What the Heck is an RSS feed?

April 26, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

I know some of you out there are wondering this. (exclude heck if you are not from Utah) I found a wonderful explanation of not only what it is, but how to set them up for your blog if you would like some help allowing people to subscribe! Swing by Tip Junkie to see the full explanation.

Here is the cliff notes version. An RSS feed allows you to automatically see when there are updates on a site, instead of having to check periodically. For instance, on my sidebar there are a few different boxes. You can sign up to get free notifications of new posts through RSS (which will feed notifications in to a reader on your computer, I use Google Reader), email, or facebook. This is a convenient way to keep in touch. Plus, frankly, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to know someone is out there wanting to see and hear what I am up to. {{batting eyelashes with big cheesy grin}}

So, here is your chance…I made it super easy (Just for you mom!) if you would like to sign up so you don’t miss a beat.

Follow, Follow me 🙂 Get Tips By RSS

Enter your email address:

Will you get spam…are you kidding me? I would never send you canned meat.

There is also a place on the side bar under the networked blogs logo to sign up to follow on facebook. Sorry, I was not saavy enough to get it to work here.
I know some of you already signed up to follow on my other facebook page, but this one came with the fancy sign up on the blog and receive post notifications option. 🙂

And a big You Guys Rock to those who are already followers!

Earth Day Activities for Kids

April 21, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Here are a bunch of ideas I found for a little earth day fun with the kiddos. There are tons of crafts and printables out there, but here are a few of my favs. I’m totally doing the Rice Crispy earth with my little guy.

  • Magazine Holder from Kaboose This one is not only for the kids. I want these for me. What a great idea! These can be really expensive if you purchase them.

  • Ladybug Rocks from Kaboose How adorable are these? Wouldn’t they be a great addition to the yard?

  • Pine cone Bird Feeder from Kids Craft Zone I was just talking about this one with my sis the other day when my son brought me a pine cone. I did this when I was a child of the 80s.
  • Rice Crispie Earth Recipe from DLTK. I adore anything done with cereal treats. YUM!
  • Tons of Fun Printables from DLTK. For the no prep, no effort, I need to get dinner on the table time.
  • An Earth Worksheet and Recycled Building from Ted Wells2009-04-16-parthenonA.jpg
  • Box Seats from Family Fun Excuse me, will these hold me up? (Ya, right. Maybe 20 Years ago.) I want something so pretty and girly to sit on while I play tools and cars.

  • Space Station made from Recyclables from Family Fun. Earth Day can be a time to play with the solar system too right?
  • Box Car Derby made from cereal boxes from Family Fun. My little boy would get a kick out of this, especially if we made a ramp for them to fly off.
Don’t trash it, play with it! 😉

Five Eco-Friendly Earth Saving Tips for Earth Day

April 20, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

HaPpy EaRth DaY!

Here are some tips on how to be green and keep the earth happy and healthy for our kids!

1. Recycle

  • Lucky for us, where I live recycling is required so we have a recycle can where we can dump all of our recyclable goods. We don’t even have to separate them. Talk about easy.
  • If this is not the case for you, a good place to start is with newspaper and phone books. Collect them in a box or basket and deliver them to the properly marked “dumpsters” in your grocery store parking lot every few weeks.
  • Another way to recycle is thrift store donating and shopping. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

2. Buy Orange Juice

  • What?! Tropicana is having a promotion right now where you get a code that saves 100 square feet of rainforest and gives you a chance to win eco-friendly prizes! How cool! They even show you a picture of your little plot. See my little spot in Peru below.

3. Buy Re-usable shopping bags

  • Mine are from Smith’s, but look pretty similar to the Walmart bags below. Almost a year ago I thought I would try to do my part and bought a couple of these little babies to try them out. I thought it might be annoying to have to remember them every time. Are you kidding?! I LOVE my bags! I have five and am considering a few more.
  • At 99 cents a pop, why not? (They also have bags that keep items cool for about $2)
  • They hold SO much more than plastic bags (which means less trips to unload the car) and they stand up in the back of the car (no more escapee cans or apples). These are a serious blessing in disguise.
  • Oh, I almost forgot to mention that they pay for themselves! At least at Smith’s, You get a 5 cent discount for every bag you have every time you shop. If you do not have some, GET SOME!
  • I just put them back in my trunk whenever I am done putting away the groceries and then I never have to find them on my way to the store.
  • They are also useful for Picnics, Canyon trips, Lakeside lunches, etc.

4. Use Social Networking

  • There are different apps on each site (MySpace, Facebook, etc) that use your clicks to get money from advertisers to save rainforest and ocean.
  • For instance, the two below save One Sq Ft of rainforest for every 10 plants or fish you send to your friends.

You collect plants and fish people send to you in your own little green patch or blue cove. Below is a pic of my little blue cove.

5. Conserve water

  • Use 1/2 empty water bottles you find lying around the house to water plants.
  • Collect water you run in the tub or shower while it’s warming up to fill kiddy swimming pools, fill water storage bottles or water the garden.
  • Turn off the water while shaving or brushing your teeth.

Feature Friday-Amanda (Starting Your Garden Inside/YW Believers Ideas)

April 17, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

My feature Friday for this week is my friend, neighbor, Visiting Teaching companion and Young Women adviser Amanda! Wow, I guess she is forced to see me a lot. 🙂 She is such a fun girl and is so creative!! There were so many things to share! I had to whittle it down to a few faves.

I in no way claim to be a gardener, but really want to get out this year and make my yard something to be proud of, or at least something not to be embarrassed of. Amanda has a great post on Planting a garden inside until it stops looking like this outside.

This is what I found yesterday morning. It looks like those Corona commercials with snow instead of sand. My poor little flowers and blooming tree were blanketed with white.

This is why I have friends, to get me motivated to do things I normally would never think of! Is this not the cutest little garden start?! She gives a whole tutorial on her blog “My Remodeled Life.“

This frame grouping was a giveaway on her blog a few months back, but I had to share. I “LOVE” this idea!I think many of us make a Menu Plan, but I loved Amanda’s idea of making a list of everything she knows how to make so she can just look down the list and choose things for each day. It’s much easier to just pull out a list rather than cookbooks, recipe boxes, etc. There are always recipes I forget about so this would be great. You can group them by season too! Amanda checks the weather for the week to help her make her list temperature appropriate. That’s smarts! And who had handwriting like that? Jealous!

We had an activity for Young Women’s where we made Believers Journals that Amanda designed. This was an idea we got from Jenny Philips 2009 idea packet. We put this years theme, “Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12), on them so the girls would see it every day. Aren’t they amazing? They started out as plain old composition notebooks.

We made these cute Believe blocks for our Beehives for Christmas to introduce this years Mutual theme, but they are great for decor anytime. They went along perfectly with a wonderful lesson that Amanda gave using music to tell the Nativity story.

Great ideas Amanda! You are now entered in to the hall of fame as Tipper of the Week!
