as we got new hickory wood floors, which inspired us to also install granite, a new faucet, and paint our kitchen/great room. Since then, our kitchen has been sitting unchanged and has been hinting at me that something must be done.

Click to read on…

Our faucet decided to help the cause by being oh so willing to pull down, but putting up a fight when it’s time to go back in to place. I knew it was time for a change, but I have a hard time deciding on something I will hopefully keep for years. I want it to be just right.

Luckily, I recently found the Delta Inspired Living site. It is awesome! They have a style quiz to help you determine what type of faucet will fit your design aesthetic best. It was right on too. It said I was traditional which is right on the mark.

Then, I found the Touch2O Kitchen Faucet and my world was rocked. With a simple tap anywhere on the faucet spout, hub or handle the flow of water is activated. And get this, it doesn’t even have to be from your hand. If you are wrist deep in chicken trimming, just tap it with your forearm to turn it on. Mind blown. This is a need people. I am a cross contamination freak. Touch20 technology is also water conservation smart. It will automatically turn off after four minutes.

I found the Cassidy with an Arctic Stainless finish that combines the traditional look with the Touch20 technology and was sold. I loved it the minute I saw it and knew it would fit in seamlessly. I cannot wait to have it in my kitchen! (The picture below is the Cassidy in Chrome finish so mine will be slightly less shiny, but you get the idea.)

I have been collecting ideas for my kitchen for a while now, but would love to hear you’re opinion!
If this was your kitchen, what would you do?

Paint cabinets, add backsplash, change up window treatments? Help inspire me with your vision! With a beautiful new faucet on its way, my space could use a refresh!

Delta Touch2O Technology for your kitchen and bathroom is precisely in tune with your every touch. Take the quiz to learn which faucet style best describes you at deltafaucet.com

Summer Reading Made Fun!

July 18, 2013 By Michelle Barneck Leave a Comment

I received product for review, but all opinions are very much my own.

Summer is a time for fun, swimming, popsicles, and play, but for some of us it is also a time we worry about the hard work during the school year slipping away. It’s so nice to have the kids have time from free play and using their imagination. What if it could be so easy to also keep up their reading skills and maybe even improve them over the summer?!

Sounds like work right? Flashcards and phonics and reading aloud. While those things are fabulous and of course recommended as well, I have found the easy way out. It is on the computer which my son loves and all I have to do is log him in and he does his daily practice. It is short so he doesn’t get whiny about how it takes forever and they actually say not to help your child. The program works best if they do it on their own. Glory day! I love helping them to feel independent and to learn on their own.
So you probably want to know what it is huh? It’s called Reading Kingdom and it’s been great!

Reading Kingdom

First thing, it has your child take a little quiz to see what level they are on and what areas they need extra help with. I love that it personalized the program based on each child.

Not only has it kept my little guy sounding things out and improving his sight reading and letter recognition, but it has helped him learn where the letters are on the keyboard which in this day and age is basically an essential life skill.

For instance, in this activity he was to find the one that could make the word girls and type the letters to complete the word. (To give you a frame of reference on level, he is going in to kindergarten.)

After each session it gives them a reward in their passport. It also keeps track of their progress in each area and how far they are in each level on an easy to read dashboard so you can keep tabs on how they are doing.

I love that it is super easy, he loves that it is like another computer game. Really it has been a win, win.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Canvas Art Personalized for Your Home

July 17, 2013 By Michelle Barneck Leave a Comment

I was invited to participate in the Pins to Projects series on Studio 5 and inspired by this canvas art from Southern Belle Soul, Mountain Bride Heart created some one of a kind wall art for my master bedroom. You can see the TV segment below.

So here’s the low down on how I made the first canvas, since seeing as how that segment was filmed a few hours ago, the second canvas is not completed yet.

SUPPLIES:
  • Canvas
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Permanent Spray Adhesive
  • Vinyl & Cricut (or purchase letter stickers)
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Foam Brush

The best part about this canvas art besides it being completely personalized is it is super affordable canvas art. 16×20 Canvases are 2 for $8 at Hobby Lobby. You can even use a 40% off coupon.

First off, choose what you want it to say. I love the pieces in my home to hold special meaning. I was making art for our master bedroom so I chose lyrics from a song from our wedding video that both my husband and I love. I also chose paper that looks like love letters because my husband loves to write and wrote many poems for me.

If you want it wrinkly with seams and lots of texture and character:

-Experiment on the computer with fonts and the placement of the words on your canvas size so you know the exact design you want and size of letters you will need. (I experimented with an 8×10 area since my canvas was 16×20. Then I just made the letters twice as big)
-Cut your words out of vinyl using a craft cutting machine. (If you want to save some money you can also use contact paper from the dollar store. Just be sure to adjust the cutting pressure accordingly.)
-Coat the canvas with spray adhesive. Use full sheets of scrapbook paper and lay them on the canvas perfectly lining up the seams.

-Use transfer tape to keep the vinyl words straight and place on the canvas.

-Squirt swirls of paint directly on the canvas. Spread over the whole surface with a foam brush. Use one coat if you want your paper design to show through slightly. If you want solid color, use two coats.

-The paint causes the paper to wrinkle and shrink up slightly to expose seams. You will need to touch up seams and edges with paint once it dries unless you want them white.

-Carefully remove the vinyl words to expose the design. If you try to do it too fast, the paper will rip.

-You can coat it with Mod Podge for protection.

I am an advertising nerd and love that this reminds me of old billboards or subway ads starting to wrinkle and peel to expose what is underneath.
I decided to do a second version too add more color to our space. You can see a bit of it in the tv segment above.

Spray paint collage canvas art:

For more of a patchy look…

-Use all the same steps as above with the vinyl words, but alter the paper and painting steps.

-Rip out colorful pieces of magazine pages and use a glue stick to glue overlapping the pieces collage style to your canvas. The amount of texture you want will determine how tightly you want to secure the edges of each piece.

-In a well ventilated area free from wind or moisture, spray paint using thin coats and a slow even back and forth motion. Go off of the edges of the canvas when changing direction so the paint remains even and doesn’t puddle near the edges.

I love how they turned out and can’t wait to hang them in my bedroom!
