As many of you know, I adore Valentine's decor. I loved my Valentine Display from last year, but wanted to change it a bit to freshen it up for this year. I was excited that our Point of View theme for January was "Love!" It was the perfect chance to work on my new Valentine Display!

Valentine Crafts: Framed Heart Art

I needed a little something for my Valentine's shelf. We whipped up this heart art that is a fun Valentine craft for the kids while doubling as a piece of home decor.

Valentine Crafts: Framed Heart Art

Supplies:

Paper or cardstock

Scissors

Stapler

White glue

Plate

8x10 frame

1. Cut paper in to strips (about 4 inch x 1/2 inch).

2. Make in to hearts by putting two strips together, stapling the top, pulling the bottom out and around to make a heart shape and stapling the bottom. We alternated having the pattern on the outside and inside of the hearts.

3. Dip the edge of the heart in white glue.

4. Place heart on your piece of cardstock cut to fit your frame. Repeat until you have your desired look.

5. Take glass out of frame and put your Valentine craft in.

Display your Valentine Crafts for all to see! My little guy is so proud to have something he helped with displayed so prominently in our front room.

Valentines Recipe: Red Velvet Waffles

If you've been with us a while, you are probably aware of my love of themey food. I saw this red velvet crepe recipe on Pinterest and loved it, but I'm kinda lazy and thought it was made with a cake mix (I know, blasphemy for some of you). Not so. So I decided to take things in to my own hands and make a Valentine's recipe using a red velvet cake mix. Oh yes, I did.

Valentines Recipe {Red Velvet Waffles}

How you do it depends on how you want it. We made a breakfast version and a dessert version.

Dessert Waffle (Soft & cake like)

Mix up the cake mix according to package directions and pour in to waffle maker. Cook as usual. It comes out as a waffle shaped piece of cake in a few minutes! Tops with Strawberries and whipped cream or chocolate sauce or frosting and ice cream. Whatever you love!

Breakfast Waffle (Waffle like: crunchy outside with cake inside)

Mix up Bisquick and Cake mix separately according to package directions.

Mix together 1 part prepared cake batter to 4 parts Bisquick batter. (We did 1 cup Bisquick to 1/4 cup cake mix)

Pour in Waffle Maker and cook as usual.

We topped ours with homemade Strawberry jam (warmed to a syrupy state) and whipped cream. Daddy likes a little...

But, mommy likes a LOT!

MMmmm!

We have a small family, so after making our breakfast style waffles I poured the rest of the batter into a square pan and baked it up as a cake for later that night.

Laundry Room: Three Projects Under $5

This is the last of the laundry room series. I have three easy projects done for under $5!

Painted Bottles

First, see those bottles in the right corner? Painted. The bluish one was a glass chili sauce bottle with which I used latex paint. The white one is a plastic milk bottle with which I used acrylic. Just pour the paint in, slowly rotate the bottles so the paint coats the entire inside and rotate to rest on a different side every 15 minutes or so for the first hour and a half so the paint doesn't all slide down to one side. I planned to have a bigger collection, but am still on the search for shapes I love.

Total cost: FREE everything on hand

In this before pic, you can see the clear milk bottle as well as the sea foam thrift store tissue holder we used for our next project...

Fabric Softener Cover

There is something about a bright red box that does not excite me in my new room. The fabric softener sheets needed a new home. Enter the $1 tissue holder, a can of brown spray paint, Martha Stewart Arabesque stencil and white acrylic paint and bam. Lovely new home for my static fighting heroes.

Total Cost: $1 for tissue holder, everything else on hand

Hook Board with Buckets

I wanted a place to house all those odds and ends like buttons, coins and other pocket contents that inevitably end up strewn about the counter. Garage sale board+few coats of white acrylic paint+sanding edges+spray painted Valentine buckets from Target $ section=clutter elimination.

Total cost: $4 ($2 buckets, $2 board, everything else on hand)

DIY Laundry Room

I decided that this year was going to be the year I focus more on room makeovers. Get all the half done rooms in to the visions of them I have in my head. I've mapped out a plan and if all goes accordingly, by the end of the year I'll have re-done seven areas in my home. Here's to making it happen!

Let's start with the laundry room. There are few things that please me more than a beautiful, organized place even if it is in a corner that no one (except all of you of course) will see and a room strictly used for chores. After all, the laundry room is "loads of fun." Well, it is now!

DIY Laundry Room

But, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I have wanted this room done for a long time. Since we moved in 6 1/2 years ago actually. I ripped down the hideous geese wallpaper border soon after moving in. So quickly in fact, that no pictures remain of it. I do have this before shot where you get a glimpse of where the border was as it left a stripe on the peach and gray striped wallpaper. Enough to make you shudder a little.

