5 Ways to Get Kids Excited to Brush and Floss

February 13, 2014 By Michelle Barneck Leave a Comment

Anyone else’s kids think brushing is a sprint to see who can finish first? There are times when I have sent them up to brush their teeth and they come out of the bathroom claiming to be done by the time I get to the top of the stairs. Nice try. My job is to not only get them to be a bit more thorough in their dental care, but make it less of a job for both of us.

I set out to find some things to make brushing and flossing more appealing and dare I say fun? Here are the top five things that have helped in our house.

1. Choose a fun toothbrush in their favorite color or character. There are tons of options that cost a couple bucks or less. We’ve had the superhero pack shown on the right and they were $1 a brush. I love the ones with the suction cups that stick to the counter.

2. Use tasty toothpaste. I asked a dentist what toothpaste was best and he said the most important thing is not the brand of toothpaste, but brushing for two minutes. So, let them choose a flavor or color they are excited about.

3. Use a timer. It will show kiddos how long to brush without having to nag them. They’ll feel in control, but get in the two minutes of brushing they need. I love this tooth timer. Is it not the cutest? We got a similar one during our checkup at Burg Pediatric Dentistry. The kids love it.

4. Use flossers. Sometimes normal floss is overwhelming for little hands. Get fun colors or character flossers that they can use by themselves. We got Angry Birds flossers at the dollar store. They even have flavored flossers available.

5. Positive reinforcement is key. Get a fun toothbrushing chart or use little awards like this free tooth award printable to recognize improvements and special efforts.

What things help make brushing fun at your house?

Printable Tooth Award

December 9, 2013 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

My son loves getting awards for sports, reflections, really whatever. He just loves the positive reinforcement for putting the work in. With little kids it is great to celebrate little victories and I find healthy, happy teeth to be one of those. Brushing teeth twice a day for a week, having no cavities at a check up, or leaving a tooth for the the tooth fairy can all be fun little ways to celebrate along the road to great dental health. So I thought, why not create an award for teeth?
Download the free printable tooth award.
Is that not the happiest little tooth ever? What little kid would not love finding that under their pillow with their reward from the tooth fairy or being presented an award for flossing diligently?
Now, I am all for simple so this is designed to be printed on a 4×6 photo card. You can give it to your kiddos just like that with a note written on the back or if you want to take it a little further, cut it out and glue a pin to the back to wear as a badge. Whatever your style, I left it versatile for many occasions and both boys and girls.
Some fun ideas to use the tooth reward badge:
  • a week/month of brushing twice a day
  • flossing everyday for a week/month
  • brushing for 2 minutes every time
  • losing their first tooth
  • getting 6 year old molars
  • no cavities at the dentist
  • being brave at the dentist
  • from the tooth fairy
  • learning to use big kid toothpaste without swallowing it (we are working on this with my 3 year old)
Whatever you are working on, celebrate their success! They will love it and so will you as it keeps them motivated.
Do you have fun things you use to reward dental health? What do you leave from the tooth fairy? What would you use this reward for?
