Foil Dinner Tips

July 27, 2010 By Michelle Barneck 10 Comments

With summer winding down I thought I would share a thing or two we have learned about foil dinners and how to make them the very best.

  • Line the foil with a leaf of cabbage to keep your dinner from burning.
  • Use tater tots instead of plain potatoes to cook faster and add more flavor
  • Ingredients we like to use: Hamburger patty, tater tots, onion, any other veggie we have around (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Zucchini, carrots, snow or sugar snap peas, etc)
  • Add onion to flavor even if you don’t like to eat it
  • Add salt and pepper over the whole thing
  • Use two layers of regular foil or one layer of heavy duty, roll the edges to form a pouch.
  • If customizing the dinners to people’s preferences, use a sharpie to mark with initials

There’s nothing like unwrapping a pouch full of fire cooked goodness just when the air starts to get a little cool at night.

What are your favorite tips for foil dinners?

mmmm. foil dinners are my favorite 🙂 we spread butter liberally on the bottom of the foil. but our best tip?? put a few spoons of cream of mushroom soup (right out of the can) on top of everthing. makes a delicious sauce 🙂

We couldn’t have fires at girls camp last year, so we taught the girls to build fires at a backyard firepit. We made tin foil dinners, but we added canned sweet potatoes. It was so good, and because they were canned, they were already soft. The flavors we so good together.

great tips! We also like to use butter – just little scoops through out the whole thing (we double wrap the foil so the butter doesn’t leak everywhere). I love using Omaha Steak Seasoning in it too – the flavor is just wonderful!

Okay. So I love s’mores and I am even game for hot dogs, but I’ve never been a fan of tinfoil dinners…Your post has inspired me (well, that and the fact that it’s probably not normal to deprive three little boys of tinfoil dinners).

I think we’ll have to try these in the next couple of weeks before school starts.

am I going to see you at the Cupcake Conference on Saturday?

Ok I dont have a tip i have a question. I tried the tinfoil dinner for the first time the other night with my boyfriend and in one of the dinners the bottom burned bad because the botton layer was hashbrown style potatoes wich is probly the reason it burned. I really dislike the taste of cabbage but i think it sounds like a great idea to keep from burning. Does the flavor of the cabbage go into the dinner???

we use one layer of heavy duty foil and then 4-5 sheets of wet newspaper and then a second layer of heavy duty foil. It seems to help- by both steaming the food a bit and providing some insulation against burning.

You can also do tin foil breakfast. You use ground sausage on the bottom then add shredded potatoes on top. Shape the hash browns sort of into a nest shape and then crack an egg into the nest. Season with salt and pepper. You can also add green peppers, onions, etc if you like that kind of stuff 🙂