And now a sigh of relief as the poor room is taken out of its misery.

We still have cabinets to paint, but something about 30 degree weather and painting in the garage just isn't right. They'll be getting a clean coat of white as soon as weather permits. So in Utah, probably May. ;) Let's focus on the positive.

We already talked about paint and stenciling. (see how to stencil patterns)

Today we'll be doing a tour of the details and decor. I already had this shelf and hanging area. It just got a good wipe down.

I had an awesomely placed outlet to work around, but thanks to Ikea Lack shelves, it was no problem. I added a tray and cover for my fabric softener sheets on the dryer.

On the small shelf, I put together a Laundry stain removal cheat sheet and a bar of Fels-Naptha. It is supposed to be great at removing stains, just rub over the stain and wash.

I love the nostalgic feel of using an actual bar though I thought it was white when I bought it. I suppose it adds a pop of color. I got the soap dish for $4 on clearance at my local Smith's marketplace.

The larger shelf holds a jar of clothes pins (again for nostalgia sake) and a jar of Oxiclean. The basket is for socks that have no mates. After each day of laundry I check it to see if any of the mates have appeared. The shelf also holds a piece of white coral and some painted jars that we'll talk more about tomorrow (see pic above).

Back by the door is a hook board holding buckets for buttons, coins and other small items from pockets. On the ledge is a magnet for safety pins for our sock system. That leaves the perfect space on our counter for a laundry basket.

The last spot on our tour is the ceiling. I had every intention of replacing this light, but then I took a good look at it while cleaning it off and decided I actually quite like the frosty, dainty little thing, so for now it stays.

How to Stencil Patterns {Cutting Edge Stencil Giveaway!}

I am in love...with stencils. I'm sure you've seen the big beautiful stencil patterns done by Stacy and Jamielyn. I have done stenciling on a small scale (remember my stencil frosted mirror), but never a wall. When Cutting Edge Stencils contacted me, I knew just where I wanted to try it. I have been dying to re-do my laundry room and I knew a stencil pattern would be perfection! I totally have a crush on my new wall.

To see the full impact you must see the before...

I know the bare white wall with wallpaper glue and dryer lint is highly desired, but I was ready for a change. I gave the walls a good scrub down with DIF to get the adhesive off and then wiped it down once more with water to make sure it was clean and would not make the paint crackle.

Then, they got a couple of coats of Pool Blue Glidden Paint. I had a free trial quart can and just had to buy a titch more. Be prepared to move the washer and dryer back and forth a gazillion times! Let the base coat dry at least 24 hours before stenciling on it.

How to Stencil Patterns

Supplies:

Stencil (mine was the Fuji Allover)
Latex or acrylic paints
Small Dense Foam Roller with rounded ends, stencil brushes
Large styrofoam plates
Paper Towels
Low tack painter’s tape, spray adhesive (optional)
Cutting Edge Stencil Level (optional)
Baby Wipes
Q-tips

It's a good idea to practice your stencil to make sure you like your color combo and have the technique down before you start on the actual wall.

Be sure to tape off any outlets, ceiling or cupboards you want to protect.

Tape your stencil in place using painters tape making sure it is level (Cutting Edge Stencils come with a cool level that clips right on to the stencil. You can use spray adhesive as well if you like.

Pour some paint on your plate, coat the roller evenly and roll on the paper towels to get most of the paint off so it almost looks dry. Roll lightly over the stencil until you reach the desired effect. If you push too hard the paint will leak under the edges more. Be careful not to roll over the outside edges of the stencil.

Carefully remove the stencil and line it up with the previous pattern to go again. I had some obstacles like outlets and counter corners to work around. Sometimes you can't get the stencil perfectly flat, but just do your best to hold it flat in small sections for these tricky areas.

Once you have the whole thing tackled you can go back around the edges with the smaller stencil provided to get closer to the edges.

Mine got a little messy around the edges in parts. You can wipe big oops with baby wipes to clean up quickly. For smaller clean up I used q-tips and both white and blue paint for touch ups.

I am thrilled with my first stenciled wall! My mind is going crazy thinking of all the other things I can stencil! You can see a sneak peek in the photo below. Stay tuned for the Laundry room reveal in its entirety next week!

Lunch Menu

As a continued organization effort, I decided to make a monthly lunch menu. I was sick of standing in front of the fridge wondering what to serve up to the munchkins or worse asking what they wanted for a response full of "no, no, no thanks, no." I decided that to cut out the guess work, have a more balanced diet, and prep the kiddos for having a set menu at school having a monthly menu would be a great idea.

We've only done it for three days, but so far it is a total success. I know exactly what to make and the kids don't argue.

I just wrote down all the things I could think of in four categories: entree, side, vegetable, and fruit. If I thought of something we did not have at the time, I wrote it on the grocery list.

