Feature Friday-Blog Swap with Somewhat Simple!

October 23, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

Good Morning to all! Today for Feature Friday we are doing things a little bit differently. I have turned over the reins and you will be riding with Stephanie from Somewhat Simple today! She is amazing and has a super fun project to share. So here we go…enjoy the ride!

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Hi guys! I am excited to be here on Michelle’s super cute blog taking over for the day. (Isn’t her blog layout so adorable!? It makes me smile just coming here!)

My name is Stephanie and I am a mom of 3 fantastic kids, a wife to my best friend, and creator of the blog somewhat simple. I am a California transplant (Huntington Beach, to be exact) currently residing in beautiful Arizona! (I can say “beautiful” now that it isn’t so stinkin’ hot outside anymore!)

My blog is where I share my latest creations- both at my craft table and in my kitchen. I host a monthly challenge for all my readers that is fun and interactive! I also seem to have a giveaway going on every week, and this week’s giveaway is an awesome one!

Today I put together a little project that takes no time at all! I like this idea (which was inspired by a similar project my SIL made) because I have hardly any pictures hanging on the wall of me and my husband together- all our frames our occupied with pictures of the kiddos (they are much cuter than we are!) but this project will display the awesome places we have been, the fun stuff we have done, and the great memories we have made together! Here is what I did:

I bought this BIG frame at a thrift shop for a couple bucks:

I took it apart, painted it black, then sanded the edges:

Then I gathered pictures- lots and lots of pictures (72 to be exact!)

I uploaded them to Picnik.com and had fun making them all black & white then making a collage.

Picnik has premade templates for collages- I used 3 different templates that hold 8 photos each.

I made 9 total collages and sized them to be 8.25 inches square, which happened to fit my square frame PERFECTLY! No cutting or overlapping needed!.

Then I just printed them out on my computer! Here are the finished collages:

Next I laid (or is it layed?) the collages out and taped them together on the backsides like so:

Lastly, I put them in my frame and showed my husband, of course. He was proud of me!

This is going in my master bedroom, and for the big reveal, you will have to check my blog this weekend when I show off what I did for this week’s challenge. My master bedroom looks fantastic, and this framed picture is the perfect “something” I needed!

That was fun! Thanks for letting me visit here today! Come see what else I have up my creative sleeves, and join in the fun!

Have a great weekend!

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Thanks for the fun project Stephanie! You are now entered in to the Hall of Fame as Tipster of the week!!

Remember how I said it was a blog swap?! Well that means now you can hop on over to Stephanie’s blog and hear from lil ol’ me! I may or may not have shared a fun fall fingerpainting project for your kiddos. πŸ˜‰ Oh and she has a little tutorial for a Wacky Sack that looks super fun! We’ll be making those soon at our house!!

Pumpkin Topiary

October 19, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 14 Comments

I loved the idea of a pumpkin topiary so I kept an eye out for a big urn for a little price. I was lucky enough to find this one for $1 at a garage sale a couple weekends ago. The funny thing is I was carrying around a plant so another garage saler (don’t you love how I make up words) pointed it out to me. How nice is that! Thank you mystery lady!

Naturally, I was not a big fan of the strange tan/green motif so I painted the creases with brown to add some dimension and then went over the whole thing with a couple of coats of heirloom white.

Then, it was off to the pumpkin patch for those three perfect pumpkin stackers. The bottom pumpkin was just the right size and the owners goat had chewed off the stem so it was perfect! I broke the middle one’s stem off with my bare hands only to have a giant ear wig jump out at me. Those things creep me out!!! I promptly killed it and proceeded with the stacking.

I really liked the natural look, so I attached a pack of silk leaves from the Dollar Tree with double sided sticky tape and added a raffia bow. you could use piles of real leaves if you are lucky enough to have them. Our trees have not started shedding quite yet.

And here she is in all her harvest glory! I love my cute little pumpkin topiary! Still haven’t gotten my Halloween decorations out. πŸ™‚ he he

I found the original inspiration idea from Grams via Ucreate.

I know, the palm tree welcome mat has got to go. I didn’t sweep, because hey it’s fall. Leaves on the porch is how it is supposed to be. And yes, that is sidewalk chalk on the porch. The rain can’t seem to reach it to wash it away. My little artist is “set in stone.”

Oh dear, it is 10:30 AM and I just heard a stool being dragged and “MMM cake, mmmm brownies!” coming from the kitchen. The pan of brownies I left on the counter top are in danger!

**Update:this is what I found in the kitchen.

At least he used a spoon. Ha! You’re caught!

Feature Friday-Joys of Home

October 16, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 6 Comments

I am so pleased to present today’s Feature Friday Joys of Home. I cannot disclose the amount of time I spent on Joy’s blog preparing for this post, while my poor husband and child were ignored. There is just that much good stuff! I couldn’t help myself! I am so excited to share, but we must first get to know this amazing woman. Here we go with the one minute interview…

What is your favorite crafting tool or secret weapon?
I suppose my readers would say the obvious choice would be any type of paint. I love to transform almost anything with paint. My husband would say it’s my nail gun. However he loves it too, so I rarely get to use it. And I would have to say that my favorite tool/secret weapon is a tie between the internet and magazines. I get a lot of inspiration for my many projects from those two sources. Maybe too much inspiration since I have a to-do list about a mile long!

