YW Leadership Idea-Don’t be a Turkey

November 19, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

We had our Young Women presidency meeting at my house this month which means I was in charge of the leadership moment for the Young Women class presidencies. I wanted to focus on confidence and not being scared to share ideas and beliefs. I came up with this turkey handout since it is the month of Thanksgiving. It also goes along really well with nest year’s theme: “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” Joshua 1:9.

I talked about how they should not be scared or ashamed to speak out whether it be conducting at church or defending their beliefs at school. I read them the story of chicken little and how he was brave (one of my little guy’s faves) even when he felt alone.

Don't Be a Chicken! (Disney's Chicken Little)

Then, I gave them the turkey handouts and with my family’s traditional turkey cookies.

They loved the turkey cookies!

November Visiting Teaching Handout

November 2, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 11 Comments

This month there is not a set message for Visiting Teaching. We are supposed to prayerfully choose a talk from October General Conference. There were so many amazing messages and it was really hard to choose! I finally decided on the talk on the “ity” virtues by Bishop H. David Burton the Presiding Bishop. I love this message of letting virtue garnish your thoughts. Maybe I am biased because I am in YW and we got the new value of Virtue this year. Anyway, here is my VT Handout for November! I hope you like it!

I did the word cloud using Wordle. It is a fun little site that does all the work for you!

The quotes’ font is Hello Sark from Kevin and Amanda.

Ok, I have to brag again. My October handout was spotted on my Aunt Brenda’s (technically aunt-in-law) fridge and her cute daughter, Lindsay, printed out FIVE for her visiting teaching. She was doing her roommates VT for them which is why she needed five. She is super awesome and kind like that! Plus, I got so many wonderful comments from you ladies out there saying you are using and loving them! Yay! That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

Feature Friday-Green Jello With Carrots

October 2, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

In honor of General Conference weekend, we are going to have a fun LDS feature today! They are Melissa and Melanie the cute Mother/Daughter team from Green Jello With Carrots.

Green Jello with Carrots

These ladies have mad illustration skills and offer a variety of super fun religious products, but we’ll get to that after the one-minute interview.

What is your favorite crafting tool or secret weapon?

Photoshop – without it we’d be lost. (Also we’re pretty handy with a good old fashioned pencil!)

Where do you get your inspiration for your drawings?

Melissa: I get my inspiration from my kids. They’re crazy and cute and huge guinea pigs for all our products.
Melanie: Church callings mostly. Being in the Primary and Young Women programs helps to know what’s needed.

What was your favorite cartoon as a kid?

Melissa: I have always like things in phases – currently my favorite artists are Sandra Boynton and David Shannon.
Melanie: The Flinstones (despite Melissa’s disgust with their three-toed characters – honestly, who can remain properly balanced on just three toes? Now, four toes….that’s better.)

Who is your favorite General Conference speaker?

Melissa: I miss hearing President Hinckley.
Melanie: President Monson and the way he relates to people.

Now for the faves…we’ll start with Melanie and Melissa’s and then I will share mine.

Our favorite products are the Dress Up Girl and Boy file folder games. I like to “help” my kids put them together in Sacrament Meeting, while completely paying full attention to the speakers and not the silliness of combining cowgirl hair with a princess dress, of course.

There are sooo many cute Dress ups! You will have to see it to believe it!

Also, the “I Can Draw Books” are awesome. I think people get a bit confused about them. They have progressive steps on how to draw things from the different topics (Noah and the Ark, Joseph Smith, etc.). My 6 and 4 year old love using them.

The Nativity Noah's Ark

Ok, now for a few of my faves. How do I choose? Well we’ll start with the free stuff, of course. I am a sucker for the free stuff. There is a whole sections of fun freebies. Oh and did I mention Freebie Fridays? Every Friday on their blog they have one free item. That way you can see how fun their stuff is and become addicted like me.

School Days I am Special

I am really in to file folder games lately. Maybe because I am desperately trying to find anything to keep my almost two year old busy for more than two minutes. They also have a General Conference Packet with some fun activities for the kiddos.

I love their picture of Jesus. He is so happy and gleaming with the “Pure love of Christ.” So precious with the kids loving Him. I get a kick out of the Relief Society sisters. They are too cute!

This new baby clip art is adorable. Perfect for a baby book or a baby shower card. Ugh, it makes me want another one. Is the Love Everyone poster not the sweetest? Too, too cute!

I just love what these ladies do and hope you do too!

Great stuff Melanie and Melissa! You are now entered in to the Hall of Fame!

October Visiting Teaching Handout

September 30, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 9 Comments

Here it is for all you early birds! The October Visiting Teaching message focuses on nurturing the rising generation which is a great message for me since I am a mother and serve in the Young Women’s Presidency. These words are so true! Our youth need us to be strong and lead by example!

Handout was created using items from Shabby Princess, Everyday Mom Ideas

(you’ll hear more about her next Friday), and Kevin and Amanda fonts.

Your VT is important too! We all need to be there to boost each other up! Remember how I said my mom used my VT handout? Well my YW President told me she used it too! Woohoo! Someday maybe the Relief Society President herself will use my handout. C’mon Sister Taylor, you know you want to. 😉