Once I had our list, I printed out a calendar and got to work filling it with a menu. If the entree had tomato sauce or something vegetable like I would pair it with a fruit. I made sure that each day we had at least one fruit or vegetable. I realize it is not the healthiest menu on the planet, but I'm feeding a 4 year old and a one year old. They aren't going to happily eat swiss chard.

I had just gone grocery shopping, so I just put the things on the shopping list at the end of the month. Easy peasy, I had most everything on hand and we aren't eating the same thing twice!

Football Field Dip

There are two things I love about the super bowl: the commercials and the party food. Mmmm, I love me some guacamole, salami roll ups, cheese ball, you name it. A few years back I decided to combine our love of seven layer dip with the sport of the season and came up with this Football Field Dip.

Football Field Chip Dip

3 Avocados from Mexico
Onion Powder
Garlic Salt
1 can Taco Bell Fat Free refried beans
1/2 Taco Seasoning Packet
1 Small Tub Sour Cream

Spread beans in the bottom of a small rectangular pyrex dish (2.75 qt about 7 in x 9in). Take a scoop of sour cream and put it in a ziploc bag for later. Mix the remaining sour cream with the 1/2 packet of taco seasoning. Spread this over the beans. Next peel the avocados into a bowl and smash with 3 dashes of garlic salt and 3 dashes of onion powder. Spread this over the sour cream layer covering completely. This is your football field.

Now, take the sour cream you put in the ziploc and snip a little hole in the corner of the bag. Grab like a frosting bag and line the field.

Super glue toothpicks together to make goal posts.

Oh and guess what, we love this dip so much I entered it in a contest. I know right? I am not usually the recipe contest type, but I had a good feeling about this one...

Make Fabric Necklace

With the New Year Clean up and Organize fest I have been doing a bit of stash busting. I'm not sure who's happier about it, me or my husband. I had a bit of a collection starting of things I had plans for. You guys know all about that, right? Tell me I'm not the only one. Anyway, I've seen so many cute fabric necklaces and decided to give it a go with my stash.

I like to call her Annabelle.

Isn't she fun?! Chunkiness, bold colors/pattern and hardware all in one necklace. Ya, you're pretty much going to die when you see how easy it is!

Make Fabric Necklace

Supplies:

Fabric D ring belt

(don't have one, skip down to the bottom to make one)

Big Wooden Beads

Scissors

Cut a slit through the back side of the fabric on the belt jut below the d ring seam. Tie a knot in the opposite end of the belt where you want the beads to stop. Slide a bead in to the fabric tube through the slit all the way down to the knot. Twist your fabric and tie a knot after the bead. Add another bead and tie another knot. Continue until you have your desired look.

Fasten around your neck with the D rings. It is adjustable so you can make it the length you need with your current outfit.

Did you ever think it could be so easy to make a fabric necklace?!

No belt?

Just sew a fabric tube about 1.5 inches wide. Sew one end shut and fold the other end over a pair of D rings and sew. If you put the beads in before you sew one of the ends you won't have to cut a slit.

Hi everyone, I'm Angie and I'm really excited to be guest posting for Michelle!

I blog over at Burton Avenue where I love to share simple and inexpensive craft projects. I especially love all things vinyl! I have been blogging almost 4 years, but never really liked sharing craft projects on our family blog. So, earlier this year, Burton Avenue began.

I have been married for 10 years and we have 6 cute little kiddies (9 years and under). They keep me busy! I love blogging because it gives me a chance to take a break from the day to day tasks of being a mom and keeps my creative juices flowing.

With only a week between Christmas and the new year, there isn't much time left to decorate for a New Year's Eve bash. No worries, because I've got a project that's quick and easy and is sure to add some pizazz to your party.

I'm going to show you how to make this cute balloon topiary.

Here is what you will need:

12 - Small Balloons (I used 5" balloons)

16" Dowel (painted to match your color scheme)

Styrofoam

Small Vase

Marbles, Shreds, or other Filler for the Vase

Foil Sheets (optional)

Star Sprays (optional)

First, inflate the balloons (try to make them the same size). Tie the necks of two balloons together and repeat until you have six groups.

Next, place one group over another group. Lock the two together by twisting the necks around each other.

Repeat with a third group, there should now be six balloons in this cluster. Do the same with remaining groups, so you end up with two big clusters (each with 6 balloons).

Now, put the two clusters together and twist the necks of a couple balloons around each other. You will end up with a ball that looks like this. You can move the balloons around until the colors and shape look good. I hope that all made sense (it's way easier than it sounds).

Set that aside for a bit and let's start on the base. Stick your dowel into a piece of styrofoam and place it in the bottom of your vase. You may need to glue it down to keep it from tipping. Add marbles or other decorative items to fill the vase.

