Bathroom Counter Cleanup

July 8, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

This is my little guy’s bathroom. Being 19 months old, he doesn’t use it all that much so it has been the dumping ground for mommy’s “stuff” and my hair drying station. Poor sad ugly counter.

It was about time to clean it up and give it a 30 minute makeover with my new obsession of shopping my house. So, here it is in all its re-used glory!

Here are all the nitty gritty details of what things are and where they came from:

  1. How about some dead flower stems from the yard that look seaish (like how I made up that word?)
  2. Place them in a themey toothbrush holder. My little ones toothbrush has feet on it and will not fit anyway.
  3. Make a grouping in a bread basket, it will only hold about 5 rolls anyway.
  4. Add a striped sash that I bought with every intention of wearing and never did.
  5. An extra hand towel is nice and this one was just in the closet for when I washed the one on the towel rack.
  6. I took this goose from the sunflower arrangement someone gave me when I had my son. It used to have a plant in it. I killed it. Forgot that one in my brown thumb confession.
  7. The paper mache A from the Father’s Day shoot. It’s the first letter in my son’s name, so that worked out well.
  8. Random washcloth we got in a set for our wedding.
  9. Bears that were in here before, but now on a big piece of yard bark to make them look shipwrecked.

Now for a close up.

I am rather pleased with how it turned out if I do say so myself! I think it is a big improvement, and not just because the monster box of tampons is hidden. 😉

End Table Top Swap

July 6, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Lindsay, from Living with Lindsay, will be so proud that I finally got my DIY moss ball done! I had to do mine slightly different than she did because I didn’t look a the tutorial supply list in detail before I purchased. Naughty me.

So, instead of moss sheets I used a bag of moss from the dollar store. Also, for some weird reason I thought she had used T pins not straight pins so I ended up with only about 5 straight pins to use, thanks to my hubby for always pulling them out of his new shirts. And to think I always made fun of him for saving them, not anymore! So in lieu of my lack of pins and moss sheets I ended up just pouring gobs of modge podge onto the styrofoam ball and sticking the moss to it like glue. I secured five places with pins and voila, Moss ball!

Lucky for me, I found this cute little Grecian column looking pot thingy (like my descriptive words?) at D.I. a few weeks before for about a buck. I love it!!

Here it is, my table top transformation. Subtle, yet satisfying! I like the bit of earthiness it brings to the room.

Before After

As a side note, isn’t that little antique table great? It was my grandma’s. She passed away the night I got married. Love you Grandma!

Thrifty Addition

June 10, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 3 Comments

Remember this picture from way back when from my trip to the D.I.? See that little circle in the right hand corner I picked up for $2?

I finally put it to good use in my master bathroom. I added four $1 vanilla pillar candles from Michaels and Voila, one six dollar addition of ambiance!

I love it, but do you think it needs something? A strip of ribbon around the candles? I can’t decide.

Feature Friday-Living With Lindsay

May 22, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

Today’s Feature Friday is Lindsay who I have been blog stalking for a while now. Lindsay writes Living With Lindsay, where she chronicles the adventures in decorating her home. With her trusty glue gun at her side, Lindsay guides you through the pleasures and pitfalls of turning your home into a space you’ll love without breaking the bank (and you know I love that!). Here are some of my favorites:

One of her most recent posts was a tutorial on Painting Laminate Furniture. I was so excited to see this! I always wondered if you could do this and how it would turn out. AMAZING, that’s how! She has the patience of an angel, but look how this armoire turned out!

Before After

This next idea is a great way to add some “life” to your decor for those of you who are brown thumbs like me. You cannot kill these moss balls, they will look just as good three months down the road. Lindsay has a great DIY moss ball tutorial so you too can have a piece of the outdoors inside. I already got my moss for this project, now I just need to schedule some time!

Another way to add some earthiness to your decor is this beautiful quail egg wreath. Lindsay made this during Easter time, but I think it would be a wonderful addition for any time of year. It literally took her 15 minutes to make, which means maybe I could do it in 30!

Does your bathtub look like this?

Yep, mine too! But, what if it could look like this?

You too can make your bathtub look like a swanky hotel or spa with Lindsay’s bathtub storage container tutorial. Be still my heart.

Here’s a quick one. She calls it the Two Second Decorating Fix. I had to share it because I actually used this while helping decorate at my sister’s new house the other day. All you have to do is take the dust covers off the books. What a difference it makes!

Before After

Oh, how I long for the days when I can have pretty things on my tables and shelves and have them stay there. For now, I will settle for being a minimalist so my 18 month old child can roam somewhat freely.

Great ideas and tips Lindsay! You are now entered in to the hall of fame as tipper of the week!