What is your favorite room in the house and why?
My favorite room would have to be my living room. Oh there are so many reasons why I love this room. It has five windows on one wall and three are over six feet tall and four feet wide so there’s always plenty of sunlight. With the exception of the flooring, we’ve redesigned and given every surface a makeover, including the placement and style of the windows. We’ve designed and added the moldings. I aged the beam on the ceiling using paint (and faced my fear of heights at the same time). It contains my suitcase stack and several pieces of furniture that we designed and built. And perhaps most of all, it’s the room where most of our favorite family memories have been made.

What is your all time favorite thrift store find?
This is a hard question since the majority of my home has come from the thrift store! I’m going to take the easy way out and say that my favorite thrift find is the latest one I’ve brought home, especially if it inspires me to make some changes in my home.

What is your favorite color of toe nail polish?
Oh dear! True confessions: I really don’t like the look of my toes, so I don’t wear polish. I would have to say that that’s one of the few spots where paint won’t make an improvement.

Now for the unveiling…my Joys of Home crush started with this candy dish.
Joy is asked to bring after dinner mints to a gathering and she shows up with this Over the Top Candy Dish. Talk about rocking the lame assignment!

This next post is a lesson I SOOO need! I have a really silly fear of color. I always end up doing everything in neutrals because they transcend through time and will be good when we sell the house. Do we have any plans of selling? No, so why does this thought creep in to my head when re-doing any room in my house? Silly. Let Joy help you with easing in to those pops of color.

I love this White pumpkin display and I covet (yes covet, don’t judge me) those suitcases. I can’t even find one good one. That is because they are all in Joy’s living room. Hoarder. πŸ˜‰

I caught on to the whole DIY moss ball craze going around, but never thought to do Decorative leaf balls. Aren’t they festive! Love.

You know how I love a nice filled vase. This Spider Hurricane makes my Halloween loving heart smile!
Pumpkin trifecta. There is just no other way to describe it! This post will raise you up!
It’s time to start thinking about Thanksgiving crafts. How about this Be Thankful sign? And as a side note, that is her coffee table. Yep, a green door. So cute!

Joy shares some of her Thanksgiving decor. I am not usually a big fan of turkeys, but these shelves make me swoon!

Those candlesticks, old ballistrade from her neighbors porch. Fabulous! used for the legs of her coffee table too!
I did a happy dance when I found some skeleton keys at a garage sale recently. Again Joy is hoarding. Doorknobs and keys and instruments oh my! Thou shalt not covet…I am loving the starfish with the salt! Joy shares some fantastic Candle decor ideas. How many things can you think to decorate a candle with.

Keys please! If you can’t find some, make some. You will die when you see the before!
All of you avid reader know my love for laundry and anything decor related for the laundry room. Dryer sheet storage, because why not! Hmm. I think I may have a box like that. πŸ™‚
Well folks, we are unfortunately out of time! It is after 11 and past my bedtime. Go check out Joy and trust me, do it when you have some major time to spend. It’s addicting!

Great ideas and tips Joy! You are now entered in the Hall of Fame as Tipster of the week!

Feature Friday-Everyday Mom Ideas

October 9, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 5 Comments

Today’s Feature Friday is Julia from

I found Julia through a comment here on A Little Tipsy and immediately fell in love with her blog. She has such creative ideas and the digital scrapbooking designs, oh all the wonderful FREE digiscrap elements. But, we will of course get to that a little later! First let’s get to know our friend Julia a little better with the one-minute interview:
  • What is your favorite crafting tool or secret weapon? That would be paint shop pro. I do just about everything with it. From family home evening handouts to digital website design. Just about any scrapbooking program can be used in a wide range of crafts.
  • If you were a super hero what would you want your super power to be? Instead of wonder woman I would pick Miss congeniality woman… I would be able to influence everyone around me with good and positive feelings and I would also be able to avoid awkward situations. I think good social skill is an incredible power to have. But also one that I lack. I seem to get myself into a lot of foot in mouth situations. I should be censored by a panel before I speak. Social situations are not my forte.
  • What is your favorite free digiscrap resource besides your cute freebies? www.digiscrapdepot.com It well organized and FREE!
  • What is your favorite fall activity with the kids? Halloween Crafts! I have two little boys and they think bloody and scary craft are the best. Right now we have been making Paper Mache Body Parts out of card board boxes. And man are they gruesome!
  • If they were making a movie of your life story, which actress would you want to play you? A lot of my favorite actresses are way to short to play my 5 foot 10 inch self but I would probably have to pick Kate Winslet. I think she is fierce but can be fun and romantic. Plus, She is not stick thin and doesn’t want to be. I couldn’t have some size 2 woman play me, it would just feel wrong with me being a size 14 and all. But if any one asks I’m a size 12 okay!

Let’s start out with some thing for the kids. She has a free placemat coloring printable. It is adorable and how fun would it be to make it life size, laminate it, and use it as a real place mat where the kiddos can color it over and over each day while they wait for dinner! Or you could update one each day to say what is on the menu. Too fun!
And now a little craft for the adults. Wanna make some easy paper stars? She’ll give you a tutorial so you can get them started early for the holidays. Or heck, use them for what you will they are dang cute and budget friendly!

Not only does she design her own scrapbooking supplies, she paints her own wall murals!! Hello, this is amazing! Ok, so here’s the kicker, she designs digital scrapbooking supplies and let’s us use them FOR FREE! I feel the love, I really do! I mean check out her latest design. Too, too cute!

And last but not least, a handy dandy list of home cleaning tricks.

Great tips Julia! You are now entered in the Hall of Fame as tipster of the week!