Place the top of the dowel in the center of your balloon cluster. You don't need to glue it, just twist a couple of balloons around it to keep it in place.

It's cute and simple like this, but I like to dress it up a bit more. Tuck some ribbon into the center of the cluster and wrap it loosely around the dowel a few times. Tie down the other end with another piece of ribbon and then make a bow.

Cut 5-6" squares from foil sheets or tissue paper and stick between the balloons. Repeat all over the ball and fluff until it looks good.

Finally, for some more color, add a cute star spray to the base.

Isn't it fun and festive?

And, since balloons come in so many different colors, you can make a topiary to match any party decor!

Make a Tree Topper with A Law Student's Journey

Happy Holidays and thank you Michelle for having me over to guest blogging today! I'm Kitty from A Law Student's Journey . I'm a 2nd year law student, who blogs about crafting my way through law school. A few weeks into my first year, I realized I need an outlet that could completely take my mind off school...and I decided on blogging!

Today, I wanted to share a little holiday craft for your Christmas tree! I worked on this little Wire Tree Topper to share with you all!

The fun part is- you can customize it and hang whatever you'd like from your topper- a wire monogram for your family, a star, a prized ornament or possibly an elf on the shelf (for those of you who have started that family tradition)

Make a Tree Topper

This works great with in thick wire. I had some laying around the house from other crafts, but you can pick some up at a craft store, hardware store, or use a wire hanger!

You'll want to first make a long skinny wire cone shape to fit on the top branch of your tree. You can work with it to fit your tree particularly, but these are a pretty universal design to balance on the top of your tree!

I used pliers to bend it into the cone shape, but you can also find a cone shape around your house, and bent it around for a more symmetrical design.

I always loop the bottom of my wire first, no need for anyone to be cut on the ends!

Then top it off with a hook. That way you can hang your designs from it!

Or if you'd rather, make a swirl, and you are able to stick photos, paper projects, or make a larger swirl and cut a star out of paper, and let your children decorate it!

You can use the spare wire to create other designs- spell out an inspirational Christmas word like "hope" or "faith" or you can make a monogram for your family!

DIY Under $5: Holiday Display Ideas

I wanted a little something different for my shelf this year. Using only things I already had (either dollar store, thrift store, or given to me) I created this...

It incorporates a few different holiday display ideas.

I love this printable from Eighteen25 and it is perfect to tie the colors in my stockings that hang on the fireplace to the right.

All the ornaments and silver bells are from Dollar Tree and the greenery is pieces that have fallen from my artificial Christmas tree. How's that for re-use?

I am thinking a spruce garland and some muted red bows on the silver candlestick and the goblet would be just the right touch. All in all I am pleased with how it turned out! Not bad for free right?!

HANDmade Christmas Tree

HeLlO hElLo A Little Tipsy readers!!! I am Angela, the voice behind Love Sweet Love, and I am super-duper EcStAtIc to be here doing a guest post for the fantastic Michelle today! I first found Michelle's blog through her DIY under $5 linky party and just fell in love with her cute, fun personality and blog!

A Little Tipsy is one of my favorite daily reads so it was a HUGE honor to have Michelle ask me to be here today!! Eeeeek!!

I use my little corner of the blogging universe to share my creative ideas that involve easy DIY projects for the home, craft ideas for kids, thrift store makeovers like this and this, organization ideas, and holiday decorating (the reason I started blogging!). My life is over-flowing with Sweet Love and I needed a place to share it!!

Being that I link up to Michelle's DIY under $5 linky party religiously every Wednesday-what can I say I LOVE finding ways to make things pretty on the cheap!- I thought I would share a quick, fun, cute idea for a Christmas gift for the grandparents that you can get those cute kiddos to help with and that'll cost ya less than a Lincoln!

HANDmade Christmas Tree:

I love creating. I LOVE spending time with my 2 littles (4 & 2 years old). They love painting. Ergo perfect Christmas activity! So let's go!

Supplies:
-8x10 canvas ($3.99 for pack of 2 from Hobby Lobby. I used a 40% off coupon so they were $2.40 which means they cost $1.20 a piece-awesome!)
-foam brush
-Green paint-for tree
-assorted paint colors-for ornaments
-brown paint-for tree trunk if you want one :)
-Star sticker
-red paint pen
-ribbon (optional)
-cute little hands you could hold forever (mandatory)

Steps:
1.paint both of their hands green

2. Place their hands-one at a time-down onto the canvas. My tree has 3 layers...my 4 year olds' hands are the bottom *branches*, my 2 year olds' hands are the middle *branches* and then I did one of my 2 year olds' handprints for the top of the tree, overlapping handprints as we went.

