YW Birthday/Christmas Gift Ideas

November 23, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 14 Comments

Grandma (one of our readers, sorry I don’t know your real name.) wanted to know some ideas for birthday gifts for the Young Women for next year. Here are a few of the gifts we have done while I have been in the Presidency.

Last year for Christmas we gave them a little standing flip book with a thought for each week of the year.

Beaded bookmarks with “Be an Example” theme charm to encourage them to read their scriptures 5 minutes a day. You could do them with next year’s theme.

We recently had Elaine S. Dalton, General Young Women President, come speak at a fireside and we had encouraged all the girls to have the new Virtue value in their Personal Progress done. To celebrate those who did, and encourage those others to keep working we gave them a gold virtue charm to add to their bookmarks.

For Christmas this year, we are giving them the word “Courage” in vinyl lettering to put on their mirrors and remind them of this years theme.

For birthdays next year, we are giving fun colorful socks with a thought about walking in the footsteps of Christ. (edit: see the saying and actual socks we used here)

I hope these ideas help! Also, please feel free to share ideas you have in the comments!

Dress Up a Brown Bag for a Gift

July 27, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

This is such a simple idea which is what makes it so great. All you need to make this cute bag is a brown paper sack and a scrap of scrapbook paper. My friend got this at her baby shower and I thought it was so smart. Sorry it is so hard to see, but it has a piece of cute blue baby paper the plain brown bag.

It would be so easy to have a stash of brown bags and then just personalize them with scrapbook paper based on the occasion, birthday, baby or bridal shower, etc. Love it. (Thanks Tami!)

Gardening Gift Wrap

May 9, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 4 Comments

My mom really wanted this gardening book for Mother’s Day. A surprise since my Dad did all of the gardening up until now. But, what mama wants, mama gets. We had a few other things for her, but she wanted this early so she could use it to plant today. Though she knew what she was getting and knew she was getting it at a family dinner on Friday night I could not just hand her the book. So I grabbed some ribbon and made one of those flower pens. (Luckily, we made little bouquets of them with our Young Women for their moms so I had all the supplies!)

My Mom loves to underline interesting parts in books so a pen was a natural addition. I included a flower card that matched the flower on the pen and Voila, a garden themed wrap. Now I just need to decide how to wrap the rest of her gifts for tomorrow night!

Gift Idea for Volunteer Temple Babysitting

May 4, 2009 By Michelle Barneck 1 Comment

I am over the Beehives in my LDS ward and for a Personal Progress experience they can babysit for people attending the temple for free. I have a sweet girl from my class, Sarah, who has done babysat for free at least four times (which I know is more than she needs to complete the project). We try to call her for paid jobs too, but it only seems to work out when we are going to the temple.

We offer to pay her every time, but she will never take it. I am so thankful for her service and wanted her to know that I appreciated it without taking away from her service experience. I figured a small gift with a good message would be a good way to show my appreciation.

I went to Deseret Book because I knew they had these cute chapsticks for under $2. They have them with all different messages. This one is the mutual theme for this year 1 Timothy 4:12.

I thought this silver YW necklace was cute and it was only $5.95!

I wrapped them up in a bag with a thank you card telling her how she was an example of the believers in charity (like in the theme). I had every thing for the bag on hand: a clear treat bag, ribbon and leftover easter ribbon filler.

I even had some bonus points at Deseret book so the whole thing only ended up costing $6. Not bad for $50 worth of babysitting!