3. Then have them dip their fingers in different colored paints and place them on the tree to make ornaments.
3.5 Try not to be controlling and tell them where it looks *good* to put another ornament or what colors to use and let them have fun and decorate the tree as they want to!! (SOOOO hard for me! haha!)

4. Place a sparkly silver (or any color you want!) foam sticker on the top!

5. I wanted to add some meaning to our gift, so I included a quote from one of our favorite Christmas movies-How the Grinch Stole Christmas that used the words 'HANDS' to tie in the handprints. I just used a red paint pen to write it on.

"Christmas day is in our grasp so long as we have hands to clasp."-Dr. Seuss

6. And just because I have to have a little embellishment on anything I do :), I added a few bows I tied from some red ribbon I had on hand and used a glue dot to attach them to the canvas.

7. When I was putting my red ribbon away, my jar of green ribbon was sitting right next to it, and this ric rac was just begging me to use it, so I obliged her.

Because there was already a lot going on on the front, and I didn't want to distract from the kids work of art, I used the ric rac on the top and outer sides of the canvas and along the bottom of the quote.

I think it frames the picture nicely!

8. Lastly I tied a ribbon around the front of the canvas-for gift giving purposes :)-and was done!

Christmas Card Ideas with My Insanity

Hello, my Tipsy friends (not drunk, right?)! My name is Kendra, and while I may not be tipsy, I AM crazy--hence the name of my blog--My Insanity.

When Michelle and I talked about doing a blog swap this month, we thought it might be nice to pick our Top 5 holiday ideas to share. At the moment, I have Christmas cards on the brain pretty heavily--mainly because mine aren't done, yet! Each year, the Christmas card is a perfect opportunity to show the world how crazy I am, so today I am sharing with you my Top 5 most insane Holiday cards--not counting this year's--which is sure to be right up there!

Upon a Midnight Clear

In earlier years I've tried to hand make all of my cards, scrapbook-style. But as the years have progressed, and the recipient list has grown, it has become less realistic to do so. I've switched to more digital/some-assembly required, type cards. That means the insanity transfers to the photography and design of the cards. I was so excited to do this shoot last year since I had a little baby boy. There was a fair amount of photoshopping involved, as you can imagine with kids this age (notice the grumpy angel?), but I was enamored with the idea and the result. Home for the Holidays

This card was crazy for a few reasons. I combined the digital insanity with assembly. That Christmas was about everything homey! The Christmas cookie you see on the front, is actually one that I had decorated and photographed. It was a little tricky to get everything to line up just right.

I used an exacto knife to cut out lift-up flaps on the windows and door. Then that card was glued on top of the folded card, and my exacto cut windows revealed photos of members of our family peeking out the window or welcoming you in our front door.

The inside featured some photos of our family around the fireplace, looking cozy, and being goofy. By the silly one you read "Oh there's no place like home for the holidays!", and our main greeting says "Wishing you all the comforts of home this holiday season!"

Partridge in a Pear Tree

At first glance, it looks just like a cute digital photo card using recolored elements by Rhonna Farrer @ 2peas. But wait….

…there is more! The card is actually made of two postcards. One oversized, and one standard sized. The small postcard (where you see the graphic of the bird), lifts up to reveal the accordion fold insert, glued at the other end over half of the large post card.

For the insert, I used 11 x 17 paper (that I had had on hand for the last 8 years), and had two inserts printed/per sheet. If you can’t read, it, here is what it says (with lots of pictures to illustrate the lyrics):

The Year 2008

(To the tune of the 12 days of Christmas)
The year 2008, brought the H---- family:
12 weeks of preschool
11 months of insanity (with the URL to my blog)
10 pounds of Tessa
9 years of marriage
8 days of paintball
7 gourmet meals
6 teeth-a-missing
5 years of work (with my husband’s company)
4 days on a boat (Lake Powell)
3 birthday parties (for the kids)
2 camping trips
and our new home in Laveen.
I liked that the card tied in with my Christmas theme (that no one really knows about, but it makes me happy). But I also liked that I was able to give a bit of news, without writing a formal newsletter. In recent years, I have been directing people to our family blog for an update, rather than writing a lengthy letter.

2004
(Blue Snowflake Newspaper)

2004 was a particularly newsy year! New home, new baby, etc. And it was in the P.B.E. (pre-blogging era), so I felt a newsletter would be appropriate. Only ours was a full blown newspaper--complete with engagements, crossword puzzles, sports and arts sections.

I had a great time writing it and sharing with family and friends. Assembly was easy, but composing the whole thing was a little crazy.

The Beginning of the Insanity!

I was pregnant with my first child and quite sick for several months. I spent way too much time watch Martha Stewart and other crafty people on TV, while I tried really hard not to puke. For some reason this idea from the Martha Stewart magazine, seemed doable and so clever.

Pop-up Christmas cards!

They are very clever, and doable if you want to make a few, but I am sad to say, that most of these never got sent, because with all of the embossing and assembly, I never completed enough to send to everyone on my list. I still love the concept! Maybe I'll try them again with the kids sometime...in limited quantities.

There are even more insane Christmas cards on my blog, and the one I am currently working on will be no exception. So tell me, am I the only crazy one? Or do you send crazy Christmas cards, too?

Superhero Squad Party Activities

Of course you need some great superhero squad training activities and we had no shortage. Planning and having everything prepared ahead is key to keeping things rolling smoothly. We had 10 different superhero training camp activities! Each one corresponded with a power from a favorite super hero.

1. Decorate your cape and mask.

We used a Walmart cape and mask set (about $5). They come in black, blue, red and green. Target has a cape with a wrap around front with muscles (about $5).
Decorate with foam letters. I had each child's name ready to go, organized in an ice tray to make things fast and easy. All they had to do was peel and stick. No searching for letters or fighting over colors.

2. Web Shooting

Spraying silly string on villains from coloring books hung on a plastic tablecloth to protect walls and floor. We hung ours on the sliding glass door, hidden behind the vertical blinds until we were ready to play.

3. Flight Training

Playing Space Pop where you levitate to pop bubbles. A game from Kinect Adventures on the Xbox 360.

4. Bat Cave

Crawling in to the cave to get a glowing power bracelet.
Cover table and chairs with black plastic table cloths and hang strips of streamers from the ceiling (aka bottom of table). Tape glow stick bracelets between the streamers.

5. X-ray Vision

Peek behind the brick wall and try to remember all the items behind it.

6. Super Strength

Pop balloons by squeezing, stomping or sitting on them.

7. Shield Throwing

Throwing a frisbee to explode a tower of cups.
Transform a dollar store frisbee in to a shield with vinyl or glued card stock.

8. Final Exam

Lifting a "barbell" to test their superpowers.
Use quick dry craft glue and spray paint to transform two dollar store balls and a rain stick into a barbell. You can also use a dowel and two styrofoam balls, but they are pricey for my taste.

9. Receive superhero name and official training certificate.

Certificate designed using one of Microsoft's free certificate templates.

10. VIP visitors

Batman and Robin (cute high school students I met at a Halloween party and hired to come) signed their certificates and helped the kids find their signature superhero pose.

Super Hero Squad Party Decor

Vinyl and Cardstock shapes (boom, pow, masks, shields, etc) cut using craft cutter to spread around

Downstairs:

Happy Birthday Banner using awesome super hero head shots from artist Michael Myers. Print the art and letters and hang from giant ric rac with tiny clothes pins covered with cardstock lightning bolts.
Bat Cave-Cover table with black plastic table cloths and dangle streamers inside. I added chairs and toys to make it look more bumpy, like a cave.

The Super Hero Squad Invite

At our house it is all about the boys, so amid the collection of transformers and tools strewn about it was no surprise that my four year old asked for a super hero party. Honestly, I could not have been happier with his choice. There are so many fun avenues to explore with this theme.

We'll be sharing a whole series of posts on how to throw your own super hero squad party so stay tuned for all the how-to details on decor, activities, food and more. For now, let's talk invites!

Invites

The invitation really sets the tone for the party. It not only explains the details for the upcoming event, it is the guests first introduction to the theme. Trust me on this one and go with paper invites rather than online. It is more personal and your attendance will double. The only kids that did not show up this year were the ones with email or phone invites. Crazy!

We went with a vintage superman comic feel for our invite, keeping the design simple, but fun. I printed them on 4x6 photo cards. The invites were designed by the fabulous Key Lime Digital Designs and Kendra made a blank template of the invite just for you to download FREE!

DIY Under $5: Make Stockings

Last year, right before Christmas I realized that with the birth of our second son in November we were short one stocking. That of course wouldn't do, so I decided to make stockings. I always loved the look of cable knit stockings so I decided to make stockings out of old sweaters. Lucky for me it is most delightfully simple.

I purchased sweaters at the thrift store, but you could use some you own if you like the colors.

Turn the sweater inside out and use the finished bottom of the sweater as the top opening of your stocking.
Trace the shape of an old stocking on to the sweater with a sharpie.
Cut out the shape and sew the edges together with a sewing machine.

This is one of the few sewing projects I have done completely on my own. Trust me it is so easy to make stockings!

What in the heck is a Halftee?

Glad you asked. I wondered the same thing when Halftee contacted me to see if I would like to try out their shirts. Why would I want half a shirt, I thought. I was a skeptic. I didn't get it, but admittedly I am now a believer.

I remembered a friend saying she loved halftees, especially under dresses. Ok, I thought. I'll be nice and give it a whirl. Um, love. No, really. I will not go back! I wore one under a dress Sunday and loved it so much I wanted to wear it again on Tuesday, but it was in the laundry. Sad day. I wore one again this Sunday and loved it just as much!

I love to layer, but hate the fussing with the undershirt creeping up or unflattering seams under your dress. I also have an issue with overheating. You'd think I was effected by early onset menopause. The 3/4 sleeve have been perfect for me. Keeps me warm in the crisp air, but I don't get hot inside. It's great!

I want you to try it for yourself because really it's the only way to understand.

Neighbor Gift

I did this neighbor gift idea as a guest post as part of Swell Noel on Positively Splendid, but thought I would share here for anyone who missed it.

Last year we received a super cute neighbor gift; a box of tissues with a note that read "We tissue a Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year." I love creative themey gifts, so I ran with it and it will be my son's teacher gift this year.

I used the tissue box idea and added an array of health related items:

Wet wipes

Throat drops

Hand Sanitizer

Emergen-C packets

Chapstick

Added some snowflake filler aka pieces of silk flowers that look like snowflakes.

Then, I made some matching tags using wrapping paper, thin white cardboard, glue and glitter paint.

Cut out a snowflake. Glue it to the cardboard. Cover the white areas with glitter glue using the Martha Stewart fine tip top that screws right on to the paint bottle. Let it dry.

Cut out the snowflakes and write "We tissue a Merry Christmas..." and "and a healthy New Year!" on the back.

I love how it turned out and everything cost me under $10! Everything but the glitter paint, glue and cardboard was from Target. Easy as pie and perfect for an fun teacher or neighbor gift!

Here's to Mom!

Sometimes as a mom the holidays can be rough. Between class parties, trimming the tree, baking for the neighbors, sending Christmas cards, feeding the family and all the other joys of November/December it is hard to find time to hunt for the perfect gift for each loved one on your list.

With a 3 year old and 1 year old in tow it is nearly impossible to make it out of the mayhem of a department store unscathed. Not to mention, without them seeing any surprises that were headed under the tree.

Christmas DIY with Martha Stewart

With snow on the ground holiday creating is in full force and I am so excited to share this Christmas DIY project! The Christmas decor in my front room is a little more rustic so I thought a burlap Christmas tree would be the perfect addition.

Start out with some green burlap and Martha Stewart Water-resistant fabric stiffener.

Cut three circles from your burlap.

Make three cones out of cardstock by rolling it and hot gluing in place.

This is my ode to the road construction that's been going on around here.

Over a piece of wax paper, douse your circles in fabric stiffener spreading it evenly over the whole surface. I just used my hands so I could really get both sides completely drenched on both sides.

Lay your circles over the cones, helping them to ripple just how you want them. I put a rubber band lightly around the top to help them stay, but it really isn't necessary. Let them dry overnight.

Cut a sturdy cardboard tube (smaller and thicker than a paper towel roll, I think mine may have been the middle of a tiny wrapping paper roll?) to size. About half of what is shown here.

Cover in garden twine securing with hot glue along the way. Hot glue it to an upside down dessert plate.

Hot glue on your "circles" one by one. This can get tricky gluing where the ripples touch the next layer without having the glue show.

Grab your Martha Stewart Adhesive stencils.

Use the smallest snowflake and stencil all around the plate with Martha Stewart silver metallic paint.

I love that you can literally stencil ANYWHERE wtih these! Can you imagine trying to get in that tiny nook with a regulr stencil?! These were so easy to use I had all the snowflakes done in like 5 minutes!

I let the silver dry and then went back over and hand painted glitter paint over each snowflake.

Now here she stands, waiting patiently for the rest of the Christmas decor to join her on the day after Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving for Kids

In case you missed my guest post on A Glimpse Inside here's an idea to make it a fun Thanksgiving for Kids.

So here it is, my fun little turkey friend for the kiddos I have lovingly named...
Terrence the Turkey

He may be a little shy at first, but once you get to know him he is a total Butterball.
Supplies needed:
2" Styrofoam ballSerrated knifeBrown paintFoam Brush5 CrayonsPointy nosed penBrown cardstockYellow cardstockRed CardstockScissors

1. Slice off the bottom of the ball with a knife so it will sit flat.

2. Paint the ball brown.

3. In the center of the ball, push the pen in to the styrofoam about 1/2 inch to make a holes for the crayons. It has to be in the middle straight to the center or the crayons will tip the ball over.

4. Cut a body shape, beak, and gobble out of the cardstock.

5. Use your knife to make a slit in the styrofoam in front of the crayons to slide the body in.

6. Hot glue the beak on. Cut a tiny slit in the gobble and slide it on to the beak.

Find a nice place for him on the kids table...

or set him free to roam.

Without further adeiu, an ode to the Snowman.

I grew up with a little song called "Once There was a Snowman." Are you with me here?

Once there was a snowman, snowman, snowman.

Once there was a snowman tall, tall, tall.

In the sun he melted, melted, melted.

In the sun he melted small, small, small.

Lyrical genius right?

I saw the donuts with the carrot nose and thought an expansion on that idea would be the perfect homage to said song.

{Snowman on a Stick}

CAREFULLY (two donuts were harmed in the making of this snowman) skewer three powder donuts.

Cut a baby carrot in half and put in hole for nose. Add grape Nerd eyes and mouth to look like coal. You my need a dob of frosting or honey to hold them in place.

Add a green apple sour straw as a scarf. Break a toothpick in half and secure the scarf by poking the toothpick through the straw and in to the donut on the top where they overlap and on the bottom of the piece that hangs down the front. You can see the tiny dot of the toothpick on the bottom of the scarf.

Add two red jawbreakers as buttons.

Place in a treat bag with a bow and pass out to your friends.

They will have all sorts of fun singing the song and gobbling him up small, small, small.

Elmer's Craft & Tell Party {Giveaway}: How to Make a Christmas Tree

Check out what showed up on my doorstep the other day...

Ya, it was pretty much like a crafty Christmas morning. Elmer's sent me this insanely cool box (Did you see those cutouts, talk about great packaging!) filled to the brim with super cool Elmer's and X-acto products to try out and share. I called a few of my creative friends over for a little crafty get together.

Everybody got an awesome goody bag full of Elmer's crafty supplies like scissors, glue of all kinds (dots, runners, tacky, sticks), retractable x-acto knives, foam boards and self-healing cutting mats.

What GNO is complete without some delectible seasonal offerings?! This was a great excuse to whip up some Starbuck's Caramel Apple Spice, Nutella hot chocolate and pumpkin pie cake.

Everyone brought a roll of wrapping paper and we got to work on a little Pinterest inspired Christmas decor project.

{How to Make a Christmas Tree}

inspired by

Supplies:

Wrapping paper

Elmers Glue Spots

Elmers foam board (we used bifold, but you only need one side)

Scissors

Large Popsicle sticks

Heavy duty kitchen shears

Garden twine

Elmers tacky glue

Hot glue

Wood Star

Martha Stewart Glitter Paint

Buttons

Cut pieces of wrapping paper and roll them in to tubes securing with a few glue spots. Secure the glue spots to the foam board making the tubes progressively smaller.

Break a popsicle stick in half. Put the halves side by side cover in glue and wrap with twine.

Let the glue dry then trim off the ends of the sticks with the kitchen shears (I used Cutco). Glue in place under the tree.

Paint the star with a thick layer of glitter glue and let dry. Hot glue a button on the star and then glue in place at the top of the tree.

Use glue spots to secure button ornaments on the tree.

And that my friends is how to make a Christmas tree!

Mistle-toe

Time to spread a little holiday cheer...to your toes with a festive Mistle-toe pedicure!

p.s. I am well aware they are holly leaves, but mistletoe leaves are boring and I still wanted to use the cute name.

It's pretty simple. Take a little bit of this...

and turn it in to this!

Step-by-step Mistle-toe:

Red coat.

Two green dots.

Use a toothpick to pull the polish to make 6 points. Move the polish around with the toothpick as needed to make it look right.

Two more green dots.

Make points with toothpick.

Dip toothpick in white and make three dots to complete your mistle-toe. Add a single dot to all other nails.

Cover with a clear coat and BAM. Super jolly Mistle-toe pedi!

Tie Party

As many of you know my littlest guy just turned one. It's a tradition in our family (you know since we've done it twice now) to go all out for their first birthday party. It's a big milestone and besides that mommy can do whatever she chooses because at one the birthday boy doesn't care to have any input. Yay! I decided on a Little Guy in a Tie party theme, but was struggling with a color scheme until I found the shirt.

Thank you Target for providing the perfect shirt for the occasion (which everyone at the party thought I made) and thus deciding the color scheme for me. You may have also spotted the "perfect shirt" on my oldest in my DIY photo booth post.

What's a tie party without a tie party banner?

Cut out ties and letters with my silhouette and attached it all with glue dots.

And what's a tie party banner without a whole bunch of food to match. I thought it would be fun to make all of the food in the color scheme of green, white and black. Sounds weird, but there is a surprising amount of tasty food in those colors.

On the menu:

-Water with Lime

-Green Apple Slices

-Green onion & cream cheese appetizer

-Build your own salad:
